Here's a great one from a time when games were different because devs were still figuring out how to design systems. Movement is clunky, so is equipping items. The game does not hold your hand. There is no quest log. You have to type keywords you learn using contextual clues to prompt dialog and obtain certain items. This game is weird, and it's difficult, and it's got some very cool ideas in it you just don't see in modern gaming. I love it.
One of the best damn vampire games ever. Yes, this game has a serious vampire in it. Not no weak sauce early-20s-punk style, or mellow-dramatic vampire that we get so often. To this day, this game still features one of the most daunting vampire stories out there. Let's make one thing clear though. This game has a hedge maze at one point, and it SUCKS. It really puts a damper on the game. I love this game to death, and yet I will quickly admit the hedge maze is freaking awful. Be warned. I just completed the game here on Steam. It's been about 10 years since I played it. The hedge maze didn't even play music. I am not sure if the game actually lacks music for that part, or if it's just a dosbox / game setting thing. Once the hedge maze is done though, the rest of the game is fine. If you're going to play this, I assure you that's the worst part. The rest of the game is worth it though. And the ending is just ... you don't get many endings as well set up and satisfying as that. Be prepared to pay attention to the dialog. You have to read closely and type in words you picked up from conversations. The game will not highlight every keyword and provide all the keywords on a silver platter for you. That's intentional, like it or not. You have to use your eyeballs and your brain and work clues out manually in your head. That's how games were back in the 90s. It's not hard, you just need to realize that you gotta do it. Again, it's intentional, just embrace it. Enjoy piecing things together yourself for once. Games nowadays won't even give you the chance to work puzzles out on your own, even if you wanted to.

This game is one of my all time favorites, it`s an important part of my childhood. I completed it back in the 90` without ANY walkthroughs. It took me years, spending countless hours of gameplay figuring everything out by myself, I remember vividly when I discovered the secret room in the castle, I was in a state of bliss for several days. Completing this game is by far my major gaming achievement, kids today would never invest that much time and energy in a game anymore.
PROS: Cool idea executed in this game. It is point and click if you're into that. This is a good old school game that's in my top 10. Glad it finally made it to Steam. CONS: One, intro is taking too long. There used to be a way to speed this up and get right to the menu. Two, not sure Steam has worked out all the bugs yet. Still haVing issues. Three, the hedge maze has always been a nightmare.
The UI takes some getting used to, the movement is pretty janky, and combat is barely passable, but man do I love this game regardless. The story is fun, the puzzles are decent, and the blend of point & click adventure with ARPG elements feels just great. I wish someone would do a remaster or remake of this game with improved UI and combat. Rating: ★★★★☆
XD ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- English - Inglés: They really managed to ruin a childhood classic. - The game claims to support Spanish, but if you launch it in Spanish, it doesn't even start. It turns out the only way to install and play it is in English. - None of the upscaling options actually work. It doesn't support any of the modern standards it claims to have. That's not even the biggest issue—it's a minor thing—but it's still another point against it. - The last update was released before the game even launched. I get that this is a game from 1996, but at least show it a little love. Improve the screen scaling or do something... anything. - The only way to play it in Spanish—and this is the funniest part—is to download a 30-year-old pirated copy, extract it, copy all of its files into the "saves" folder, and only then will you be able to play in Spanish. At that point, I might as well just play the pirated version. Why even own it on Steam if I have to install a cracked copy just to enjoy it the way I want? I could have saved my money if that's the only way to make it work. "Brilliant developers." The whole reason I buy games on Steam or GOG is to avoid shady downloads or the possibility of malware hidden inside random executables—not to install a second copy of the game just so I can play it in Spanish. To make things even worse, the pirated version also comes with remastered music and completely blows this official release out of the water. - At least it's only a 16 MB download. - Why give me four language options if only English actually works? I know the Steam store page says the game only supports English, but then why even include four language choices in the game if only one of them works? - This one is hilarious: the opening cinematic runs at about 2–4 FPS. Are you serious? I can run Crimson Desert, God of War, Cyberpunk 2077, EA Sports FC 26, Gothic 1 Remake, and The Last of Us at High or Ultra settings without any issues, but this game can't even play its intro video properly. The cinematic itself isn't a big deal, but it really shows how little care went into this release. This is a game that defined horror gaming on PC for many of us back in the day. Stop thinking only about making money and give us a decent product. I'm probably forgetting a few more issues, but this port gets a 3/10 from me. Those three points are purely for the nostalgia—not because this release actually deserves them. PS: It was good, in the Spanish title, to write and say "wolf" to everyone, they didn't have patience with you sometimes... XD
Veil of Darkness is an eerie, atmospheric gem from the early PC horror era that still holds up, mostly. I loved this game when I briefly played it in the '90s and revisiting it now feels like opening a haunted time capsule. The graphics, music, sound design & overall aesthetic still drip w/ gothic charm, making it a standout in its genre. That said, the controls haven’t aged well - clunky and often awkward, especially in isometric movement - but they’re not game-breaking, just frustrating at times. With a remaster or even a light modern tweak, this could absolutely shine again. As it stands, it’s a flawed but fascinating classic worth experiencing.
