PEAK absoluto.
ABSOLUTE CINEMA

One of my favorite games I've played this year. So much love was poured into this project, and I'm here for it. There are multiple things I want to talk about, and I'll try to cover them without spoiling much because I want this game to reach more eyes and ears with what it's trying to tell (and because the story being set in the Philippines really pulls on my heartstrings a bit). The Visuals: The 2D visuals are really amazing. From characters to environment, there was no moment where I felt the game was weak visually; it tells a story in itself if you really take the time to notice. It all adds to what the game is trying to tell, be it through color, weather, detail, light, background, foreground; each part is crafted so intricately to help you feel what you're feeling when you play the game. The Music: Beautiful. It sets the tone for each part of the story and really gets you feeling the feels for whatever the game's trying to make you feel. Although some parts some sounds interfere with each other; I don't mean when there's a mix of aircon humming and someone sweeping garbage outside, I enjoy those types of audio effects as it really captures the hectic mish-mash of sounds you experience in the Philippines; I mean the background music playing over someone playing the piano, it kind of put me off when that happened on a few occasions, however it didn't necessarily get me out of my immersion, I just felt there could've been focus on one rather than trying to play both at the same time. The Gameplay: Nothing really notable. Although, when you're not pressing the spacebar to continue a dialogue bubble, the gameplay is pretty immersive. I wouldn't say it's fun, but it really pushes you to be a part of the setting. Sometimes I just find myself going "wow, didn't think they'd add this." One such instance was at the start of the game where I had to actually use and navigate through the ticket machine to ride a train, almost a 1-to-1 with the experience you get in the Philippines. One of my favorites is during parts where you just get to scroll through social media and read articles; you can really explore what Mark's friends are up to, read articles about the underlying mystery of the world you're in, and a few other stuff. But as I said, it didn't really get me ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rainbows and pissing myself; it was just a nice addition that really puts you into the main character's shoes and explores more about the game's universe. The Story: Amazing, really the main attraction of the game. It tells a message, and it tells it well. There's nothing much I can say here without spoiling, so just take my word for it. Dialogue is good, funny at times; a bunch of symbolism; amazing characters, all memorable and playing big roles in the story; and a rollercoaster of feelings. Ending remarks: If you’re interested in story games about healing, then you’ll love this one, and if you’re Filipino, then you’ve found something that’ll stick with you for a while.
