I can clearly see the majesty inspirations, but this is like a Majesty light, light, light. I have played it for 40 minutes on the biggest map, and already feel like I have seen everything there is to see. Very few upgrades, very few buildings, very few anything to be honest. It's very charming and that is sadly where I feel the only positive is.
I was excited for this after playing the demo, but the full game doesn't feel like it added much at all. I feel like I already got everything out of the game after less than 30 minutes of play.
https://youtu.be/iEiqV3iwloE An old school Majesty clone, the game uses simple graphics, building, and heroes. When I first played it did bring me back to watching my heroes ignore enemies unless I bought them off, and I did get some of that old nostalgia, esp when my wizard died, and then the new one also died! Overall its fairly cheap, and you get some nostalgia, and a few maps with different enemies on it, its plays fairly similar regardless. The art and music are good, and overall I think you'll enjoy the game as long as your dont expect a super classic for 3$ If you still on the fence I have some gameplay footage above. Enjoy and Happy Hunting!
I was drawn in by the concept and the great color palette. I played through the game once, and felt like I had no idea what was going on, but then gradually learned how things worked, which was really nice. I won my first playthrough pretty quickly and was actually disappointed that it was over so soon. Then I tried again on the bigger maps with higher difficulty, and IMO, that's when the game gets really good. Well worth the modest asking price!
Within a Dead City is the tiny Majesty-like I never knew I needed. While auto-battlers have come more into vogue in recent years, the combination of these ideas with a lightweight strategy/4x game is something that I personally haven't seen. Its a lovely little package and executes well on providing a quick hit of 'kingdom management' you can play easily over a lunch break if you so desire. For those that haven't played Majesty, the crux of the game is you hire a group of heroes (that you do not directly control, but can influence via bounties and spells) in order to explore the land and eradicate the local fauna (aka monsters). Within a Dead City puts its own spin on this idea placing you in charge of a guild tasked with exploring a long abandoned city. Combine this premise with the haunting color scheme, charming pixel art visuals, and minimalist soundtrack and you have yourself a bonafide Victory in my book.
A fun RTS-light that has a charming art style and fun premise. A bit of a learning curve since many of the mechanics aren't explained, but enough is explained so you at least understand the basics. Well worth the cost.
- QUICK REVIEW - Its bare bones but with good potential Definitely inspired on majesty but not nearly close yet I can see this evolving nicely after some love and work. Needs more content, progression, randomness and other aspects to keep it alive. Its worth 3 dollars to help the developer to put more love into it.
A minimalist coffee-break Majesty. Recruit your heroes to go die in some dank pit, build up your city, get heroes to spend money and maybe not die, use money to bribe heroes into actually protecting the city.
