Note: A copy of the game was gifted to me by a wonderful friend. ^^ Viking Heroes 5 is a time management game developed and published by Alawar Casual. It is the latest game in the Viking Heroes series. As usual, we follow our Viking heroes - Everand, Brunnhilde, Helga, and Boromere - as they prepare for Yule, which we all know is Christmas. However, there's a hiccup in their plans. It turns out that Odin has lost the Rune of Balance. Now, why is this important? Without the rune, Odin won't be able to have visions and the nine worlds will be in disorder. Thus, it's up to the Viking siblings to save the day. Along the way, they may pick up some special presents to give to the gods, too. That's the basic story synopsis, so I'll stop here to avoid spoilers. XD As for the gameplay, you can choose from among the usual difficulty levels: relaxed, normal, or expert. (For review purposes, I chose to play on normal mode.) There are a total of 50 story levels, along with 5 mahjong solitaire levels. Also, there are 10 additional levels that are in a bonus story, which is unlocked after completing the main story. In the story levels, you have a number of tasks to complete, which can range from constructing buildings for the Viking heroes in order for them to complete their specific tasks to removing certain obstacles. You'll need to construct buildings that produce resources, like food, wood, etc. Power-ups, such as time freeze, are made available as you progress through levels. The collectible owls have returned although they're only available in some levels. In addition, the heroes can even collect special presents for the Viking gods. As this is a collector's edition, there's a detailed guide as well as wallpapers and such. Finally, there are plenty of Steam achievements, and they count towards a user's global total. Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my thoughts. Time management games are one of my favorite game genres, and I especially enjoy the ones published by Alawar. Suffice it to say that I wanted to get around to playing this latest Viking Heroes game as soon as I could. XD To start things off, I enjoyed the story as always. I like how it takes place around Christmas. (It seems that the latest TMs published by Alawar have centered around particular holidays.) The story's atmosphere gives off a warm feeling, as it centers around the heroes working together as a family while helping the gods. Also, I enjoyed how the story has a time traveling aspect. I suppose this concept has been used a lot in stories, movies, etc., although this is its first introduction in the Viking Heroes series. Anyway, I like how the heroes end up anywhere from the dinosaur era to the more modern age. Of course, every story and problem has its resolution in the main story, and the bonus story serves as a sweet side story that rewards the heroes. For the gameplay, I didn't run into any technical and game crashing issues. All of the achievements unlocked for me without any problems. However, I should note that although most of the achievements can be obtained in one playthrough, there were a few that required a bit of grinding. I had to replay a few levels, especially to earn that gardener achievement. :o In addition, having played on normal mode, there was one bonus level that was nearly impossible to earn 3 stars, based on the guide and the starting materials and such that are given. Even though I feel that most of the levels are well balanced in terms of difficulty, a couple of them could use a bit of tweaking to make them slightly easier and more doable. In regards to the art, it's in the same cartoony style as in the previous games in the series. This style works, with the bright, vibrant colors popping out on screen, so I'm glad that the developers kept it. Regarding the music, the tracks are the same as in the previous games. Although they fit well with the whole Viking theme, I do wish that there had been one or two new tracks to change things up a bit. Overall, would I recommend Viking Heroes 5? If you enjoy time management games and especially like the ones by Alawar, then I think this is worth it. Despite the grinding and minor difficulty level issues that I had, I ended up enjoying it. For the asking price, I think it's worth it, but you can always wait to get it on sale, and it's in a few Steam bundles. ^^
For more detailed, high quality reviews like this, please follow The Introverted Gamer, prioritizing heart and soul always. ^^
FrohLoki, der nächste Teil ist da! :-) Und er ist wie immer gut! Grafik, Sound, Story, Leveldesign, alles ist von bester Qualität. Dazu schöne 100% Errungenschaften und lange Spieldauer, was will man mehr? Fazit: sei kein Thor! Kaufen! :-)
I would recommend this game for the Steam Winter Sale. Ironically, however, I bought it for the Steam Summer Sale, so none of the Xmas stuff resonated with me. The story didn't make any sense as it was just a random collection of levels, but then it made sense because the bad guy is a giant raven and everything was an illusion. Anyway, the game does what it advertises: it is a time management puzzle starring Everand, Boromere, Brunnhilde and Helga, so it gets one pinky finger up. Even so, I enjoyed other entries in the series more, as I found this one a bit grindy and incoherent, and the element-puzzles were a bit random. Also, I recommend casual mode as some levels aren't well balanced for speed, though all are doable eventually.
time management game, just as good as all the others
Man kommt also trotzdem zum nächsten.
