Reviews
Hey! Writing as a fan of kaizo hacks but i wanted to make an informative review based on 15 minutes of ATTEMPTING to play this game. As far as the game plays, I was enjoying it! However, I tried 3 different controllers and had the same issues with all 3. (SNES to USB, PS4, Wired Switch Controller) The steam library said partial support for SNES, full support with PS4, and no support for Switch, however all 3 controllers had the exact same issues. (I do not own an XBOX controller but im assuming its the one controller that works) 1. Upon launching the game for the first time with SNES the main menu scrolls up when you press down and down when you press up. This seemed to be a DPad issue with all 3 controllers. 2. The jump/select button was the button in the square position on all 3 controllers. This also pushed the spin jump button to the triangle position which is extremely awkward especially when you're used to SMW controls. 3. Keyboard also doesn't work? Some keys actually seemed to do things. I could restart the game from the menu with the 'R' key and toggle language with the '2' key I think it was? Also pretty sure I could move the cursor up and down but i was unable to select any options. Didn't check to see if keyboard worked in game. 4. Lastly DPad does NOT work in the actual game. Not sure if this is true with a compatible controller but being required to use control sticks was almost a deal breaker. The actual deal breaker was the snap back that happened after holding a direction and letting go. This was not an issue with the controller itself as I tried 2 different controllers with sticks and had the same odd result. The actual culprit was quite intriguing though. If (for example) you were to hold the control stick ALMOST all the way to the left, your character would move in the right direction. And the same with holding the stick ALMOST all the way to the right, you'd move left. So I'm assuming the snap back is actually caused from when the stick hits this not so precise position and snaps you back the opposite way. Not seeing any reviews having any of these issues, don't know if anyone else would like to chime in or maybe give a solution. Celeste and Pepper grinder work perfectly fine with SNES to USB so it would be AMAZING if I could get the same experience here. PLEASE DEV! Your game seemed like it was going to be sooooo GOOD. Love the art style and thank you for giving difficulty options but unfortunately gonna have to pass for now. (ps also saw the most recent hotfix fixed the double cursors, and I can confirm that it did NOT)
controls are wonky. With an Xbox controller it says press A but you actually have to press X. Controls menu option in settings does not work at all. Double cursor sometimes, and when you press up or down on the D-Pad in the menu it goes the opposite direction. Gameplay is fun, but controls desperately need to be fixed. Hope to see it fixed soon so I can review it postitively
Pretty fun kaizo game, as someone who plays a tooooon of kaizo stuff it's really nice seeing these kinds of games pop up. It's not perfect, some parts are a little janky like music not playing randomly and whatnot, and the final boss is imo not great, but it's definitely a game I'd recommend if you're into kaizo games or platformers in general. Also,
the kaizo block on the very last level (especially the one in kaizolike mode)
was pure evil and I loved it.
"Unlinked Mask" is a difficult precision 2D platformer. You have to be a fan of said genre to be able to enjoy this experience to its fullest. Every move, every jump, every hit will make your heart pump! You'll feel a crazy adrenaline rush and you'll overflow from satisfaction upon a sweet victory or from rage when you, yet again, fail miserably and die for the 100th time... Carefully crafted! There are 2 modes, normal and kaizu. Normal mode is challenging but Kaizu mode is agonizing and brutally difficult! It isn't for the average player, that's for sure. It is perfect though, for anyone crazing a true challenge based on skills! The mechanics are simple in nature but hard in excecution. They require extreme precision, focus, reflexes and skills. Again, it isn't for those looking to pass their time with a simple game. It's quite hard. The checkpoints are usually fair to the player and well placed. The timed sequences might become your biggest adversary! Or the jumps... Or something else along the way! ^^ You will love and hate everything at the same time but, you will like this little guy with reminiscent GameBoy aesthetics! That feeling of rage will flow through your veins once again and that joy upon making it through a hard part might even make you scream "OH YEAH"! The soundtrack fits perfectly and adds to the atmosphere of the game. The game is a prequel to the "Linked Mask" and thus, we see more stuff about the lore and how the events came to be. Interesting story! Responsive controls, cleverly designed levels, simple classic mechanics but combined in a frenzied way! It makes for an explosive mix! It's captivating, fun, exciting, frustrating, cute and generally awesome! It will make you fall in love with its charm! Try it out and keep pushing your limits! Just like older games, you'll die and retry, until you'll eventually get it right! Perfect for all! Old players and new! It won't hold your hand! ^^ For more reviews, follow my curator https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44864435-Mewesome-Reviews/

Unlinked mask is a prequel & DeMake of Linked Mask, another great Kaizo platformer by the same developer. This game is a frustrating blast from start to finish. A solid intro to Kaizos id say, difficult enough to be good time but not so much that a newer player would give up straight away like many other Kaizos tend to do. Normal playthrough might take you around an hour, can't speak on the Kaizomode cause that ♥♥♥♥ is hard results will vary lol All in all its a ton of fun, has an incredible soundtrack and i recommend it to anyone who likes a to suffer. And to those that don't like suffering, try it out you might come out the other end a Kaizo fan. 100%'d in a couple hours, wish there was more. Time to tackle Linked mask(again) and scream at my monitor some more
I've beaten it something like 4 times... Maybe one more before bed.
Severe controller issues, accuracy problems and a lack of clarity make the only precise thing about this "precision" platformer the guarantee that it frustrates you quickly with little to no payoff. I can't recommend Unlinked Mask, unless you like to punish yourself.
The controller support is in a pitiful state currently. See Kymerah_yo's review for more details.
