Try this game. You can right now, because most people don't realize that the "trial version" gives you essentially the same version as a full purchase up until level 5 (Edit: since writing this review the devs have upped the free trial to level 11, which lets you unlock even more characters and ships). After that point, matchmaking will be shut off, but by then you'll have enough matches under your belt to know if this game is worth it or not. For me this game just scratches a very specific itch that not many other games provide. Essentially, it's a PvPvE extraction game, yet unlike many games in the genre it can also be played fully PvE if you wish. Want crazy large scale PvP fleet battles over specific high value objectives? This game has that. Want a more chill PvE experience where you and some friends scavenge derelict ships while also occasionally being attacked by NPC raiders? This has that too. Best of both worlds in my experience, especially for those like me who like to dabble in both modes depending on your mood. Not to mention that the art and characters in this game are truly interesting, and really make you feel like you are a pirate/scavenger in space. That's not to say that the game is perfect, as the complaints about low population and imbalanced MMR matchmaking are fair. However, the core game is solid, and the recent patch shows that the devs are listing to what prospective players are asking for. Really, if you are on the fence about this game, just give the trial version a whirl, especially if you can do so with a group of friends. And if you don't have that, hit me up.
