Yet another Polygon Art game shoved out with zero passion and care put into it. Video Review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw5itgstFgE Pros - Weapon Models are the best they've ever looked - Random Mission Generator is cool, but these guys have done the same thing for years. Nothing new here. Cons - Map is flat, empty and barren. Buildings look like they are made for N64 games. Nothing there. - Gunplay is lifeless. Hitmarkers and little recoil. No impactful feeling of firing weapons. Just... lifeless. - AI is the worst I've ever seen from Polygon Art. They either see you through foliage from 100m+ away, or they can't even see you standing in front of them - Walk underwater without taking damage - Vehicle physics are just terrible
When Easy Red 2 exists, why play this?

I played already other Parts from UA by Polygon Art and like the new Part "World War 2" much. A good and disturbing feeling to sneak around the tropical Island (Map Midway) and behind every bush/tree or something could be an enemy. Good Atmosphare, i hope when i unlocked the other Maps they will be as good. BTW Polygon is currently making a Vietnam Game, i just saw a Video from it, i think Unreal 5 and the Jungle, the Vietcong and "Fortunate Son" will be a great combination.
Above the english review and beyond is the german one. __________________________________________________________________________ The third part of the UA series. As I always say about Polygon Art, you can see how much he has improved with each game. This is a great sandbox with rougelite elements. Visually beautiful, at least I can say that about Midway, since I haven’t unlocked the second map (Stalingrad) yet and the other two are not included yet, but the pictures of the other three maps also look promising. Midway reminds a little of Crysis and FarCry 1+3 :D The new loot system motivates to explore and “Maybe I’ll find a better weapon for the rest of the round”. The game is already in a better state than its two predecessors at the start of Early Access. I can recommend it without hesitation if someone feels like having some WW2 shooting in between. Regarding bugs, despite the early stage, I haven’t noticed anything that would destroy the game in any way. So I can also give the green light there. Update after 3.1 hours on Midway: It has become damn good. It’s incredibly fun to take out enemies with carbines. And let the MPs speak in close combat. For starters, the Japanese rifle “Type 99” and the Japanese MP “Type 100” are highly recommended. The pistols don’t differ much so far, it only gets interesting again with the Welrod. I tip my hat to this beautiful map and the game behind it. PS To all others: If you have Raytracing enabled, interiors will be VERY dark and at night you won’t see anything at all. Please disable Raytracing in this case and wait for further development progress. Update 03.31.2023: In the Dev-Branch, most buildings now have interior lighting, even if not all of them. Ray tracing can therefore be used. Thanks to Polygon Art for the quick fix! To the Dev: A flashlight for night on the uniform would really be worth considering. And they did exist in real life at that time. Doesn’t have to be like the sun from Battlefield 3… just a little light so you can see something at night.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ what a broken, unfinished mess. It definitely has potential, however, it's so janky and the physics are so wild that I couldn't help but laugh when: a) my plane collided in to some palm trees and just stuttered in there, until I got out b) the PT boat almost launched itself out of the water when I was walking along trying to use the mounted guns (I couldn't) The gunplay is actually pretty slick, but the game is let down by the animations, physics and optimisation My Graohics card (2080 Super) was really chugging along without either DLSS or RT on I bought this because it was on sale and the concept sounded intriguing. It's not worth it though. Even for <$5
A technically nice sequel ruined by bad design decisions.
As a fan of Polygon Art games and the 1st WW2 series - Normandy '44 , I admire the superb re-created Normandy region with almost authentic layout of towns, villages, then I jumped to Final Stand which was better, so I had high hopes for this sequel game. Although this looks on paper like a complete - it has big four maps: Midway, Stalingrad, Tobruk and location in Italy . Instantly turned out to be a dissapointment for me due some poor developer decision.
Absurdity and Emptiness of Midway map.
The choice of Midway as a map from Pacific campaign and first map in game is a complete miscallculation. Not even historically, it's just dry, desolate, coral atoll used as airhead airfield and radar base, but its just eerily empty here. Worse, the devs cut their moves and put the French/German architecture in one spot, what looks simply comic and more a german Stielhandgranate as your frist equipment for US infantry. Nice. Instead this map, nearly any other location from Pacific would work much better. Put Guadalcanal and get more gameplay and rich landscape than this. What comes then as a bad choice - you can't skip Midway to play desert Tobruk or any other map. Instead you just need to grind until level 16! (that takes more than dozen plays on this atrocious Midway!) and 20+ more levels to unlock Tobruk?!! It's just bad designer decision and force you to grind or even punish your eyes... xd? That's what I feel about this in first hour - xD and even achievements seem to don't work. Ehhh Coming from even not highly accurate but still greater CoD: World at War , feels like a joke to me play this.
Minor Pros
Not to be all negative, this bad impression has some strenghts. The optimization which isn't the best but at least it catches your frames higher than in Normandy '44 - considering the engine and open world map - it's cool, okay. The weapons models have also been improved. Their scale in the hero's hand looks much better and fits well into the Pacific (despite that German grenades and architecture on Pacific map :)), looks better seems have good audio too. You can mask shots when thunderstorm rages on. Similar to what the Sniper Elite series have done. And what's the best part in the series - the dynamic weather and mission generator. It sparks an atmoshpere for me nicely, making this "life-forsaken Midway emptiness" bright and shine. Soundtrack is good, even it is short-looped it fits and brings nice vibe. It should be extended tho, and implemented in some way during missions.
Verdict:
I don't recommend it, even the Tobruk map might been the best map here, there's too much grind to unlock it, I would really have that to play, but I am not sure if I can handle beyond this first hour. If someone has made it here thanks, Semper Fi , better grab Normandy '44, Final Stand, maybe Battle of Bulge on a sale, or just their newest Vietnam game which is 10x better. Hammer out.
This game is a total win for anyone who loves to dive deep into strategy and get their hands dirty with some tactical gameplay. First off, the sound effects are killer. They're not just background noise; they really set the vibe and pull you into the game's world. And the gunplay? Super satisfying. You can feel every shot land, which is pretty cool. But don't think you can just run around shooting everything in sight. There's a ton of enemies, and the AI is tough. If you get swarmed, you're pretty much toast. You've got to be smart and strategic with every move, which makes winning all the more sweet. For the tactical gamer, this is your dream game. It's all about outsmarting your opponents and making those big-brain plays. And here's the kicker: for an early access game, it's surprisingly smooth. I didn't run into any bugs while playing, which is pretty rare these days. So, if you're into games that make you think and plan your next move carefully, this one's a gem. Definitely worth checking out.
Wertung: 3,2/5
