Don't be fooled by the simplistic look and feel of this dino-game, there are a lot of things going on - procedural, survival, resource gathering, pet raising, tribe management, endless runner feel (map size can be changed), base defending... perhaps a little too much going on? There were a few bugs, but I'm sure they'll get stomped out fairly quick - all in all, quite a fun experience that makes you want to try again and again as you get the hang of getting your tribe to throw rocks and fire at dinosaurs. https://youtu.be/zNpc0n5e0ZI
So this game has some technical flaws, it lags a little and sometimes your character just stops moving and results in you dying, which totally bums me out because I LOVE THE CONCEPT OF THIS GAME. The music is cool and the dinosaurs are oh so cute. Outside of me keep getting my alpha caveman killed because of these glitches, could never get out of the tutorial and it was frustrating. If this gets fixed would love to go back to this game and try it out, it was actually a great concept. And a very cute game. I will still say I recommend this game, but the bugs need to be fixed to make it more playable. But great fun this game is.

"Wood 'n Stones" is a 2D side scrolling survival/crafting game very similar to games like Kingdom or Caveman Craig (although this lacks the depth of either). You control a caveman with some NPC followers, collect wood and survive against Cretaceious period dinosaurs that didn't co-exist with cavemen, so historically accuracy is the second thing that went right out of the window here. The first thing to go out of the window was "quality". Itch has one job, and it's not a hard job, but they failed again... to keep amateur stuff in their weird hugbox where everyone claps and says "Good job!!!" at every bit of amateur drivel (which nobody actually plays) and away from gamers. Unfortunately this has leaked out onto Steam platforms and now gamers have to put up with yet another bit of poorly made amateur shovelware. The game features really lacklustre 2D visuals (does the developer not know 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid-1990s?). Gamers don't spend thousands of dollars on gaming rigs and the latest 3D graphics cards to play 2D games. Even mobile phones and game consoles can do 3D graphics now. There's no excuse. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. This game is fairly dated at 6 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $4 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 5 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? What's the verdict? I think you should give this one a miss. Although it's free, your time and storage are valuable resources, and the market is filled with superior options.
