Has the potential to create beautiful maps in the future, however lacks some features at present that I would consider essential to creating realistic environments. There are no options for blending floor textures, leaving you with a blocky tiled look that needs to be covered with foliage/vegetation. While the vegetation looks lovely, there is inconsistency in that some trees are animated, some are not. Also, when scaling items, they do not scale in line with the grid, meaning that some items end up being out of line with others. I also found it difficult to line doors up with door frames. This aside, the lighting does look very nice, nicer than any other map making software I've come across, however being able to control the brightness/temperature of individual lights would make the experience much better.
It's really good, and gives you more than enough stuff with the base program (and ALL of the DLC's as well) to justify the price. The only way they can keep creating content is to make sure they can keep paying their employees (why does nobody understand this!?), would you rather have a subscription model!?. Seriously, the people B****ing about the price would be happy if this company just put out the main program and never added anything else, but not me, I'm glad I can keep getting upgrades for a reasonable price (which NOBODY IS FORCING YOU TO BUY!). Also, to all the haters of this software, you know that 2 of the DLC's they have put out are FREE right!? they wouldn't have been able to do this without paying their employees! If you're looking for free stuff go get freeware, otherwise if you're willing to pay for great quality this just might be right for you. Please keep going strong Virtual Battlemap! I own all of your DLC's for this program (including the new "Lost Temple") and I'm looking forward to seeing what else you do in the future.
I really love this tool! i immediately spent hours learning it. Its a rough learning curve for rotating objects and you will almost certainly immediately realize you do not have nearly enough assets and will start to but all the DLC haha. A few criticisms i have is that a lot of the dungeon stone textures have a border on them that you cant get rid of so you are forced into having an unnatural raised border pattern in your floors if you want to use that texture. Also while there are a TON of placeables... there doesnt seem to be any treasure ones? like... there are chests that are closed, chests that are open and empty, and a few gems that look ok-ish. but no gold at all... no mountain of coin or anything for a dragon hoard or dead kings treasury and lastly i am slightly frustrated with placeables and furniture not being fully skinned... meaning i cant have a turned over bar etc unless its at the right angle or against a wall to hid the invisible bottom side... but overall a great program i really am enjoying
It's a shame this content is dead, because it's superior to a TON of alternatives. Soon the likes of Talespire will overcome it, but for now, for building moving and realistic overhead dungeon maps swiftly, it's amazing.
its great. try it
I use this as a visual guide for my in-person games I run, and the actual battlemaps I use online, like on roll20. its really easy to figure out how to use, and even easier to apply to multiple situations. I wish the DLC was cheaper, but its still great
I really like this program, Usually i spend HOURS making maps with photoshop and this program is so much faster and looks cooler! i have a Ryzen 5 1600, 16gb ddr4 msi gtx 1060 6gb and after about 15 minutes the program constantly crashes and i have to restart dispite what ever setting i use. Unfortunitly because of this i have requested a refund! if it wasnt for that then i would still be using this! if it wasnt for the crashing issues i would give this 5 stars!
I'm a big fan of this program. It offers an insane amount of options for anyone looking to create amazing looking locations for their players to explore and their montsers to inhabit. You get what you pay for with this program, and I recommend all the DLC's. I only hope they keep up with adding to it!
In my opinion I would recommend this program, but in small doses due to the price tag. Over a space of a number of months I have grabbed a few packs to cover what I need. To buy it all at once would defo be way too much. Pros = create awesome looking maps with sfx and lighting. You can utilise different angles for a nice dynamic instead of the usual bland birds eye view. Although this does make the grid shrink in areas depending on the angle. So it will be up to the DM to manage this. Cons = Within the packs and base program, there are no doors you can place. Which is very random. You have open doorways but no doors. So if you want an area to be locked off or just closed you can't. The camera controls are very awkward to use. WASD is apparently up, down, left, right but its actually zoom in, out and strafe left and right. Space and C is up and down when really THAT's forward and backward. So the actual controls to move around without changing the camera angle is Space, C, A, D. The final bad point I'd point out is the monster pack sucks so bad. It's bad there are no characters with the base game but as everything is 3d and detailed it makes sense. There is a lot of work put into this. However the monster pack gives you just a handful of very random monsters. Defo not worth the price. Needs to have many more monsters included. So if you are wanting all the common monsters such as Orcs, Goblins, Dwarves, Humans, Elves, Undead etc.....Prepare to be disappointed. The only Humans it has is a female rogue and a male druid looking guy. The only undead is a bland looking zombie. It's not the end of the world there are no characters or monsters to use but it would add to the dynamics of the maps, especially at different angles.
