Very Hard

Hey! If you enjoy my reviews, follow my curator page here! I am an independent Curator providing reviews and insights to the games that need the spotlight! Thank you! :)
For all of us that comb our first grey hairs and love racing games, there was a golden age that we remember fondly and that’s when SNK published racing games for their console, the Neo Geo. Games like Over Top (the spiritual successor of the legendary Thrash Rally) and Neo Drift Out came as a breeze of fresh air on a console that was particularly known for its fighting games. Also, one of the arcade kings of the era was World Rally, from Zigurat. These games incorporated a very characteristic isometric view and were known for their excitement, full of adrenaline infused speed that made each race exciting and unforgettable. Even though there was an attempt to bring the genre back (with games like WRC Powerslide), the genre has been missing that real spiritual successor of those games. It puts a big smile on my face to tell you that Woden GP has arrived to take a seat on that empty throne. ViJuDa is the driving force (no pun intended) behind Woden GP who developed and published the game, even working as a composer for the soundtrack; which its upbeat rhythms and hard rock riffs are a one way ticket to the 90s to feel the nostalgia with every corner. The sound department works, nothing outstanding to highlight with the exception of the talented Melissa Medina providing her energetic voice as the female announcer that hypes the beginning of each race and wishes us better luck next time when we fail. Oh, and we will fail a lot! The game is tough as nails! The three different difficulty settings can make it from an approachable experience for newcomers of the genre to a real tests of skills for the veterans, demanding to race the tracks to perfection in order to reach all the checkpoints. The game offers a variety of tracks, 15 closed circuits that we can enjoy against the clock (with the implementation of leaderboards coming soon!) or against the IA in Free Race. There is also a Career Mode and 5 long circuits from point a to B to maximize the Rally experience in the Arcade Mode. These circuits are really the coolest aspect of the game since it takes you through day and night, rain and snow and it’s really challenging and engaging. In the Career Mode we are introduced as the new pilot for a Rally Team with different categories and challenges that will allow us to unlock more than 15 cars, easily recognizable as rally classics. The graphics are really pretty, the sprites are colorful and well designed and they really shine when you look at everything in motion. There are also a collection of filters that give you more choices to define the most suitable aesthetic for you. Of course, this means nothing if the actual racing doesn’t feel good and luckily for all of us, the handling of the cars is just a pleasure to experience. From drifting and taking a corner at max speed, to overtaking a rival on the last seconds of a race, the arcade experience is here and it never felt this good. I played the game with an Xbox One Controller and a keyboard and both experiences were awesome, but I really recommend you to enjoy the experience with a controller for the good old times! I think is worth mentioning that this is the first title of this Spanish Developer which is truly surprising. As a reflection of passion and dedication, this game belongs in your collection. ViJuDa must feel proud about his accomplishment here, because this is not only a tribute to a forgotten era, it is a revival. Playing Woden GP feels as good, or even better, as playing the old classics of the genre. This is not simply nostalgia; this is an excellent game!
¿Te gustan los arcades clásicos de carrera estilo Over Top, Neo Drift Out, World Rally Championship?
With a few Woden racing games in my library already and a new one out this week, it seemed like as good a time as any to get familiar with them. This first one apparently was taken off the store fairly quickly, released in August 2020 and delisted about 3 years later. Presumably as the developer's skills improved and they released more games, they just didn't want this decent but amateurish game around anymore on their account. But that's just a guess. There's a lot to like here, it's reminiscent of classic top-down arcade racers like Kaneko's Great 1000 Miles Rally and SNK's Over Top, but of course without the looks or tight control of those professional arcade games. The graphics are a bit odd here, there's like a blur/smudginess over the image that I can't seem to make go away no matter what setting I choose. But it's also quite possible the max res. here is 720p and it's just going to look like that on a 4K screen. Controller support (a must for any racing game) is solid, every button is about where you expect it to be including trigger gas and brake. There's 14 individual races, each one of which seems to award you a new car, and 3 cup races containing 4 races each. The game is fast and controls well with a noticeable difference in the cars, but there's one major flaw: The trees (and sometimes buildings) over hang the track frequently, completely obscuring your vision of your car and sending you into all sorts of chaos as you try and figure out how to get back on the track. Or even what direction you're facing. An absolute "what were they thinking?!" classic. But outside of that one major misstep this was a pretty nice first effort, and I'm excited to get to the rest of the Woden racers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJoK80Hf6YA
If you like top-down racing games, please follow our curator page.
