I absolutely love On-Rail Shooter games, and being a different one with being on foot, and giving me arcade-y nostalgia. It is pretty short, but the characters are lovely, their banter and conversations is hilariously better than some games as of lately. And even offers re-playability and challenges to change things up a bit. If you have played the first game, this is much different from it. You are no longer able to upgrade mods to increase damage, or speed, and the like. But instead adds a new flare to give you more options of Rapid Firing for weaker shots with Kit, Balanced Firing Speed with Medium Damage with Lars, or Powerful shots for slower Firing Speed with Deon. Casually you can pick and choose whoever you like and stick with them, or swap between them when in need. However, if you desire to get the best scoring, and gold medals, you may have to replay a level to test out who to swap to for the appropriate time to make the most out of a situation! Aside from the main game, there is an extra mode, with more challenges to attempt. Some of the challenges returning to the previous game's style of staying in one area, instead of running forward, and trying to get a high score. Also features some Easter Eggs to fans, and to previous works they have made. Very fun and re-playable, as you can swap different planets to attempt. The bosses always show up the same way you meet them, but swapping to specific planets can make the bosses easier or harder depending on the final obstacle of the planet when you reach them. Highly recommended!
I said in my Unit Down review that I'll buy the sequel as well and here I am now on the release day. Unit Down Charge turns the RTS element and Wild Guns style gameplay into a rail shooter and does the change well. The gameplay is smooth and feels good. Now you also get to play as the other characters as well. The voice acting adds charm to the levels and the characters say different quotes if they are the last one alive at the end of a mission which is a nice detail. Here's my opinion of the characters: Kit: Probably the best character and one you will want to be alive until the boss and preferably during it too. Kit has the lowest damage of 1 but the absolute highest fire rate making her the best in DPS. Thanks to fast fire rate you can defeat enemies quickly and swap targets as well on the fly. She is also the best at shooting those background objects that give points due to it. She is also the only one who can heal the crew so if she is defeated during the mission you will have a difficult time later. She only has 2 HP so be careful. Lars: Balanced character with 3 HP and damage of 2 with medium fire rate. He has a great power up which slows time and you can shoot very fast during it which makes getting high scores from big groups of enemies easier as the farther away they are when you shoot them, the more points you get. Note that power ups are disabled during bosses, Lars would be the best with them if they were enabled. Deon: The tank with highest damage of 3 but lowest fire rate. He can be a very powerful character if you can memorize where the enemies with 3 health appear so you can shoot them right as they appear. He can also throw a bomb which defeats several enemies at once. Knowing the enemy patterns will be a must for Deon as the enemies of 3 HP can be defeated quickly but a swarm of enemies with 2 or less HP will be better as Kit or Lars. But if you do memorize the enemy and boss patterns you can easily hit them even with less fire rate to deal the highest damage at once. The levels and bosses always add something new to keep things interesting and I finished the story in 1 sitting with 1 gold medal and almost a 2nd one in another level but always at least a silver. The pieces of story also made sure to keep me interested. Now I am looking forward to see what the survival mode and challenge modes are like once they are finished.
This game is like Star Fox + Sin and Punishment + Megaman + a lot of Saturday morning cartoon. It's clearly a passion project and I sincerely would love to see more of these characters and this gameplay and this universe. + oldschool in all the right ways + wears it's influences on its sleeve proudly + smooth arcadey gameplay + cheesy over the top voice acting, in a good way - the gameplay is all based on foot, which means it feels like there's less room to maneuver and results in simpler enemy damage patterns. I'd rate this game a 9/10 for what it is -- watch 20 seconds of gameplay and you'll know if this appeals to you. I really liked it and plan to 100% it. Reminds me of simple Xbox Live Arcade games.
Video Review https://youtu.be/KiYdNQAQkEg
Thanks For Putting Me In Game!
