I saw Legends of Avantris play this game and was really excited to give it a whirl. In concept it seems really fun and simple. Unfortunately in practice, it was a complete bust; the game is a buggy, unoptimized mess with no troubleshooting available besides "go to our discord". I'm pretty sure that most of the trouble is in the game's VFX, which are far more intensive than necessary and quickly begin to grind the game to a halt. My computer is not weak by any means but was being lagged so hard that I couldn't even exit the game properly, which started when the game added fire effects and other such graphics to the gameplay. There is also no option in the game's settings to turn off any of these effects or reduce their intensity, only a Vsync option. I want to love it, but the game is literally unplayable in this state. Maybe it will work more effectively for some people than others, maybe it's a selective hardware brand problem or something, but there's absolutely no reason that a game of this concept should be this demanding on your equipment. Hopefully the devs will work towards optimizing the game in the future, and if so then I'll certainly be excited to give it another try, but for now it's a hard pass.
I want to preface this review with one important point: This is from the opinion of a seasoned author of 5 years. I'm probably not the demographic for this game. I was hoping that this game would be similar to a Jackbox party game. Simple as that. We all type answers, we choose, we move on. In a sense, yes, it is. However: there are so many elements to this that make it far more chaotic that it makes that hard to follow. From a gameplay perspective, you can have up to 5 other players working against your own idea. As fun and chaotic as this can be, it is absolutely frustrating when you take nearly all of your time to write a sentence or two that flows, makes sense to the previous one, and sounds REALLY FUN, all to have the crew (because there's a pirate theme, haha) choose someone's choice that isn't even in the same POV (1st, 2nd, 3rd), has spelling mistakes (that's fine, typos happen), and make no narrative sense. Yes, this is supposed to be fun. But it sure can be frustrating. Then there's all the stuff happening WHILE you're writing! The Pirate themed one can have your screen be shot with cannons, flooded with water, and blocks your vision, which kills your flow! Yes there are powerups and other abilities that can prevent this, or other things that can sabotage other players, but if you're coming to this game for a group effort writing a short story, you'll find that in the Custom Game section where you can turn those settings OFF! And the one thing that really turned me off was all the mobile game-esque items you can buy with coins. In a game like this, what does it matter? Sure cosmetics like your font in-game and other things, go the Overwatch route and not have it effect your advantage over other players. But that does not change that fact that you can still buy the currency. In a game like this, although free, why are they here? Admittedly, I haven't played it long enough to see if I can earn the coins at a steady rate to earn any of these things, but I'm willing to bet cosmetics won't be worth it. Overall, I came into this game with hopes of a fun writing game, but came out frustrated. If you're experienced with writing, you may get frustrated with the loud, overly colorful, distracting elements that make this game, well, A GAME! If you just wanna have fun? Yes! Go for it. I would not recommend this game. Not my cup of tea.
The SINGLE interesting aspect of the game--online matchmaking--is now gone. You can either gather other people interested in the game that you already know (unlikely ngl) or you can play against a generative AI, which is... Yikes.
I really enjoyed this the last time I played because I could join random groups and play with them. Now I either have to make a game and invite my friends or get a code from someone to join another game. How come I can't just join random games anymore?? Am I missing something?

Somehow every feature added to this makes it worse. What should have been a very simple interface for effectively a text adventure instead bloated into a 10GB mess full of disjoint minigames and mechanics. I've never uninstalled a game faster. Oh also when one player left the game partway through, the game instantly crashed for the rest of us in the same session.
When I try to play I have a window asking "are you sure?" continually answering does not make it go away. The multiple times i have tried to play my part of the story does not submit. I cannot do anything.

Generally I think this is a fun game, how could it not be for the low price of "free"? I certainly had a lot of fun playing it. However, there are some points I hope the developers read from this review: 1) The recent decision they took to focus this on play with friends is the correct one. I get the idea of wanting to accommodate solo players but not every game needs a solo mode. If they do want to re-visit solo mode in the future, my suggestion is to essentially make it completely different. 2) I think there's no problem with the new ideas about monetisation (i.e. new themes/packs/rules are paid for, basic are free) but I think there actually needs to be a couple more very basic packages. Horror is the game in the purest form almost. Do something like Crime and Fantasy totally bare bones for free. This will be enough to hook free players for multiple games. Then feel free to make the expansions super specific, sure you have generic horror, but you can always sell packages that have more specific direction (e.g. the Lovecraft pack with specific mechanics and prompts). 3) The singing "mini-game" was entirely pointless and we just all sat there in silence. For the other mini-games we had no idea what was going on. I think they need to be thought through better how they are "taught" to the players, give them a bit more time, maybe a practice round. You can then turn off practice rounds as an option. Assuming the devs continue to work on developing the game in a positive way, my review will stay positive. However, there is a risk they try to do more 'flashy' stuff which I think is fine, but it needs to have a rock solid basic foundation first, otherwise the risk is someone will see this and swoop in with a much more extensive base game and pip them to the post.
