I've always been an avid fan of Tonguc Bodur and his walking sims even after he started removing users from his friends list after which he added a cryptic message on his profile as an explanation. His walking sims always seemed interesting in terms of graphics, narrative and special mention goes to the soundtrack. Now, the "phile" series later on proved to be much shorter and he also released a horror game. I appreciated some of these experiments where it was clear that he moved from the CryEngine to Unreal. Now, with Lucid Cycle I expected him returning to the good-old narrative formula but instead we get a series of short levels that are supposed to be dreams. After 3 or 4 we are back in our apartment and by interacting with the lamp (?) we get to respond and name the dream which stood out the most. This voice (that sounds like an A.I.) then explains the meaning of the chosen dream. I found Lucid Cycle boring and uninteresting. There were a lot of returning elements (shining deer and the music at the beginning). It is as if Tonguc is giving us a summary of his works in the form of this game which means moving forward we can expect something longer, more interesting and ultimately: better. I really do hope so.
Lucid Cycle
A 2021 mystery game. In Lucid Cycle, sleep teleports you into enigmatic or bizarre dreams where everything is obvious yet unexpected. A little puzzle-solving, a little acrobatics, and a few things to find. (Developer) That's pretty much the gist of it. But the execution is worth a few words and necessary to get a sense of what to expect. Designed as a running simulator, but interspersed with many things you have to do to reach your destination. The system is simple. You have to figure out what the task is and how to complete it. You have to find your destination and figure out how to reach it. You also have to figure out what you can and can't do in each location. You have the option to collect things, shoot at them, use them, or interact with them. Or simply to reach your goal by walking, jumping, driving, and even falling. You should avoid dying in the dream, or more precisely, perishing. As you can see, it's quite simple. I think you'll need at least 2 hours for this. Prepare for content consisting of nightmares. Thanks to the good save system, even challenging sections are solvable, as you can experiment or quickly correct mistakes. It's like Groundhog Day, but only seemingly so. Suitable for anyone who has ever wanted to know what advanced madness means. Definitely meant in a positive sense. I rate it quite positively due to the interesting gameplay.
Lucid Cycle

Alright. Lucid Cycle is done and dusted. This was a very unique approach from Tonguc as far as how the game is presented while still offering the familiarity of one of his walking simulators, which are some of the best out there. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3240624531 Most notably, the story is both layered and very nuanced. I think the ending tells you what the final message is, but it evolves on the way there. To me, it goes as follows: First, dreams are often very existential and surreal by virtue of their very nature and can be difficult to understand. Second, dreams can have a decipherable meaning and are a reflection of what you're going through in life or in your head. Third, regardless of what your dreams are saying and whether or not your interpretation is correct, they can inspire a person to create. Fourth, sometimes you can put all your energy into your creativity and lose sight of other things that are important in life. And fifth, take a break from creative pursuits every so often and find a balance between that, real life and relationships that allows you to live your life to its fullest. That's what I get from this game's story anyway. The sort of GLADOS inspired pseudo antagonist was also a nice touch. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3240624353 Presentation-wide, Lucid Cycle is a series of dream vignettes broken up by sequences where you wake up, answer a question regarding your dreams, work on a painting, and then go back to sleep. The dreams themselves take many forms. Most are variations on classic walking sim, but some feature other gameplay mechanics. Lite shooter dreams, puzzle dreams, platforming dreams. There is some nice variation there. There is also a joke about shooters in there that I thought was funny. The visuals are also quite varied, with each dream conveying something unique, but also staying on track with the overarching story. The audio does a great job of also translating the moments and add to the experience. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3240624385 I think you can reasonably expect to spend between an hour and a half and two hours in this game. Nothing is particularly complex, but you will have to learn the rules for each puzzle which I expect will lead to at least two or three deaths for a couple of them, and movement speed is dictated by the game. I lollygagged a little bit for screenshots, but I also didn't get stuck anywhere in the game, and my playtime was 1.8 hours. Which was perfect IMO. I think this is a very interesting and unique way to tell a story within the confines of a mostly walking simulator, provides an opportunity for the player to decide what it means to them individually in many regards, looks and sounds great, and I enjoyed my time with Lucid Cycle. Give it a look. It's worth playing. Do you have strange dreams? Bet they aren't as strange as the ones you'll experience in Lucid Cycle. Each wave left me amused, confused, and curious to see what is next. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. Recommended for those of you who like walking sims, but do try and play this sober. Lucid Cycle is enough of a trip all by itself.