If you don’t know who Proper Developer (Randy) is, he’s one of the biggest Starfox fans you’ll ever meet. He’s always creating something new, whether it’s horror games for events featuring Mario, Luigi, Starfox, or just sharing his passion projects with the world. Unit Down, his previous game, was outstanding and phenomenal depsite not getting a whole lot of attention, but this didn't put him down. I highly recommend checking it out before diving into this one. Unit Down drops you into an arcade-style Starfox world with a fresh twist: new characters! Lars, Deon, Kit, and Garrison, who face off against the evil Dr. Aura. In the previous game, even though it only offered about an hour of content and had its fair share of bugs, I found myself playing for up to seven hours. I could see myself coming back repeatedly, just as I do with Starfox 64, that’s the magic Randy nailed. Moving on to Unit Down Charge, that magic seems to have vanished. After just an hour, I hit a wall. I didn’t want to continue with the story after playing it once. Part of that is because the game is linear, less influenced by player actions, and more on rails. You can make it harder, but the experience largely stays the same, even with a possible secret ending? So I decided to dip into the extra game modes, and that’s where my interest was reignited. In the extra settings, there’s a bunch of fan appreciation content, and among it, I’m actually included as a playable character (a redesigned Kit), along with a stage and stage name which I was always joking with him about. "Pawkt Dimension!!!" I didn’t expect that at all. I hadn’t done much for Randy beyond supporting his Kickstarter as best I could and sharing his progress with friends and communities and playing his game constantly, so seeing this was genuinely a shock having been immortalized in someone elses passion project. From one passionate creator and writer to a passionate coder and creator, thank you.
Issues
The biggest problem? Survival mode isn’t available yet. That’s the feature I want, and it’s where all my gripes about enjoying the game fully stem from. It's basically the first game’s settings and gameplay style that kept me engaged for hours, so I can't wait enough for it. While the rest of Unit Down Charge is more polished, visually and with controls, some of the same bugs from the first game remain. I can overlook them, not out of bias, but because I trust Randy will address them eventually. It’s also not as bad this time; enemies no longer spawn behind structures invisible while still shooting at you, which was a major problem in the first game, so that's a step up, even if it still is buggy.
Conclusion
If you respect indie developers who know how to draw you in and deliver fun, rewarding, and highly replayable games, support Randy. If not this game, check out his previous title. While some might perceive me as biased because I was included as a cameo in the game, that’s not the case. I would still call him out for mistakes, and I want him to succeed. That said, I couldn’t find many major problems here, Randy is thoughtful in the choices he makes and in what he decides to fix or remove from his projects.
A nice game that reminds me of Contra mixed in with a bit of Star Fox. There are 3 different characters to swap on the fly, with their own different firing speed, damage, and a special ability. The game can be finished in about an hour or so, depending on how good you are at rail shooters.
It's a simple but fun shooting gallery that's worth it, provided you play with mouse and keyboard (more about this later, DO NOT play with a controller) ----- Plays like a simplified Sin and Punishment (n64). You auto run, move left and right, jump, and dodge roll. The path through levels never turns or anything, each one is a straight line with obstacles and dudes in your way. You have 3 characters you swap between in real time, but just use the dinosaur, unless you have a lot of flying guys clustered together. Then use the cat. Use fox if the other two die. The music for every level seems to be a re-arrangement of the title song, which i'm personally kind of disappointed by. Overall, it's fun to run forward and blast dudes that pop up on screen, while the voice-acted banter goes on. --- That's the good part of the review. The rest is me complaining. As these get addressed i'll yank these out. 1) I got soft locked on the level select screen because i hit the pause button to try and skip a dialogue cutscene i'd seen before (on a previous playthrough that i lost the save file to, which has since been patched). So, i had to restart, again, and cautiously let every cutscene from then on play out so that i could at least see the end of the game without it happening again. 2) The gamepad controls are a complete disaster, unfortunately. I have my doubts anyone managed to beat it on controller in testing. For most of the boss fights you're constantly leading your slow projectile shots to hit them as the boss weaves left and right. This is trivial on mouse. The two methods of cursor movement on controller are dreadfully inaccurate. The better of the two (recently improved) is "Disable Recentering" with the sensitivity set to 0. But even then the dead zones are such that it's still very difficult to actually point the gun at anything. This WOULD be okay, because the game has fairly generous auto aim. But it's not, because the auto aim MISSES the bosses constantly! It works well enough on stationary enemies, but as mentioned, you have to lead your shots, and the auto aim doesn't do this, and because it auto aims you actually CAN'T lead your shots at all! So all you can do is wait for the moment a boss reverses their direction, and shoot ONE shot, THEN, to hit them on controller. It's wild. I really hope some fix for this shows up, because it would have been a fun little romp to play on the couch. oh, and 3) the gamepad rebinds reset themselves, halfway, sort of, when you leave the menu and go back. And 'throw' is always bound to left trigger, no matter what you put there, or where you move it to.
