Ehh ta specyficzna muzyczka z tych przygodowych gier horror like, łezka się w oku kręci. Piękne emu szaleństwo z DOSboxa
A fine museum piece Finally got my revenge on that werewolf after 30 years of nightmares
Veil of Darkness, developed by Event Horizon Software and published by SNEG, is a gothic adventure-RPG hybrid that stands out for its atmosphere, narrative design, and willingness to let players find their own path. Originally released in the early 1990s, it places you in the role of an ordinary cargo pilot whose routine flight ends in disaster when a supernatural force pulls his plane down into a secluded Romanian valley. Stranded in a land ruled by a vampire lord, the story quickly shifts into a tale of survival, mystery, and gradual resistance against a curse that has consumed the region. What immediately defines the experience is its open-ended structure. Rather than directing players through a strict sequence of objectives, the game allows exploration of the valley in a largely non-linear way. You move between villages, forests, and ruins, interacting with inhabitants and uncovering fragments of information that slowly reveal what must be done. Progress often comes from understanding relationships between characters, items, and events, rather than following clear instructions. This design can feel disorienting at first, especially for players accustomed to modern guidance systems, but it gradually becomes one of the game’s greatest strengths, fostering a genuine sense of discovery. The gameplay blends adventure-style puzzle-solving with light RPG mechanics. Conversations play a central role, as you gather clues and piece together the larger narrative. The dialogue system is particularly notable, allowing players to input keywords to explore topics beyond standard responses. This creates a more investigative feel, as if you are actively probing for information rather than passively receiving it. At the same time, it can lead to moments of frustration when the correct keywords are not immediately obvious, making certain interactions feel less intuitive than they might otherwise be. Combat exists but is not the primary focus. Encounters with hostile creatures such as wolves, undead beings, and other threats are present, but they are typically brief and straightforward. Success often depends more on preparation—having the right weapons or items—than on mechanical skill. This reinforces the game’s emphasis on exploration and problem-solving, ensuring that the pacing remains consistent with its narrative-driven approach. Rather than dominating enemies through force, you are encouraged to think carefully about how to overcome them. The atmosphere is where Veil of Darkness truly excels. The setting is steeped in Eastern European folklore, with a strong emphasis on superstition, isolation, and the unseen forces that shape the valley. Villagers speak in hushed tones, environments feel oppressive and quiet, and the presence of the vampire lord looms over everything. The game creates tension not through constant action, but through a persistent sense of unease. It feels like a place frozen in time, where every discovery brings you closer to understanding the curse that binds it. Visually, the game uses an isometric perspective with detailed sprite-based environments that, while dated, still convey a strong sense of place. The design of locations and characters reflects the game’s gothic tone, and the interface, though somewhat cumbersome by modern standards, remains functional. The character portrait system, which reflects health and status changes, adds a subtle layer of immersion, even if inventory management can become unwieldy over time. There are, however, clear signs of its age. Some puzzles are obscure and rely on logic that is not always well communicated, leading to moments of trial and error. The inventory system can feel restrictive, especially when juggling multiple items, and the controls may seem rigid compared to contemporary games. The pacing is also deliberately slow, which may not appeal to players looking for more immediate or action-oriented experiences. Despite these limitations, the game’s strengths outweigh its flaws. It offers a cohesive and immersive experience that combines exploration, storytelling, and atmosphere in a way that feels distinctive even today. Its willingness to trust the player—to let them explore, experiment, and figure things out—gives it a sense of depth that many modern games lack. In the end, Veil of Darkness is best appreciated as a methodical, atmospheric journey rather than a fast-paced adventure. It rewards patience, curiosity, and attention to detail, offering a memorable experience for those willing to engage with its systems. While its mechanics may feel dated, its mood and design remain compelling, making it a standout example of early adventure-RPG hybrids. Rating: 7/10
Alone in the dark fatto da uno stronzo
Tacaram no dosbox e colocaram pra vender.
It was my first time playing the game, so I have no nostalgia for it. Even so some aspects like the clunky controls and combat didn't age well, I really enjoyed the game. It has a unique atmosphere and a charming story, together paired with the puzzles in the game, those things are the driving factor for the game. I liked the pixel art and those little animated cutscene. I also liked that for some puzzles you have to talk to people and type in a word with the keyboard. It's a little oldschool thing, but every time a word I typed was recognized I felt really clever. Overall a really unique game that blends point and click adventure with action in a weird way together, that doesn't work perfectly, but is still very enjoyable and unique.
