UuultraC is one of the craziest game stories I've ever had the joy of experiencing. Crazy characters, plot twists that come out of nowhere and leave you dazed, incredible artwork, and relationships that I was actively rooting for, just to name a few points. HOWEVER, I cannot whole heartedly recommend this game for one reason: Chapter 2's transphobia is absolutely vile and impossible to look past. I want to open this review with the negatives because I feel like people need to be aware of what they are getting into. I'll use spoiler tags once I feel it starts affecting the plot, but know that the opening of Chapter 2 contains about 2 hours of nonstop transphobic stereotypes and fearmongering, and this continues throughout the whole chapter. Chapters 1 & 3 have no elements of this, which makes it even more shocking. So without further ado, let me list some of the choices the author made. Trans women/okama/crossdressers are depicted as sexual deviants, who prey on innocent cis people for their own enjoyment. An intersex character is referred to as a "futanari", and enters a sexual relationship with a minor. Said minor is a trans man who (in my reading of the text) is implied to be trans due to sexual trauma. The inciting incident of chapter 2 involves a man dressing as a woman who kidnaps Choutsugai to rape and kill him (he is explicitly not trans, he states he only does this to lure in men). Spoilers start here
Isshiki is vaguely male vaguely female vaguely nonbinary, and is also implied to be this way due to sexual trauma. He rapes Choutsugai, turning him into a kaiju against his will. Kaiju "disease" in this route feels like it was meant to represent AIDS or other STDs (as its passed through sex).
This one isn't bad but just baffling, at one point the translation uses the term "femboy" which felt both completely like the wrong usecase and out of place in the time period. At most he's a twink. All of these events and characters exist for one reason. To show to Choutsugai that even though he may be a bigot who hates gay people, trans people, and anyone outside his "normal", that he is also one of them. The issue is that the story does nothing but validate his outlook on life. Of course he hates gay people! All they do is assault him! Of course he hates men who dress as women, all they do is trick him to try and kill him! I wanted to like route 2. I love two characters who absolutely suck who end up together in the end. But I could not root for him without acknowledging the only reason I was was because of all of these transphobic and harmful stereotypes. Now that that's out of the way, the good things. First, the art. One of my issues with Hashihime was the lack of CGs, and I can say that that has been 1000% fixed. They're gorgeous. The soundtrack is also amazing, although the songs are very short and don't always loop so you might be left in silence. Characters (other than previously mentioned issues) are fun and endearing, and I found myself rooting for the side characters just as much as the main couples. The 3 relationships were also very fun and different, although my favourite is probably still Akira and Shoutarou... Akira's dogboy energy is just so cute. Finally, the story. I can't even describe it. Just get ready for a wild ride and to nod along to anything that happens, it will probably make sense later. And if it doesn't... Well. Poop! I know what everyone is here for so I'll say it: the sex scenes are good. Chapter 3's was my favourite because I'm a sicko. Chapter 2 mostly has dub/noncon but it is the relationship between two villains. And chapter 1 is just very sweet. Overall, I'm very torn on this game. If not for the ONE GLARING ISSUE I would recommend it so easily to anyone who wants a crazy BLVN. But as it stands... I still recommend it, I just want people to know what they're getting into beforehand.