Lucid Cycle is a bunch of Unreal Marketplace assets shoved in a blender and arranged into a kind of first person adventure/walking sim. If the screenshots and visuals look pretty good in this game, it's because the "developer" had nothing to do with them, which also explains why they look so mismatched, some detailed, some lazy/low poly, etc. So we've established you can take the Unreal Engine, and throw your credit card at the Unreal Marketplace (it's a fun game matching all the store assets here, from the deep sea diver to the leeches) and come up with what looks like an actual video game. The thing about games is while it's vital for a game to be well presented and take advantage of the PC's considerable gaming capability, it also needs to be a fun game, and this is just a lazy, directionless walking sim with a few light puzzles where you guess how to progress to the next set of stock assets. This is really an attempt to turn a bunch of stock assets into something profitable by slapping them together hard enough and calling it "art". It's not like walking sims can't be art, take a look at Dear Elise for an example... but that's the thing, the best games are about storytelling. Which doesn't take place here. The objective of this wasn't to make an actual game for gamers, it's a profit orienatated experience. If this was free, it might even almost be worth recommending, more as a demo for Unreal Engine than a game, but asking $4 USD for this is just not going to work. It's not really a game. It's a "I bought a bunch of Unreal assets from the marketplace, so give me money!" exercise.
Follow "First Person Exploration and Puzzle Games" for more games like this!
This developer is known for making short, low-effort walking simulators. I have not enjoyed any of their previous games. This game has a notably different style from their previous games, but I still did not enjoy it. The game consists of a series of short, weird tech demos. Every few demos, you wake up in an apartment and a robot interprets one of your dreams. Then you go back to sleep and watch more tech demos. Here are the first few tech demos: • You walk around a forest with large colorful mushroom trees • You walk into a house with some giant leeches. You shoot a white ball at them and they turn into cake • You platform jump from one floating train to the next • You're on a boat and the camera flips upside-down • You walk across the ocean and see a city under the water • You walk across the ice and touch some statues • A bunch of sailors are walking around. You shoot white balls at them and they ragdoll and get thrown into the air and so on. Some may find it "artistic" but I found it lazy and pretentious. Get this if you enjoy artsy things, but if you want something with actual story or gameplay, look elsewhere.
overall: -------- Feels like 1st-time-wannabe-developer's 1st test projects in UE/Unity bundled into 1 "game". It's extra-MEH. I know this developer made multiple games (I own most of them), but this sure feels like test games prototypes compilation. I played some walking simulator games and some trippy games and I liked some of them. So it's not like I can't appreciate good abstract game art. This is just mediocre at best. It really feels like someone trying new game engine features learned from YT tutorials for 1st time and trying to bundle them into game on Steam for some quick bucks. None of the gameplay elements are polished and visually it's not that great. Also there's some woman in weird poses present in most dream sequences for some reason (i'm sure it has some "deep" meaning). technical: ---------- Visually sometimes nice, sometimes just bad. Looks better on screenshots than in-game (all maxed out). Performance is also really bad in some scenes (in flat especially). Mouse is moving too fast even on lowest in-game sensitivity and also there's some weird stuttering present in this game. Most models/textures/effects feel like ripped straight from asset store on sale. gameplay: -------------- There are these "dream" sequences and these "waking up in flat, talking to lamp with "witty/funny" commentary about those dreams, painting a part of picture, going to sleep again" sequences. That's the game loop. It's just boring. Gameplay is either non-existent (walking simulator parts) or boring (shooting segments and collect-x-items) or infuriating (NPC can't touch you or you can't look at some objects or you trying to avoid lighthouse's lights etc -- which all lead to level restart if failed). verdict: -------- Don't waste your time unless you like to smell your own farts and trying to act like pseudo-intellectual-artist.
Lucid Cycle is a short game about dreams obviously and funnily enough it's also a great game to fall asleep. Developer Tonguç Bodur comes up with a new game every 2 months or so and honestly some of those games are pretty interesting while others feel rushed. Lucid Cycle belongs to the latter. All games he has developed consists of bought assets, which is not a big issue as long as the game is interesting. There certainly are some beautiful and interesting parts in the game but using the Unreal Engine it's almost impossible to make a game like this look bad. Lucid Cycle just feels like a student project or someone playing around in in UE to see what weird stuff he can make the engine do. This game is like the virtual equivalent of a painting in a museum with a white canvas and 3 red stripes but because someone says it's art it should be seen as art and you should not criticize. Seeing all the positive reviews here, there have to be a lot of people here that are exactly like that "You just do not understand" because you lack intelligence. You can safely skip this one.
