About

Unprompted has unintentionally become a time capsule— a record of an earlier moment in our relationship with AI, when its limitations were easier to see, and its outputs felt more alien. Today, it offers a small window back to that moment— a reminder of how this technology once appeared to us.
What is Unprompted? Each carefully curated artwork was created from a hidden prompt. Your task is to uncover it — and, along the way, encounter how the algorithm interprets its own creative process.

MoTU welcomes all to join in the journey of machine learning.
MoTU engages all visitors through a gamified art experience.
MoTU builds inclusive spaces for all humans to encounter the machine mind.
The experience of MoTU is guided by four core principles:

Gazing carefully at each artwork, you begin to notice familiar elements. Take a bold guess and type the words into the text box. Press enter to check for correct matches and earn points for each correct word. Don’t worry, guess as many times as you like. Any artworks you choose to skip for now will be shown again later.

If unsure what you’re seeing, spend 10 points to reveal one word of the prompt.

The progress you’ve made completing prompts will allow you to access certain gifts from the gift shop, where artworks are brought to life across a wide range of products. Don’t miss out!

Completing the prompt for certain artworks will trigger A.I.-generated text descriptions of that artwork, allowing you the opportunity for an extra level down the rabbit-hole of machine-learning associations. More broad A.I.-generated statements on the future role of A.I. in art and society will also be found at the start of each gallery visit, slowly building a background narrative, subtly reframing what you are seeing as you progress.
Unprompted was created in early 2022, at a time when generative AI was new and visibly strange. In the years since, AI-generated images have become far more polished— and far more controversial. This game is not an attempt to replace artists or shortcut creative labor. It was an experiment in designing a game around machine-made content: asking what kinds of play, reflection, and curiosity emerge when the machine's role is highlighted rather than hidden.
Unprompted was created by Matt Eshleman. The idea was born during the Shanghai COVID lockdown of spring 2022, when he was confined to his apartment for two months, making experimental games. During this time, Matt learned to both deeply fear and cautiously embrace the coming AI.
Unprompted is neither wholly human-made, nor wholly machine-generated. As such, the designer takes sole responsibility for the content of this game. Images were generated with Craiyon. Some texts were generated in part with ChatGPT and GPT-3, OpenAI's large-scale language generation models. Generated draft language was subsequently reviewed and edited to the developer's liking.

Unprompted is a great way to get an understanding of generative AI without having to go the painstaking work of sifting through hundreds of not so great images generated, and just get the good generations served up and interact with them in a fun way. I'm thinking this could be a fun social game for home parties, like pictionary. Definitely will give that a try. Overall the game has an amazing indie feel and the UI is super creative.
To be clear, I am not a gamer. Far from it. I haven't really played computer games since my son was a child and he's now in his mid-thirties. But I am not alone in thinking that this A.I. thing is truly revolutionary so the chance to explore this in a way that promises to be both fun and enlightening grabbed my attention. I was not disappointed. It was fun to try to "reverse engineer" the A.I. image machinery and I loved the fact that as the game unfolds you get the added vantage of A.I. commenting on itself and its creations. Great fun. Highly recommended.
this is a fascinating game sprouted from a simple but unique concept. ive never played any game like this before, and i enjoyed the gameplay thoroughly. also its a plus that some of the prompts are quite funny.
A genuinely fun little puzzle game made using AI art c: Some results are pretty funny, intentionally or not and its a nice window into how AI currently thinks. It's not much of a game to be honest - there is not much story or progression, though you can unlock new effects and see new things with every new session. It's pretty cheap so i'd recommend it - even if you don't like AI art, it's still a fun distraction that will give you some laughs at the thought process of AI.
This is a pretty cool puzzle game with a unique idea. I had no idea AI has come this ability to make such abominations. Key highlights were the terrifying Baby Pope and a pretty spot on Anime Picasso. Had some good laughs, and I can definitely see this being a fun party game. I found some of the puzzles pretty much impossible to guess, but the majority of the ones I did you could reasonably get. There is a hint system and the ability to skip ones that stump you, so when I come across one that I can't even begin to figure out sometimes a single hint is enough to get me rolling. The game has a kind of quirkiness to it that I found pretty charming and I really look forward to seeing what the developer comes up with next! This is definitely worth the asking price.

my experience it guess is an OK 'guess the prompt' thing. prompt guessing/correcting by the game can either land you in the correct guess, or make you guess several times, like 'lifting' wont be detected if its 'deadlifting' but 'dead' will be detected as 'decomposing' i think it could be fun if this had a multiplayer option. it might be a bit of entertainment if you are hanging out with people and want to play something for a couple of minutes. there are better party games however out there in steam available for you to get right now. this /could/ be good, it needs a bunch more of work. Score 4/10 i highly recommend that if you wanna get it, you wait for a good discount. It's interesting to see video games utilize AI generated content. I don't usually play puzzle games but this has been quite fun.
Quite Fun
my girlfriend and i had much fun playing it together, some of the prompts can be difficult which we liked. also liked the retro looking visuals
Great concept of what if AI could curate a gallery of its own images. What kind of weird stuff would they create?! Get this game because its cool, nerds.