A recommendation with some reservation. Pros: - Pleasant 90's PlayStation1-like presentation - Great arcady music - Great announcer voice actress (she needs more lines) - The drifting sounds like Ridge Racer :D (overall the sound effects are pretty good) - The cars look bright and colorful, also much like Ridge Racer or Auto Modelista (the look of the cars makes this game attractive at first glance) - The circuits are varied and challenging (I also like that some of them are pretty long) - A campaign with some narration - 2 player splitcreen - Native controller support - Achievable achievements - A lot of potential In between: - I'm a little unsure about the handling. It is definitely not bad, but I would say, it is at least somewhat unintuitive. Even on asphalt (there is muddy ground, too) the car is always more or less drifting just by hitting the directional button with no need to brake. But then (while drifting) you have to brake to "tame" the drift. If you drift too much, the car will lose too much speed. I found this handling very appropriate for the muddy rally courses. But I would say, the general appeal and atmosphere of the game and of course the focus on asphalt evoke the desire for some tighter controls. Cons and suggestions: - The track environment is probably the biggest visual and general weak point of the game. Let's go into detail here: Unfortunately one can easily notice that almost everything in the track environment is more or less out of proportion, not on scale. Even on the same track you can find some huge differences in the size of trees. You will also encounter monstrous sunflowers or parked trucks/vans, which are far too big, and so on. I think, even for an arcade game this is a little too much. While the racing cars are really beautiful, the track environment appears deformed, blocky and unreal. Another negative effect of the course environment is that it sometimes conceals the player's view, so you can easily lose track of your car. Comparable classics like Neo Drift Out never do this. I want to encourage the developer to do some rework here. - The game obviously does not save any highscores or best times. That's a no go for an arcade racer :D Please add this essential feature. A pure time trial mode and online leaderboards also would be great. - Although the minimap is very helpful, I would wish, the game has a clearer indication of upcoming corners. There is much inconsistancy in this regard: sometimes there are directional arrows on the track, sometimes not. Also the yellow displays on the trackside are not that helpful – in contrary to the other track objects they are far too small. I think, some arcady blinking HUD-like indicators would work best (as long as they do not distract or block the view). Some "Easy left – Easy right" from Melissa Medina would of course also be helpful :D Overall I enjoyed my almost 7 hours with Woden GP, but to be a real long runner it still needs some tweaks and improvements. This 90's style isometric arcade racer has a lot of potential!
fantastic challenging game. recommend it. gets addicting. reminds me also on NeoGeo games like Neo Drift out. i have started playing campaign with "Normal" level setting and finished first six events with little practice. but with begin of 7th event i needed to reduce to "easy" level :) "easy" level in this game seems to be the sweet spot for me, it is still challenging and not really easy, but fair enough to finally progress on campaign with little practice.
If you loved the rally games from the Neo Geo Era and if you mix this with RC de GO from PS1, you definitely need to add this game to your Library!! The game has great potential and I would love to see new cars and championships to be added in future updates. The handling of the cars and difficulty if you are kind of a beginner in this type of games, I recommend to start on Easy or Very Easy difficulty that the developer added to get to know better the tracks and the IA of the CPU more and it will take of course more than a couple of tries to get the hang out of it, but after winning a couple of races you soon start to definitely notice the improvements on the laps time and enjoy more the thrilling of the races and rally's in Arcade/Career Mode. Sometimes I found the game challenging and always testing your skills at the limit (Like for example the latest checkpoint in the route A (when you are running out of time in the Snow Area) and this is a good thing because it always keeps you pump and honing your skills to always get the better results. luckily the game do not fall in the boring/loop circle we all racing gamers remember back in the year 1999 when we played Gran Turismo 2 when you finally get the Suzuki Escudo Pikes peak and get like +99 laps ahead of all the rivals in the endurance/race events.... Yamauchi you mad? lol I like the challenges added on this game and I am an old school racing gamer and loved the difficulty setting placed on Woden GP. For me I loved this game and I RECOMMEND IT and like the first reviewer pointed out on the game that for the price it is a bargain and as a plus the game I found it very fun, it is a win/win scenario to myself.
