I've been getting into NetHack for a while now, but the original version's bare-bones visuals and cumbersome use of keyboard commands makes even the simplest of play sessions take a long time and feel more like work than play. Vulture goes a long way toward fixing that complaint. I feel more engaged with the game when playing this version thanks to it having actual graphics and sound, and the gameplay feels less like work and more like play thanks to the ability to use the mouse and contextual menus for so many actions. It's not perfect, and you'll almost certainly still need to consult the wiki a lot, but so far this is the most accessible way I've found to experience NetHack.
It's one of the best ways to play the best game of all time. The graphics, audio, and quality of life features are all well worth the price—that said, NetHack is of course free to play standalone or with other open source programs; however, if you aren't used to roguelikes or MUDs or other games played in a terminal, I would actually recommend buying Vulture before trying to compile NetHack yourself—reason being, the graphical interface and point-and-click controls vastly improve NetHack's learning curve, making shortcut memorization a matter of convenience rather than one of necessity. I'm 22 now, and Vulture's Eye is how my dad introduced me to 3.4.3 back when I was only 5 or 6. I've been hooked on NetHack since. I'd also like to use this review to let people know that the old Android port of NetHack is still maintained on Github, despite the Play Store release being broken. You can find it by googling "gurrhack". Like Vulture, I consider Gurrhack to have been an instrumental part of my childhood and of the development of my NetHack addiction. Finally, Vulture's Steam release also comes with Vulture for Slash'EM and Vulture for UnNetHack (the single most influential NetHack derivative and a strong contender for the second, respectively). I wouldn't recommend trying either out until you've ascended a few characters in NetHack and are really looking for the extra chaos and change of pace, but Vulture's support for the two does increase Vulture's already astronomical value.

Vulture is based on NetHack a free open-source roguelike that is still being updated actively from nethack.org. Vulture has custom art, sound design, and UI. If you're used to classic NetHack like me, it might be a challenge playing at an angle. There are other free "modern adaptations" to NetHack also aimed at beginners. GnollHack has animations, new equipment slots, and tons of new monsters. Pathos-NetHack is also free but is basically a completely different game with similar locations and items. Both are on mobile. Or play vanilla NetHack It's amazing. 1000+ hours and I still play avidly (there are players with 25% win rates - you can always get better). Why should you play NetHack in general? - Endless replayability - 30+ years of active development from passionate devs to make one of the best RPG sandboxes ever - 13 roles with unique quests and playstyles (try valkyrie first if you're new) - Open skill ceiling, there's always more to learn - If you like roguelikes this one is OG and continues to be one of the best VULTURE FEEDBACK: - "Shift" counts as a directional input if you press it after being prompted where to zap a wand or dig with a pickaxe which cancels the action (your wand glows and fades wasting a charge). - You can't drop a specific number of items, but you can stash/unstash custom amount - There's no turn counter by default making invoking and prayer more difficult - The attributes and experience and status box is kind of small (probably can be customized?) - An "in-game" wiki would be very useful to new players
OG roguelike game with some fancier graphics than the traditional ASCII or even tile-based. If you enjoy games such as ROGUE, IVAN, ADOM, and even more modern ones such as Tales of Maj'eyel, you'll definitely love this! It's not my personal favorite in the Trad Roguelike genre (that goes to IVAN and Maj'eyel) but it's absolutely worth a play for any fans of this genre.

Unfortunately, this old game is completely outdated. Cons: -I was forced to play the game in a small window. Although there is a fullscreen option in the game options menu, but I can't select it because the left side of menu is covered. -For the same reason above, I can't change the volume of music. It's so noisy. -The font size of menu is too small. To make matters worse, these white texts are very difficult to read on the light brown backgrounds.
I'm recommending this only to people who NEED graphics.... If you want the true rogue experience, Hengband is still around and free. Only downside to Hengband is that it's purely keyboard and there are A LOT of hotkeys.
Unplayable
One of the better graphical NetHack clients and still updated (albeit, slowly). Worth a buy if you want graphics for your terminal game.
