About

When life becomes a monotonous cycle, it's not hard to grasp how someone could be pushed to the brink of violence, all in the name of feeling free. It becomes even more understandable if that person never even began to live, before being shoved out of the nest. With no gentle way out, the only chance to start anew is to snap chains and splatter organs.
Putting it that way, it was only a matter of time until Demian gave in. We can't prevent a tragedy, but we can cause their descent.

Take control of Demian Zhao, a 22 year old living on the razor-thin edge between murder and mental break. After moving to Kingsfield Beach in hopes of finding a place to call home, all of their motivation to get out and live a better life has been sapped away. Now, they survive paycheck-to-paycheck, working their miserable job at the Restful Night Motel as a cleaner.
As they become host to an ancient flower god, though, Demian will soon learn that not all is hopeless with their life; they just need to set themself free. If you let them, their humanity will slip away in exchange for their freedom.
The story revolves around Demian's own dreams, fears, desires, and bloodthirsty hatred. Every choice a player can make is a thought running through their mind at that exact moment; no action is out of character.
Will you help them pluck the worms of cruelty from their brain, or indulge in their most violent fantasies?
Taking place in the fictional city of Kingsfield Beach, Nevada, Veins Like Tapeworms will present a chilling world for readers to immerse themselves in. Kingsfield is a concrete paradise, where dreams die under gaudy casinos and neon signs. Poor little Demian’s already been swallowed whole by the city, but that doesn’t mean they can’t crawl out of its festering underbelly. All they need is a little push.
Even with a slow-burn narrative told in 8 chapters and 100,000 words, readers will be begging for more by the time the story is over.
The story of Veins Like Tapeworms is heavily dependent on choices made through a playthrough. The way Demian perceives the words and actions of those around them are influenced by the thoughts a player has allowed into their head - a heartwarming conversation in one path can become a harrowing monologue of bloodlust in another.
With 2 early endings and 4 full endings, the way Veins Like Tapeworms comes to a close is sure to shock or unnerve a player. Can you save Demian from their own violent desires, or will you let them finally give in to the rage that's boiled in their heart for years?

Curious about the damage left in your wake? 5/6 endings come with a Bonus Scene to read after the credits roll, taken from another's perspective of the aftermath! Each Bonus Scene is 100% optional, of course - though they can be accessed from the title screen at any time, they're not necessary to get the full picture.
Written, programmed and drawn entirely by one person, Veins Like Tapeworms has over 250 full-screen illustrations for a player to discover. A gallery in the title screen ensures players can revisit any piece they may have enjoyed, or see what images they haven't unlocked yet.
Tired of visual novels that simply loop one song on repeat, with no regard for sound effects to coordinate with in-game events? Look no further with Veins Like Tapeworms; the game's ambience has been meticulously crafted for utmost immersion, and practically begs for headphones.
Information / Review English
Veins Like Tapeworms is a visual novel game with horror elements developed by Awesome Trinket.
Gameplay / Story
In psychology, monotony is the state of reduced mental activity, which also manifests as fatigue, reduced performance, or unusual fluctuations in performance. This condition is caused by the absence of stimulating stimuli. Monotony can be mild or severe; severe monotony can be very painful for the individual or, if prolonged, extremely harmful. Another consequence of a stimulus-poor environment is a reduction in the individual's ability and willingness to learn. This makes monotony a pedagogical issue – with the focus on how the educational situation should be designed to avoid monotony, or how an educator creates a stimulating environment to initiate, promote, or encourage learning processes. In this game, we play as Demian, and he is experiencing precisely this state. Our task is to break this state and distinguish between reality and the past. To do so, we will take on any danger and even step over dead bodies if necessary. Beautiful, hand-drawn concepts await us, which are presented to us in the various chapters.
Pros
+ First-class protagonist + Deep story + Charm meets art + Beautiful, hand-drawn illustrations + Coherent musical score + 6 different endings + Unlockables + Good value for money
Cons
- Only a few languages available
Conclusion
Veins Like Tapeworms offers you a combination of art and a deep story, driven by an outstanding protagonist.
