I selected that I already knew some Japanese because I can read kana and am roughly N5/N4 level. Many of the UI elements are in Japanese, but I don't know what those words mean. The game will ask you for words that have not been introduced. The controls are clunky, including switching between keyboards. Often, it wasn't clear what I was supposed to do. Even though I was answering most of the questions correctly, I was defeated by monsters roughly 1 hour into the game. Sorry, I am not going to struggle through this. I have better ways to study.
I took some Japanese lessons from a native lady at one point in my life, and after trying the beginning of this game I can tell you it doesn't always pronounce things correctly. The game itself is a cute concept, but the movement, menu, and interactions can also be a bit clanky and it did crash on me after about 40 minutes. So as much as I love the concept of making learning like this more fun and pretty, this just isn't there.
this game has potential (i think) but i cant play it right off the bat because the japanese keyboard you are presented with makes no sense and takes so much time just to find the letters (characters) the way they are laid out... why not just use the english QWERTY keyboard and map the romaji to the hiragana/katakana like a normal apple keyboard does? or even use the japanese keyboard... bummer.
would not recommend this game. it crashes and sets back all your progress. also somethings in the game are just incorrect example: the word business is set as katakana word but it's a hiragana word. the audio is sometimes robotic the game is buggy, some words you try to click on to see the meaning and nothing will happen. it's not developed properly, the pacing is painfully slow. also if you are brand new to Japanese this game would be to difficult for you because some words are not even explained just said and you have to spell them out guessing. the pronunciation is also off and frankly it needs more of a native touch. i see potential in the game but it's not worth the money. i paid 25 for it on a sale and I'm requesting a refund. in it's current state with it crashing its not playable anyways. good luck to the developer but this isn't worth my time or my money as it is.
Plays great on the Steam Deck, which makes it super cozy to just grind out some vocab before bed. I came into this knowing zero Japanese, and the dedicated Kana module at the start did a pretty good job easing me in. My only minor gripe is that the default combat multiplier can make some of the review fights drag on a bit too long. It took me some time before noticing you can bring it down. Still, getting to play mini-games like crosswords to break up the grammar lessons keeps it from feeling like actual schoolwork. Definitely worth the price if you want a chill, low-pressure way to start learning. Note: I am not a complete beginner, I have been learning Japanese on my own for a couple of month
Honestly bought this because it looked like old-school Dragon Quest and I’m an absolute sucker this kind of game. I wasn’t really expecting much from the language mechanics (I already know a bit of Japanese), but the spaced repetition battles actually force you to remember the vocabulary without being annoying. I completely skipped the kana intro since I already know hiragana, which was a really nice quality-of-life option to have. The story is a bit cliché, but the NPCs are surprisingly charming. It’s definitely a solid time sink that makes you feel productive while gaming.
The game is helping me with my japanese a lot, more than dualinguo, but it can be quite hard. I like that you can decide whether you want to do the battles or not, sometimes I want, sometimes I don't because I just want to play a few minutes for my daily streak. I like the characters and the story is cute. I wish there were more listening comprehension bits though, but there are a few. There are other things that can be improved but there are regular updates, so the game is getting better and better. I think it is a good game to learn japaense. They say if you finish the game, you can play a real RPG in japanese and understand. I think it is true, but you need to finish the game in Kanji mode too, because you need to know Kanji characters to play a real game. I am looking forward to finish so I can play pokemon in japense, that's my goal. And maybe after that Octopath traveler.
Вроде прикольное, но я не хочу учить японский... Но для тех кто желает его изучать выглядит вполне неплохо... Только переизбыток ИИ рисунков прям вымораживает, но геймплею оно не мешает.
Game's a weird mix of trivial and then far far too advanced. Spoken voices and explanations sometimes don't match the sentence. The voice input hasn't worked even once and the virtual keyboards are all terrible. Graphics are nice, atmosphere is okay, but I can't recommend this for learning.
