Remember those old school games like Galaga and space invaders? Did you know about Raiden or Raiden X? Well just upgrade the graphics and add some cool mechanics and you have Wavecade. In this updated game of survival you must use your ship, which can be edited to your liking, to bust open blocks and get powerups that devastate the field. There is a catch though. You control the speed! Move up the screen to make the speed of the game, and soundtrack, move faster. Move down the screen to make the speed go slower even to a crawling pace. As you move up and down the screen your points will go up or down too. Faster means more points and slower means less. You decide what you wanna do. Are you an accurate player who wants to be very precise and shot each block? Or do you wanna dodge and weave the waves to get through as fast as possible? Earn enough points/kills and youll be rewarded powerups and specials. There are some pretty unique skills and powerups. My go to skill is the beam that destroys everything. It's great for some areas which have random events occur or even if youre surrounded by blocks of varying nature. You have a wide variety of randomly given powerups from tri-shot, to freezing the screen, or even tracking shots and a gatling gun. These keep things unique and at times fast paced depending on your speed and ship. Your ship is another great aspect of custom content. You can select a type of ship, the color of it and what kind of exhaust it spits out. That's not all though, you can even change the color of the exhaust too! These are free to mix and match as you see fit to get a more personal feel. A lot about this game seems very personal. Wavecade is an interesting game with randomized levels, great customization and the idea that you control the game. With a new twist on classic games and updated 3D models this is sure to entertain you on lunch or at night when youre just relaxing and looking to have fun. The powerups are unique and random which gives you a sense of danger, the ship customization feels great and wholesome and tailored to you and the levels are challenging and fast paced.

I really want to like this game but the lack of visual clarity is a dealbreaker for me. it's very hard to avoid hazards in time when there are a lot of blocks/projectiles on screen, and while the core mechanic of moving down to slow down time is clearly intended to help with avoiding hazards for some bizarre reason they've chosen to not show the entire gameplay area at once (like every other shmup I've played) and and also used a background that gives no indication where you are within the arena until you're close to the sides. At least half the deaths I experienced in the handful of runs I did were from attempting to manoeuvre around something only to hit a wall and any time I didn't have the ricochet powerup I had no clue how far up I was. Combined with a REALLY clunky menu made for a lackluster experience, which is a shame because I really enjoyed my time with the PAX demo.

Fun game, I love the time manipulation. It's a very unique feature, I love how the soundtrack follows the speed you're on and you can feel the chaos. Nice to see the care that went into developing this!

Works perfectly on the Deck, there's even an official controller layout! Controlling the speed by going up and down is a big part of the fun! Seems easy as first, can get tricky when you lose a life and all your powerups! 8/10 Disclaimer: I got a copy of this game for review by the developer and it doesn't change what I think: I genuinely had fun playing on my Deck. Game time played shown on Steam does not reflect reality as I was off-grid most of the time.
