I enjoyed the way this story started out. It was interesting (sorry no spoilers) and got its hooks into me. I followed it with growing interest and curiosity to see where it was leading. And then right in the middle of the building action, Plot Twist! You know one of those unavoidable, screw you over, lets torture your character by making them powerless and forcing them to do things / have things done to them against their will situations..... Oh and so sorry but im one of the LIs terribly sorry we had to meet this way BS lines..... yeah no. Then right in the middle of that just when it looks like you just might get out of this situation, tada another Plot Twist, and your somewhere else again (once again without a by your leave, or choice in the matter) having a bunch of new strange crap going on, with no explanations and stupid choices that have nothing to do with what you were doing before any of this lunacy started. Then You get rescued, only to have the people your originally involved with start growing snake heads. First your asked to hunt one of your own, then of course its your turn to get hunted! Again as MUCH as i want to give details so this review would make more sense, it would be spoilering and the censor gods would surely disappear it. But the icing on the cake comes after all that, when you suddenly once again find your self somewhere else, with a drop down list of Important Things you want to follow up on... Gone is any meaningful story line or immersion. Its Oh Okay well we need to tie this up and tie that up, or do you just want to skip to the final confrontation..... What a way to totally ruin a readers experience. I lost all interest in finishing it, and was only left with a burning desire to write this review.
This game has a tendency to handwave your actions away, for example you can kill Eleanor Cawardine any way you like, but would not let me kill her kid Max no matter how hard you try. If you do, then a magic portal made by the Well of Insight spirits you away every time. Hell, even at the end of the game when you can rewrite history you still can't kill the child. The only saving grace is that I made the entire world a hellscape, so maybe he will die due to the new world I created. I realize I am giving a thumbs down for not having the ability to kill a kid, but you should have never presented that option to me in the first place if I could do nothing with it.
Positives: -Plot was pretty decent. I did figure out a lot of the twists before they were revealed, but the journey to get to them was still enjoyable. -The main character is fairly interesting despite not having much of a proper backstory. I liked discovering things about them as they did. The other characters were alright but could have used some more development. -Certain choices seem to impact the plot somewhat so there’s replay value in it. -The amount of abilities/stats felt fair and most of the time I had the option of at least one skill I'd levelled. The characters/plot will also frequently comment on whether your current choices match up with your previous stats choices, which was cool. Negatives: -The romance feels like it doesn't have any buildup. You get to interact with the characters platonically but then it's like "So, wanna get together?" at a certain point. -Maybe it's because of the choices I made, but certain things were never explained, they just seem to happen and you have to accept that without question. This book was an interesting take on a spy/supernatural story. I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw this but I really ended up enjoying it. 8/10.
I liked MC's base wraith superpower, I think it was unique and cool. I don't think it counts as spoilers since you're introduced to this power at the very beginning of the game: you can walk through walls and other solid stuff (including people) like a ghost, and you are invisible to the human eyes which makes you the perfect spy. It's cool to see that MC wonders about the extents of this superpower, like can you somehow pass through earth and so on. There are a number of major choices (at least it looks like it) and different endings (I've explored 2 endings, at least). I felt like most of the choices I've made had some effect at later stages of the game which is good. I'm not entirely sure but it's possible that some superpowers are used more frequently than the others. Luckily, the powers that I've focused on were sufficient in most encounters (if you focus on a single power, you'll most likely fail a lot of encounters). In some occurrences, I've seen MC using two powers together which was cool (it happens automatically as part of the text). It was rare but I couldn't guess the stat-check behind some choices. Luckily, I'm using my own open-source Save Manager which allows me to undo my choice if it used a different stat-check than I thought. Overall, I wouldn't rate this game anything lower than 7.5/10.
I had fun, i am very happy i did not destroy the world lol i was scared of that happening as i did pretty well and did not want to restart yet again, but i felt really weak at the end there drained of all my powers. I think i did good all in all tho even if i failed to romance any characters and i missed some stuff. So i had fun but i did not like the skill system here, i constantly felt really weak the whole game. As much as i wanted to learn new skills i needed to focuse on two skills to avoid allot of bad things from happening and even then you get punished for being a nice guy making it even harder to not fail skill checks. I hope they do a sequal and that the skill checks are more forgiving in it so that you get to enjoy the powers you are supposed to have. All in all i would recommend this.
So, take Fant4stic, replace the mutants with ghost-like creatures, mix a little woke mind virus and a whole lot of unhinged left-wing fever dreams of Trump and MAGA... And here we are. At least it is otherwise competently written and edited. I haven't quite finished yet. So, at the three hour point, I don't know how long a complete play through is. But I can only take so much of this eye-rolling cringe at a sitting. My recommendation is like when you taste something so awful you just have to convince your friends to experience it for themselves. But hey, there is no accounting for taste. If you have a raging case of Trump Derangement Syndrome, you'll love this game.
A very solid CoG - better than most. I really only have two criticisms for the story: 1. The romance wasn't handled that well in my opinion. It's very abrupt, especially with the Sorcerer, and with the limited character exploration of the romance optinos it feels empty. 2. I didn't like the inclusion of the non-Wraith entities. Magicians, demons, etc. To me it makes the whole thing feel smaller. I get that the author is building a shared universe with MetaHuman Inc. (which is a good game), but... meh
First off, what a great picture on the game page. One of the best game covers I've seen for a CoG. So happy CJ Cregg went from press secretary to president! Bartlet would be proud. The game itself is a tad railroady. forget about just being a silent, scary wraith. You're a part of the goings on and you must commit to the big, tent-pole issues. Also this would have felt better if it was not set in the US, I can imagine how much more interesting/scary this could have been set in Singapore, or Columbia, or N. Korea. Teach me about not just the story but how somewhere other than the US would use these amazing spies. Minor things though. The story and powers, and cast are really fun. The choices are varied, it's a good length, and you do get to play the character you want. All amazing and enjoyable 8/10
This is where I would really like a "not sure" button. I've only played through the once but intend to use the special "save" system next time to avoid repeating the hard slog to get to the real choices - a lot of them don't seem to make much difference to the plot or my skillset. Its an interesting enough plot, but I felt it was padded out too much in places, simply to make the game longer. For the moment I don't have enough interest to do a second run through and make different choices. I did not find the MC or the other characters likeable enough to want to know more about them. 5/10 for now, but it may improve with different choices when I get around to playing again. Not good, but not bad either, and it lasts longer than a movie and its better than listening to rain on the roof.