Saturday Morning Cartoon run-and-gun with MegaFox and Friends!
This game is really cool! It is very clearly inspired by Nintendo's franchise Star Fox but still being unique. Positive: + Gameplay 3 different shooting speed and power and special abilities (slowdown, explosions and Healing) + Levels: Different hazard in each level, including falling vines, mine carts, breaking tanks etc. + Characters: + Lars Deon and Kit are the main protagonists and the playable characters. They each have their own personality and design along with their unique gameplay which I describe earlier. + The main antigonist is also pretty cool, very inspired by Star Fox's Andross. Him being a human makes it unique and it's "lore" seems pretty cool even tho I didn't understand everything xD + The other characters such as the bosses or the Captain (the protagonists' boss) are a bit more forgettable but they all have actual voice lines which is nice. My favorite character out of all of those as to be Elaine. + Optimisation: It might be because of it's simplistic graphics and not overloaded area but the game runs extremely well on my PC, ranging from 1500 to 350 fps at all times. + The "extras" menu: It has a "hard mode" and 6 challenge levels which are very fun to play, endless with a score counter, making very replayable. Negative : - The challenge level "Radical Dino" is very hard, by far the hardest to get the medal. - The "Dodge" input felt unresponsive at times. Very annoying, especially when tryharding the Radical Dino challenge. - The "options" menu: - The remapping resets every time the game is fully closed and re-opened - No specific graphics setting, only High, Normal, Low. I wish we had options to set the resolution, framerate, fullscreen or windowed mode (currently it has only a "bordered windowed" mode) etc. Overall far from perfect, but considering it is a 3D game made by one person only I can't criticise it too much. I'm really looking forward to a sequel! Final note: 17/20 Go play it! 😀
Got a copy from the dev because he is a really cool dude :3 Now that that's out of the way been following Randy's work for a bit now and he just keeps improving on his craft! This entry is like getting to experence a new Rail Shooter with all the love for the great. Iv said it before. But you can feel the Influences of Starfox and Megaman while playing this and there just so much legit passion behind any of these projects. The banter kept leaving me smileing and I was looking forward to every boss encounter ^^ When it comes to Content you get base story, Think megaman campaign length, with voice acting and lots of lore for fans of the prior game :3. Im happy there was extra modes afterwards. Hard mode to replay the story mode with and bonus challenges that have custom models and stages with plans for a Roguelite mode in the future! GL on the Radical Dino challenge ;3 IN short. I strongly suggest this for fans of the genre and look forward to updates and any other projects! Like before this has been a RAD time!
A wonderful game that tests your reflexes, features fun characters, a interesting plot, and excellent voice acting + humorous dialogue among the cast and the enemies. Unit Down Charge is a game that fans of a certain space faring fox and other on-rails shooters can jump right in and are guaranteed to enjoy. The low poly graphics and character designs are charming, with the simulations making for a experience that will help hone your shooting & aiming skills the more you play. I highly recommend giving this great game a go:)