Gameplay / Geschichte
To say this game was heart-wrenching would be an understatement. From the author's demo I played back when it was still just an entry for a game jam, I was hooked. The writing style of AwesomeTrinket has only ever made me more and more enthralled, wanting to read more, know more about this pained, truly tortured soul that is Demian. This isn't just a story about some evil, vile being, this is a story about a sad, lonely individual who only ever wanted love and acceptance. As harsh as some elements in the game can appear, it's not as if it's black and white. Truly, I believe this to be a nuanced, grey area of morality, mental torture and self hatred. No one is saying certain actions are acceptable, from a humanitarian standpoint of course. Demian wanted the one thing everyone should be allowed to have...and was flat out told "No. You don't deserve it.". I feel I, too, would have a festering mind, a pit of hate and self doubt and sorrow just grow and grow. And, only ever want just one person, just one THING to show me kindness...even if it wasn't human. I relate to Demian in several ways, throughout the story. As someone nonbinary, I appreciated the representation and the very real similarities between scrutiny and expectations placed on you from your birth given/assigned gender stereotype(s). This VN made me weep. I was waiting so eagerly for the final product to come out, and was one of the first people to purchase it on release day; I do not regret this purchase in the least. Every route feels real, feels like you could expect someone to think the way Demian does, relate to them and once you get to know who they are, you might find yourself thinking "yeah, I'd probably feel that way too, to be honest, if my life were like this." At least, that's the feeling I got quite often throughout my gameplay. Veins Like Tapeworms is a beautiful game. A horrific and sad game. A fleeting and longing type of feeling. The grungy aspect is perfectly fitting, adding to the horror and stomach churning, just sorrowful emotions of the entire narrative, to me. The scenery, music, and art just felt really perfect for each scene, each moment and especially the sound effects when certain events were happening. This game makes me wish I could have said things to those who have made me feel pain and sorrow. it also feels so, so real when it comes to what people might feel or think or say, given the circumstances. without spoiling anything in this review, I felt my heart twist in sadness when certain things were said to Demian. They only ever wanted one thing. One little thing, and it would've meant their whole, wide world. It's heartbreaking. It's beautiful, it's painful, it's a fantastic read. Even with the fictional elements in the story, everything else (worldbuilding-wise) felt very real, very rooted in a reality of our own. The things and people that interact with Demian feel like you could put yourself in their shoes, like you could imagine the hell and annoyance of "everyday life" at times. I want to cry more, the more I think about it all, haha. I hope you'll try this game out, those of you who have read this far. And thank you, AwesomeTrinket, for bringing this beautiful story to life. I'm so glad to have gotten to play it back then, and I'm even more pleased to have gotten to play to the end. The real end. Thank you for this little treasure, and the fact that this was made entirely in RPG Maker MZ is a PHENOMENAL feat for such a detailed visual novel!! 10/10, would cry again <3
Dark and Depressing, but very well-written
This game is dark and SO well written. I'll leave a better review when I'm done playing it but holy crap get this game. Great Visual Novel. EDIT: I beat the game (well, got an ending that took me through all 8 chapters) and apparently it is the WORST (read: happiest) ending according to the dev. I still liked it, but it does mean there is a fair amount of replayability in this title, which is always welcome. I thought the artwork was unique. It's not perfect, but it has this quality about it that I enjoyed, and found it a breath of fresh air from most visual novels with cookie-cutout anime artwork or, worse, AI slop. The sound design was well done as well, and the writing was top-notch. What I didn't find all that great was the game's tone and pace. While I LOVED the game, calling it a slow burn is an insult to slowly burning things. It feels like it takes FOREVER to really start to ramp up, and I could just be a victim of my own choices. It's not a BAD thing, honestly, but if you're here for horror and gore and violence, it's gonna be a while. The other thing is the oppressively depressing mood the game has. Again, not a BAD thing, but it's so overwhelming at times, you really gotta be in a good headspace for it. So honestly, my gripes are more pet peeves than actual faults for the game. It never crashed once, and while it took forever to get to the 'meat' of the game, it never felt like the dialog or story pacing were off. Just took its sweet time to get there =P Def worth getting.
