If you like top-down racing games, please follow our curator page.
At its core Total Arcade Racing is an old-school fixed-screen (one complete track on one single screen) top-down racer, which does two very important things right, where similar games often fail: 1. The handling is overall good, fun and challenging, not too simple. 2. The game can deal with collisions, has a good collision detection. Both means that the pure driving, alone or with other cars on track, is pretty enjoyable! Another strong part of the game is the sound department. It has very pleasant and cute sound effects - many indie games forget about them. Also the music is good. Happy retro game style tunes, not the hard rock from the current trailer. A little misplaced seems the announcer voice (saying "3, 2, 1, Go!" at the start of each race). It sounds too serious and masculine in contrast to the rest of the game. EDIT 19/11/2020: The trailer music is now music from the actual game. The misplaced announcer voice is now replaced by starting lights. Great! The visuals of the game are very basic and simple, but this has also some style and elegance (like flat-shaded polygons in 3D games can have). Nonetheless I would wish for some more variety regarding upcoming tracks. At the moment all tracks are greenish, set in a green environment with more or less the same track objects. EDIT 19/11/2020: The game now has its first track in a bluish water environment. Neat! Gameplaywise the (currently) five courses are well designed and varied. Until now I mostly played the core single player mode, which is time attack. Here you try to get a three stars rating on every track. Each star represents a certain (hidden) best time you have to beat. Meanwhile you also compete with the online leaderboards, which is always a good thing to have. What might be questionable: all top times on all tracks are dominated by the same car - the fastest. Maybe there should be also car specific leaderboards, preventing that the other cars get simply obsolete and for players, who prefer to compete in a slower segment. (To be continued...)
A cute and enjoyable game, made by an incredibly friendly and passionate developer. Significantly more difficult (and frustrating) than it looks. Haven't come across any weird bugs or glitches so far, other than the fact that I really suck at driving - though I don't think the game's to blame for that, it's a pretty accurate representation. Overall, for the price at hand, definitely no regrets!
Here's what you do:
You race the clock or other cars from a top-down view of the entire track which fits on a single screen. There is support for up to eight players locally. Game modes include time trial, championships, survival, demolition derby, an endless course to see how far you can get without crashing, air hockey, and a package delivery competition.
What I like:
There are plenty of game modes and support for up to eight players to play locally. You can choose from a selection of cars with their own stats (and choose what color). A nitro boost regenerates over time, so you can get one or two boosts in per lap, depending on the track, timing, and your choice on where to use it. I really like the handling and the physics in general as they feel right to me.
What I don't like:
Not a lot of single player content. I ran through all the championships and time trials in 90 minutes. The cars are labeled as class C or class A. The class A cars are way faster than the class C cars. There may be situations where C cars could be advantageous, maybe in tracks with a lot of tight turns, but I found the A cars to be better overall. I could play this more and get a better feel for all the cars, but I ran through the content already so I felt I could post my review. The creator has stated that more content is planned for the game, so hopefully that adds to the overall experience.
Conclusion:
This game will accommodate those looking for a top down racing game to play locally with a group of friends. It has only about an hour's worth of single player content unless you want to go for time trial leaderboards. I have had fun with what is there, and more content should be on the way, but if you feel like you should wait and see then do so. This game feels like a remake of Super Sprint, and I absolutely love it All the races in the game are good, though there are some shortcuts, they don't break the game And also, OST in this game is amazing I really recommend checking this game out, it's a lot of fun, especially with friends
Yes, it's a re-born classics from ZX Spectrum! It has 8 players hotseat mode. And it IS arcade! Few issues and suggestion though: - sometimes AI car gets stuck an the track no.3 - can it be brought back on track (or destroyed) after 10 secs off track? - what about car damage in a regular race? AFAIR in the ZX - car performance also degraded if car got damage - and yes - DNF due to damage in a regular race was a pity :) and fun - racing tableu with positions and lap times just like on real track , please! - let players set their names - what about mono-class championships? - for some reason my joystick failed to work in game - and thanks one more time for bringing back to life my childhood memories!
Pretty dope. But make it easier to get stars. Being in the global top ten should not still earn you only 1/3 stars on a track
Best 5$ purchase I've made and this can be played with 8 people which is so great
I love this racing game! The top-down design is clean, elegant, and the animations are beautiful. It's super fun to drive and it provides a great way to relax after a hectic day of school or work. This would also make a great party game as it provides multiple keyboard and controller inputs so it's easy to have a quick multiplayer race on your large tv. The UI provides many different race types and car customizations. It can be played online (where records are saved) or offline which is a unique feature. The developer actually implements new tracks and features based on customer feedback so I expect it to evolve and get even better. Total Arcade Racing is definitely worth the price!
Hyvin tehty minipelien kokoelma! Parasta että voi pelata 8 ohjaimella. 8/10
