I like some of the ideas they put into the game. Maybe it isn't the first game where you can target specific parts of your enemies to cut them off, but having arms and heads be used as a currency was a welcome idea. Having to destroy parts of armor was also fun. The way you plan your path on a map that's pretty much a copy of Slay the Spire also works well for a rogue-lite. But where this game suffers is the combat. Your character feels really slow and unresponsive, enemies move like they're in jello and everything just feels clunky. For a game that's based around combat this isn't acceptable. The skill tree is very simplistic without many meaningful upgrades. Chests I found so far contained only 5% boosts to different stats making them really boring. EDIT: THE GAME HAS BEEN ABANDONED, DO NOT BUY [strike]It's still in early access, so all of that can be fixed, but right now I can't recommend it, even at it's current price. I wiil keep my eye on it though, because if certain aspects of it are fixed/rebalanced it could become a very fun game.[/strike]
I really wanted to like this game. I adore dark souls and similar games, but being unable to deal with the laughably slow enemies and their telegraphed attacks, soley because the controls are janky and unresponsive was a very frustrating experience. I wanted to see more of what the game had to offer, but after 45minutes I could not stomach the core gameplay anymore. There were some really great mechanics, namely the body armour positions and limb dismemberment/decapitations. However, with the core gameplay being in such a poor state it really taints the whole experience. There is potential for a great game with a lot more work, however this is the full release version of the game and thus I cannot recommend it

Currently, the game lacks A LOT in terms of polish, and definitely feels like a rushed release that would have benefited tons off being in Early Access. Clock Drive Games opted for a full release, and by doing so have pretty much doomed this game after much sweat and toll that spanned over 5 years of development of Warlander (yes, THIS is all they have developed in 5 years, with 30 people on their team. Friggin' Ninja Theory developed Bleeding Edge in as much time, and did most of the job on that game prior to being acquired by Microsoft, with 20 or so people!) With all that said, I cannot recommend this game. It just feels like they sat up one day and said "That's it guys, we need to release this game and turn some profit, no time nor resources to develop it further." As an Early access title, I'd wholeheartedly recommended it, though...
The controls are really janky at the moment and the character controls like a truck. It just feels unresponsive and slow, and hitting things is frustrating because of how ponderous it all is. I was really looking forward to this game, and the concept is still solid. I really hope they can tighten it up, but at the moment it feels impossible to recommend, sadly.
If I was reviewing Warlander in 2008, I would be championing it as a pioneering feat in the gaming industry. I would be praising its cutting edge graphics, gameplay loop, and genius design. It is not 2008 however, and I am praising none of these things. Warlander is perhaps the only game I have ever played where I was immediately not enjoying myself. The controls are odd, unresponsive, and very dull. You often have to wait for animations to finish before realising that you should have attacked 10 seconds ago, and now have died. I'm usually not one to care for graphics, a good game is a good game, doesn't really matter what it looks like: but Warlander looks like Kingdoms of Amalur had a child with Spyro the Dragon, and it was not an easy birth. The core gameplay loop is very promising, scaling a randomly generated tower with varying battles and buffs to engage you. The execution is... less than ideal. Every "level" is little more than a single room arena (often with reused elements from the last 10 you just slogged through) and every enemy behaves in basically the same, monotonous way. And please, don't get me started on the voice acting. I could use many adjectives to describe the performances in this game, but none of them would be kind ones. Pick it up if it happens to be on sale for less than $5 at some point. Otherwise, I would caution you to steer well clear.
EDIT: with the 1.1 update in now performance decent, also the halberd boss seems to be fixed. I feel like this game released a little to early with a couple more months this could have been so much better, its not ready for a full release and I would have been fine with the issues if it wasn't for the full release, should have either given more time or be released in early access. That said I really like it although it feels like after some time it will be to repetitive. Also its not without its flaws, (IRRELEVANT) I had one gamebreaking bug with one of the blue bosses which caused me to restart the fight(IRRELEVANT) . Same sort of thing happened when an enemy was out of bounds and still alive and I couldn't reach him. Controlls are a little odd and feel unresponsive at times, also the running seems to be bugged since when i have enough stamina the majority of the time it goes in and out of sprint instantly. However I do recommend it for 13,50€ you will get some good fun out of this, its not a bad game. for now a 6,5/10 from me. Pro's -Art style -Gameplay -Chalenging -Lightsabers!!! Con's -To many bugs for a full released game -Controls are odd an unresponsive at times -Repetitive -Finishing blows seems like they’ve been implemented at the last second, the animations and execution are plain up bad. (IRRELEVANT)-Runs not very good (IRRELEVANT)
Horrible release, devs should be a shamed of yourselves. Are you trying to ruin your own company? Nothing but lock ups, freezing, screen messages stay on your screen and don't fade. This game is trash and not worth .15 cents.
This should be a pass for a few reasons. 1) It's badly optimized. I run VR games at max but had to turn this down to low, though I could hardly tell a difference. 2) The story is bad and just throws you in mid stream, but not in a good way. Luckily it lets you skip cutscenes. But... 3) The voices are like listening to cows get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the ass. You will hear them from time to time no matter how fast you skip cutscenes. The minute to minute gameplay is okay. It's like a clunkier version of Dark Souls set in an arena style environment. This is in now way an open style of gameplay. The price makes it more palatable, but the hard truth is this game feels like an early beta, not a finished product.