I came across this game the day before it released entirely by happenstance. When I saw the trailers, I got so excited and knew I had to play it. I'm so thankful I did. Do you like nonhuman/human dynamics where you aren't sure where one character begins and the other ends? Do you enjoy the trope of body sharing in media such as Venom or Malevolent and have been craving more? Look no further! The two main characters play off of each other so well here and their conversations together are honestly my favorite parts of this game. The game itself has a very melancholy, almost somber atmosphere, especially paired with a fantastic soundtrack that goes perfectly with every scene. I love the piano tracks a lot, and I often found myself pausing just to listen to the music. Demian as a character is melancholy too, bleak and bitter, but there are always little moments of light, of hope despite everything. I think how dark the setting is just makes these moments all the more significant and real. Now onto our other main character, Slyce...what can I say, other than I love it? It offers a different perspective from Demian's humanity that is all the more interesting because of that differance (and also the commonalities) between them. Not to mention, it can purr! What else could you possibly ask for out of your vaguely silly, vaguely ominous companion?
It's the only one that truly understands and accepts Demien. The two of them are not lonely only when they're together. Or at least that was my interpretation; that they both are inherently missing something within themselves that they find in each other.
I still have gotten only three out of six endings, and their dynamic drastically changes depending on Demien's choices, so really it's up to the player how they want this relationship to go! I love psychological horror. I love monsters who in their love only become more monstrous. I love queer stories about being who you are in spite of a world that seeks to change you. I love this game.
finally, the evil aroace nonbinary rep that we all deserve!! Demian is such a great and well-defined protagonist and I loved all the different ways their story could go. Well worth buying :) genuinely so good that I would buy a lorebook dlc
Veins Like Tapeworms oozes passion and creative vision from every mold-rotten pore, and more than earns its price in terms of the content it delivers - even within the bounds of the six core endings, there’s a slew of hidden or dynamic interactions, alternate paths, bonus scenes, and easter-egg unlockables, all of which elegantly weave together to service the rich character histories and tracts of deliciously visceral prose that make VLT such a special work of fiction. Gore. Gender. Generational violence. The ever-fleeting nature of ‘selfhood’ once the body has been subsumed into hosting the mind of an ancient, flesh-hungry symbiote. Gut-churning, sinew-twisting body horror, and the desperate struggle to persist as something less (...or, perhaps, more?) than simply human. If anything here catches the eye, the reader is doing themselves a disservice by electing not to experience one of the most delightfully hand-crafted works of written horror presently available. Words cannot recommend VLT enough. The carrion-flower parasites are winding their roots through my brain, and they will not be letting go any time soon.
This story ventures into what it means to search the self, what it means to be you, seeing your identity, are you being true to it? Have you been living your entire life with a mask, perhaps hiding who you really are from who you love but you know would hurt you if they knew. Maybe even hiding who you are even if they might be someone who would understand. Bloom and become who you were meant to be in this dread filled slow burn psychological horror that explores what making yourself known may entail. Is it enacting revenge on those who may have wronged you, or perhaps being free and living a life stolen from you now with your newfound inner partner. The art and sound design is gorgeous and haunting, and choices leading you to the many endings is amazing, with each route carefully thought out and realized. You'll be feeling the intense conclusions throughout, and an immense cg gallery to take in after your routes!
Nonbinary they/themisms that render the game unreadable applied to the protagonist who unlike the name and screenshots imply is clearly a woman with tits. Also far too expensive. Refunded - can probably buy 4 better games for this price.
banger ass game, couldn't hit Carl with my truck though love like every real thing the game covers with Demian, especially the pilot brain thing please buy this and provide the awesome awesometrinket with pizza
A VN that has positively flattened my veins like no other. The story explores inhumanity at a delicious crux of intersections found in the character of Demian Zhao- dealing with the dissonance of gender dysphoria, festering generational trauma, and the long, daily degradation of self in labor and poverty. The story moves forward in fascinating ways from here, driven by Demian's history and the new upheaval of living with the horror that now blooms inside them. Veins Like Tapeworms is made with a passion, sincerity, and guttural emotional resonance that comes when its pulled from the very guts of its maker. Every CG and line, every character and how their histories and humanities are warped by Demian's festered rage, and every choice has been crafted with care for a story and a vision that resonate with any who have felt the sludge of the world eating one away from without and within. A VN that's well worth its value to experience- every rotting, blooming step.
