Alright, so this isn’t for everyone let’s get that out of the way. Vulture is basically NetHack with a facelift, and when I say facelift, I mean someone slapped a 3D coat of paint on a game from the 80s and said “good enough.” But honestly? It works. Once you get past the jank, there’s a weird charm to it. The visuals actually help make sense of what’s happening (something vanilla NetHack definitely struggles with), and the sound design gives the world a little more life. You still get your fair share of confusing deaths and RNG nonsense, but that’s part of the NetHack experience one minute you’re on top of the world, the next you’re dead because you ate the wrong thing or kicked the wrong door. The UI can be clunky, and it’s not exactly beginner friendly, but for anyone who’s wanted to play NetHack without needing to memorize every ASCII symbol like you’re studying hieroglyphics, this is a decent way to do it. It’s rough, old school, and borderline masochistic at times, but that’s also why it’s great. When you finally make progress, it feels earned.
I love Nethack and I remember hearing about Vulture when I started playing 20+ years ago. I loved the idea of a 3D isometric view and tile set for the game. I never could get it to work, but now with I can thanks to this version on Steam....and it is horrible. Not Nethack mind you, that is great, but this game uses an isometric view rotated at a 45 degree angle. This makes controlling your character with the keyboard feel weird because the cardinal directions move you at a diagonal, but you can use the mouse to move, so that's not to big a game breaker. The game had promised ease of use with mouse controls, but not all of the commands seem to be accessible from the mouse, so you still have to use the keyboard for some of the more obscure commands. Again, nothing game breaking. What destroys this game is there is no way to rotate the map. Go and play any isometric 3D RPG or strategy game, the one thing all the good ones have in common is you can rotate the map. This will allow you to see everything. In this game you can not rotate the map, meaning things can get hidden behind walls. Things you would normally have a direct line of sight to in this game will not be visible. I have been killed by monsters that were hidden by scenery as well as had a hard time finding stairs due to the game hiding them. In a permideath tough as nails roguelike, this is unforgivable. Download Nethack for free or one of its many variants designed to work with mouse only or touch controls. Pathos and Gnollhack are two I recommend, but avoid this graphical "enhancement".
Old school roguelike that honestly ***** nowadays. Play Legend of Grimrock or something much better instead of this abomination.
Nethack is the oldest, hardest, and most valuable game I've ever played. You can think of it like a DnD session with the computer being your DM, while you are the lone party member. Your objective is always the same, but the means in which you get there, as well as the various obstacles stopping you, vary dramatically across different playthroughs. Please note that what you are paying for is a third-party mod for Nethack that applies various UI and QoL changes to the game. You can download the original Nethack for free from their website, or you can play online on your browser, also for free. Purchasing this product provides a ready-to-play instance of Nethack with all of its add-ons prepared to launch at the click of the play button.
The game, unfortunately, is broken. You may only find this out 20 hours into a run when you’re in Moloch’s Sanctum and your intrinsic Warning causes a sprite to load in that crashes the game. Other than not being able to complete the game it’s great, but I cannot recommend you to learn every aspect of Nethack in this isometric format to only not be able to ever actually complete it. I’ve resorted to having to re-learn Nethack via the original ASCII format to be able to hopefully beat it one day.
Loving every minute of it. Great throwback to AD&D - recommended to all my ancient gamer friends. Spiffy graphics is a bonus.
Eat a kobold. Kick a box. Die from falling off your pony.
The idea of introducing a graphical interface was intriguing but I encountered the same game breaking bug on every playthrough and the devs are non responsive (i.e. it will never be fixed) so I can't recommended this game. Gnollhack is a better product if you want to give a facelift to Nethack.
Fun, and utterly compulsive.
