Reviews
Terrible, just no
I bought this as a joke and ironically the joke is the game itself. Let me tell you why:
Songs
This is M2U's passion project game - the dude is very well known rhythm game composer, which explains why most of the songs in this game are his songs. Because of it, while the songs are fitting for a rhythm game, M2U's limited style of music has caused the whole library to sound the same, you play 1 song of M2U and you feel like you already listened to 3/4 of the whole library (the remaining 1/4 is Memme). Memme songs are okay, nothing amazing to write home about.
Gameplay
Let's move on to the charts, it is just....... very peculiar , the charting in this game feels incredibly amateur, the speed and flow is all over the place. It feels as if the charter is trying too hard to make charts that are above his playing level and not have a good understanding the flow of the difficulty. It either feels way too fast for the song in a split second, like the charts are having a seizure. The judgement ranges from HYPER BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, GREAT, GOOD, MISS. My gripe for this timing window is that it is way too strict, the timing window for HYPER BRILLIANT is way too tight while the BRILLIANT is way too loose, creating terrible accuracy makes reaching SSS (or all HYPER BRILLIANT) feels impossible especially the game also has bad syncing problem.
Modes
The game is in early access right now (by the time I'm writing this and possibly forever in early access) so I can't complain too much about the lack of game modes. The game at the moment has 2 modes: Radio and Survival Mode. Radio is basically your bread and butter singleplayer mode, where you play the game by yourself. The game only has 2 difficulties: Normal and Hard (yup that's it only 2 diff) ranging from 1 to 14, you have your standard speed notes tab, random tab and fade in/fade out (the usual stuff). It feels barebone but it is serviceable. Survival mode is something that the real elephant in the room. I think this mode is very stupid in terms of idea and execution, the idea is you and many other players get together a lobby and the game will select a random song with random diff and you and other players try to survive by going through a certain score threshold as long as you can while trying to achieve the best score as possible, sounds good on paper until the devs decided to add effector like highspeed and soflan in the middle of the song for no reason, isn't the scoring high enough, seems unnecessary making the execution of the mode feels very messy. Not to mention this game is very dead so all the players I was matched with are all bots and they will always score the same songs every time, 2nd will always be over 635k which is basically 50% of the score song (you literally can't lose). It still says season 1 beta till this day.
Minor good points
Game has 4k, 5k and 6k....I guess that's a minor plus (this game has so many Ls that this is considered a W) The game is no longer grindy as many old reviews suggested because the game has basically unlocked all the Memme songs. I have no problem booting up the game although the game did get freeze 1 time. The menu UI and animation look pretty good.
Back to criticism
Because the game has unlocked everything, the game has no progression, nothing to unlock or incentive to continue especially with the incredible lack of content. Bad mistranslations (probably AI). Game has not gotten any updates for the past 17 months and the last update is just 1 song. This is the worst part of the game.....most of the jacket covers (probably all of them but I have no evidence) use AI generated art.
TLDR
VVAV.ONE is an abandonware game that is envisioned by M2U. Apparently this game's promo videos have been deleted from his social media platforms so that is something to think twice. The game has potential but that potential has been thrown away by their own creators trying to seek for easy W and success but to no avail. My advice: get better games such as DJMAX RESPECT V, EZ2ON REBOOT R and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice or even god forbid osu!mania because VVAV.ONE has set the bar so low that probably going outside and touching grass is better than this.
So yeah, this keyboard rhythm game has much less features than a EZ2ON or a DJMax, but it clearly doesn't want to compete on this level, nor they can I think. The goal is to offer another little keyboard rhythm game with keysounded (which is not that common), with it's own charts, songlist, experience, scoring system and so on. Of course it's missings basic stuff or features like favorites; scroll speed is related to tempo and you can't change that; no leaderboard; no fanfare or special ending text for a Full Combo; early and late are barely noticeable; no detailed informations and they're not saved to see what the previous high score was made of (by the way, you can know if you Full Combo'd a song only if you got it with a S rank -950 000 of score-, which gives you automatically a SS rank, but if you have lower rank and Full Combo, no way to know that if coming back to it later, there's only your normal rank); way less board options and customizations; no real animated video clips; etc... But most of them doesn't harm the experience at all, and you can take it for what it is: a nice new cool keyboard sounded rhythm game with M2Us music. If you love his stuff, I think it could be a must. I like the default and only board skin for now, left gauge for song length, right gauge for health. 5K and 6K have nice charts, although 5K have two buttons possibles for central lanes, but doesn't offers middle trills like DJMax's 5B does. I don't know for the 4K charts because I didn't tried this mode as I really am not a 4K player. Be aware of one thing though, for now, almost all songs exclusively are in sextuplets swing / shuffle. There's real triplets and sextuplets everywhere (to make it simple, it's when you tap the beat to the tempo, and you can subdivide those beats into respectively three or six equal "sub-beats" so to speak, and that the notes you hear fit in this structure, and the shuffle / swing is when the note is place on respectively the sub-beats 1 and 3 for the triplets, and on sub-beats 1 3 4 and 6 for sextuplets). So if you're uncomfortable with those, it might be a good game to train with, but if you simply hate those, you might as well just skip this game. Anyway, I'm curious to see how the game will change during the course of it's Early Access, it has already a nice selection of songs, good charts, and overall good graphical and sound feedbacks with a pleasing experience, and a nice menu and interface (which is clearly not a common standard for every keyboard rhythm games you can find out there on Steam).
Early Access Review: Seriously, if this game has only single player mode with no extra mechanics and targeting casual players, it would've been better. More specifically, survival battle royale elimination is not ideal for rhythm games. The music variety is also really lacking and they aren't appeal to newcomers at all. The unlockable songs are locked behind grinding , which by the way is extremely tedious with no variety between each song. To be honest, more songs from more artists wouldn't entirely fix it.
