An ancient, somewhat janky RTS from 1998, but you can see that from the trailer. Buy this game if you don't mind: 1) Immediately fixing the game speed and resolution in the options menu to something comfortable. 2) Reading the manual. This comes from a time when manual reading is just a normal thing. 3) Units that have only the vaguest sense of "pathfinding". 4) Left-click for everything, as right click to move hadn't been standardized yet. 5) The whole game in general being "the style at the time". So how is the game, once you're past all that? It's got a lot of interesting ideas. Your main resources come from plants called pods and spores. You can plant several if you want, but even if you only plant one they will spread into adjacent tiles as long as there's room in the cropland. Building a refinery near the pods will allow you to accumulate power. Other buildings need to be built within a refinery's radius, though it can be extended with relay towers. Psi towers are the standard "supply depot" type population extension buildings. All of the factions have different gene technologies and a few different advanced buildings. The game's main gimmick is that you can salvage "genes" from slain enemies including the genes of other factions. Once a Gene Collector is built, your workers can gather genes from any enemy corpse that hasn't completely disintegrated. These take the form of various appendages that usually act as weapons. You can then create new units with these appendages in the Gene Lab. You can queue up any amount of a particular kind of unit from a Gene Lab, but it's better to have multiple Gene Labs continually producing units at the same time. More advanced tech requires more advanced buildings, and so on. It was a good game by the standards of it's time, and is still decent despite the jank. It has a pretty smooth learning curve for a 90s RTS. I think it's worth playing for it's interesting ideas as long as you're willing to overlook it's lack of modern conveniences. The graphics are fine-for-the-time and the sound effects are a bit meh, but the music is great.
It's just as bad as it was in 1998. Perfect!
A classic RTS in every sense of the word - one of the countless floods of Command & Conquer and Warcraft 2 clones with a fantastical world, weird monsters, brain-dead AI and horrendous pathfinding, but also a few unique things like technology theft and a resource system that makes only your buildings cost anything. It's bad. I love it.
I'm perhaps a little biased but I played this game as a child and have been intermittently looking for a way to play it again for almost a decade .... I would say: - It's an old game so you won't be blown away by the graphics the gameplay is complex enough to enjoy in my view. - Music is great! - Would recommend, especially for £5!
A great game that scratches that old school RTS itch. I only played the demo when it came out ages ago and finally got the chance to play it as an adult! The game does not fill you in on what's happening in the story, but that's why you have the manual! Yes, it's that old school and you need to read the manual to understand the story, game mechanics and you get an overview of all the buildings, units and upgrades. The game does have an in-game browser of the buildings, upgrades and units, if you want to take a closer look. As for pros: * Great graphics, love that alien/fleshy/dystopian look * Music is pretty funky and diverse. Even a bit of DNB in there (Whoop for old school tech music) * A lot of unit combinations * Fast paced battles * Creative missions challenges And the cons: * Unit path finding is terrible, especially in long distance. Need patience for this! It helps to guide them in short distances. * AI on both your units and the enemies is pretty dumb. You have to really pay attention to your commands, but at the same time you can take advantage of the enemy units. * Unfair advantages against you in some of the missions. You have to restart quite a bit and hope you get lucky enough to survive brutal waves of enemy attacks until you build your own. Overall score for this, a nice 6/10. Slightly above average and it was a nice and short nostalgic experience. Thank you, whoever made this possible for modern PCs!
El primer juego de estrategia que tuve , antes de SC o AOE, para mi el mejor juego de todos. Siempre me gustaron los Sen-Soth
My first strategy game ever. I like this game but there were no introduction scene and cut scenes for each level campaign after wining. I hope they will fix this. Very interesting game.
actually really cool and in depth. Janky but has tools to combat it once you go into the manual and learn the hotkeys for them. Surprisingly in depth designs for stuff
The game is from 1998. If you bother to understand how the resource system works (plant crops, use generator to get the energy to maintain your building, psy control = pop and the gene system(harvest genes from killed enemy units for new tech)), the unit system (being able to craft units to your liking) you get to play one amazing unpolished diamond of a game. The soundtrack is amazing (I like it, and it is not your usual generic hero music).
Amava esse jogo lá em meados de 1900 e bolinha, tive que comprar de tao nostálgico que é, um sonho seria uma versão dele nos gráficos e jogabilidade que temos hoje em dia!
