Reviews
Virago World does not resemble the content advertised on Steam or on the developer’s Instagram. I had been following the game’s visuals and promotional posts for a long time, and none of what is shown there is actually present in the game. The gameplay is extremely repetitive and unengaging, but I still decided to give it a chance because, as a woman, I deeply appreciate and support artistic projects that address themes related to women’s experiences — which is exactly what Virago World claims to explore. However, after several hours of playing, I reached a point where it felt like the game was bugged: there were no missions, no guidance, and no indication of what to do next. Confused, I contacted the developer directly through Instagram to ask if I had missed something or if I was doing something wrong. He told me that the game is unfinished, that he plans to continue developing it over the next months or even years, and that what I experienced was “the ending for now.” There is no mention anywhere in the game that it is episodic or incomplete. There are no credits, no message, nothing that indicates that you’ve reached the end. It was impossible for any player to know this without directly asking the developer. I feel misled, especially because the game forces you to play long enough to surpass Steam’s automatic refund window. The use of meaningful themes related to women’s issues — themes I genuinely care about — makes this even more disappointing. The game is marketed as a complete product, but it is not. Combined with the poor communication and unprofessional attitude from the developer, I cannot recommend this game. You are essentially paying for a game that does not exist in the form it is advertised.
Nov 25, 2025: I refunded this after reviewing and do not plan to re-purchase until a good sale. HOWEVER, the dev is introducing updates and an episodic story mode that may affect your experience. If you're interested, please read the update logs.
Virago World claims to be a cozy-creepy "life sim" about a girl who sells plants by day and sics her pet bear on creeps at night, but falls short on all points. This was a tricky review to write; I have nothing but respect for the dev, yet am actually kinda mad about this game.
Gameplay + Details
Gameplay. Fetch and deliver quests, plus a maddening UI. Controls. Keyboard/Mouse only. Settings/Options. Audio sliders only. ⚠️ Achievements. Bugged; don't pop when they should.
What Worked For Me
✅ Art Style. I dig the black-and-white look, and quite enjoy watching the lantern-eyed armless player character (Willow) waddle around the map with her cartoon grizzly bear. I especially like that the only colors are Willow's pink ribbon and various plants. ✅ Protective Bear. Not only is your pet bear a pet bear that scares off stalkers, but it's also more beholden to its appetite than to you. If his belly isn't full of fish, he'll ditch you. I loved this.
What Didn't Work For Me
🟥 Quests. There's always one quest available (until the unfinished ending, per a more patient reviewer) and it always requires you to deliver plants, which always requires you to purchase seeds/plants using money earned at your shop. That's the entire gameplay loop. 🟥 Gardening at Home. Pots can only be placed in predetermined spaces inside your home (using the world's most obnoxious placement system), seeds are annoying to select and plant (and must first be purchased), watering a plant until it sprouts takes forever, and that's it. There's no crunch, nuance, or dopamine hit; gardening is just fighting your inventory system and holding a button. 🟥 Gardening at Work. When you click "Work," infinitely patient customers come in to request certain plants. Through a series of unintuitive clicks, you place a pot on the counter, grab a (free!) seed from a menu, and water it forever, and water it again, and then again until the plant fully grows. Then you try to drag the plant to the cash register to sell it. It's… not fun. 🟥 "Stalkers." The bad guys come out at night, but won't bother you if you're busy (like fishing unsupervised in the park), and also move so slowly that you don't need a bear to dodge them. If one catches you, you reset to your last save point. 🟥 Day/Night Cycle. The clock moves at warpspeed, but only impacts stalkers. You're never tired, and your store gets the same traffic regardless of whether you open at 8AM or 3AM.
Final Thoughts + Recommendation
Sunday Akor, a young Nigerian dev, has been trying to draw attention to women's issues since at least 2022. Willow's struggle with creepers and kidnappers has previously been told in a dream-like short story and a series of platformers (in release order: Virago, Virago: Herstory, Virago Trepidation, and Virago: Reality New) that all feel and look experimental. Virago World also feels experimental, yet poorly researched and hollow; there's no message, nothing to emotionally relate to, and nothing fun to hook fans of management games and life sims. The entire loop boils down to fetch-and-deliver quests while constantly fighting the UI, and neither the bear nor stalkers add to the experience. With that $15 USD price tag and misleading Steam page, it feels like the sort of "cozy game" bait-and-switch typically targeted at women. All this to say: I'm incredibly disappointed. I wish the absolute best for this dev and will keep an eye on their future projects, but cannot recommend Virago World.
I've been into the Virago series since mid-August 2025, and it's a fantastic game!
A Recent review after the new update. I have been playing this game for over 40 minutes now and i can tell the developer actually listens to reviews which makes me really happy. In just a week i can already see many changes. The game was definitely really boring at first launch with the progression being really slow. So far i have been playing the new "Story Mode" and it is the best update i have ever seen! They finally made all the post i see on my TikTok or Instagram reels playable and i just love how the creator said they will be releasing at least three episodes every week! which means they haven't given up on the project. Another part they plan on adding is the new your story feature which i already can't wait to try out. For me Virago World game is a 10/10 after the new update. I can't wait to see more from the developer
I've been waiting for this game for a while now, and I'm very underwhelmed. The instructions are confusing, nothing is intuitive, and i just can't recommend it in this stage of its development. I'm hopeful for it's future, but it just isn't worth buying yet in my opinion.
Good game so far. only issue is the bugged achievements which at least the developer said they are currently working on. It seems like they listened to all the reviews and are actually working on improving the game which I really like. Also the new story mode is amazing! I genuinely think its the best part of the game. it being episodic and playable is just perfect I give this game right now a 9/10 which is saying something because I rarely ever give a game this much high rating. waiting for more episodes
The new update cooked so much! This game is an easy recommend from me! My girlfriend got me hooked on this and I can’t wait for more episodes
I’ve been following Sunday Akor and the Virago series for a long time, so getting Virago World felt special. It’s one thing to watch the videos and shorts, but actually playing it hits completely differently. The atmosphere is calm and cozy at first, and then suddenly you remember this is still Willow’s story and it carries that familiar emotional weight. The world feels alive. The small details like the flowers, the rooms, the cats, the people in town, all make it feel personal in a way most indie games don’t. What surprised me the most is how much the game reflects the tone of the content I’ve been watching for months. It feels like stepping into the world I’ve only seen on screen. The art, the little sound moments, even the story pacing all feel true to what made the Virago series so memorable in the first place. It is clear this wasn’t made by a big team but by someone who understands storytelling and atmosphere better than most studios. It is emotional in a quiet way. You actually care about Willow and the people around her. There are moments that caught me off guard with how real they felt. If you’ve been watching the creator’s content, this game feels like the full version of everything you’ve been waiting for. If you haven’t, it still stands as one of the most unique indie experiences I’ve played in a long time. I’m glad I bought it.
Actually a good game. Having fun so far. also enjoying the story mode just wish it was like a daily thing instead of weekly either ways its a sad story poor Willow.
