Vague Lizards, developed by PIVKO GAMES and published by Radiance Star, is a small-scale third-person action RPG that leans heavily into humor, folklore-inspired absurdity, and straightforward hack-and-slash combat. Rather than aiming for epic gravitas or deep systemic complexity, the game embraces a deliberately scrappy tone, presenting itself as a rough-edged folk tale brought to life through exaggerated characters, eccentric enemies, and a world that feels both earnest and self-aware. The narrative sets the tone immediately with a premise that borders on parody. In a rural, Old Slavic–inspired setting, the local balance of life is disrupted when strange reptilian creatures steal the sacred Baikal Voditsa, a mystical substance tied to vitality and survival. What follows is less a grand heroic saga and more a chaotic village response, as unlikely warriors rise to confront the titular lizards. The story is intentionally simple, serving primarily as a vehicle to move players from one confrontation to the next, but its humor and cultural flavor give it a personality that distinguishes it from more generic fantasy plots. Gameplay is rooted in third-person melee combat, with players engaging waves of enemies using a variety of weapons that range from light blades to heavier, slower-hitting tools. Combat favors accessibility over precision, allowing players to jump in quickly without mastering complex combos or systems. Positioning, timing, and crowd control still matter, especially when facing groups of enemies, but the overall feel is forgiving and arcade-like rather than tactical. As players progress, light RPG elements such as upgrades and equipment improvements provide a sense of forward momentum without overwhelming the core action. Exploration and structure are intentionally uncomplicated. The game guides players through a sequence of environments connected by simple objectives, including clearing enemy camps, assisting villagers, and reclaiming key locations. Side activities exist to add variety, but they rarely stray far from the central loop of movement, combat, and reward. This simplicity keeps the pace brisk, ensuring that players are rarely stuck wondering what to do next, though it may also leave those craving depth or systemic variety wanting more. Visually, Vague Lizards reflects its indie origins with a stylized presentation that prioritizes function and tone over realism. Environments are readable and distinct enough to support gameplay, while character and enemy designs lean into exaggeration. The lizard foes themselves range from comical to mildly menacing, reinforcing the game’s blend of threat and humor. While the graphics do not aim for high fidelity, they align well with the game’s lighthearted identity and modest scope. Sound design and music support the action effectively, emphasizing rhythm and momentum during combat encounters. Weapon impacts, enemy noises, and ambient effects provide clear feedback, even if they lack the polish or variety of higher-budget productions. Voice lines and dialogue delivery add another layer of charm, sometimes intentionally awkward, sometimes unexpectedly earnest, further reinforcing the sense that the game is not afraid to laugh at itself. The game’s reception reflects its niche appeal. Players who appreciate indie projects with personality, humor, and uncomplicated combat often find Vague Lizards surprisingly enjoyable, praising its creativity and willingness to be strange. Others note that its mechanics and content are limited, and that the experience can feel repetitive once the novelty wears off. These criticisms are valid, but they also underline the importance of approaching the game with the right expectations. Ultimately, Vague Lizards succeeds by committing fully to its identity as a quirky, compact action RPG rather than aspiring to be something larger or more polished than it is. Its charm lies in its oddities, its folkloric flavor, and its straightforward approach to action. For players looking for a light, humorous adventure with simple combat and a distinctly offbeat tone, it offers a memorable journey that embraces imperfection as part of its appeal. Rating: 6/10
What parents think of the games we play
