really fun little game, with some of the most refined bullet hell gameplay this dev has ever put out. really nice boss fights.
Escape from Terror City is a very neat and nicely composed game with cool visuals and 3D characters. It plays a bit like a retro shooting gallery style game which interestingly divides the game into "screens" that the player can traverse between. I enjoy seeing how the developer used this mechanic to direct the action which can get hectic at times! There is a very welcome level select feature for completed levels. I'm looking forward to playing some more!
Quick Score: 3/5 Notes: The game started off pretty good. Then it started to get a bit scuffed. Then it got really bad. Then it got so bad it started to be kind of good again for comedic reasons. The normal playthrough is an absolute joke and you could easily clear the whole game without ever dying. The hard playthrough is quite substantionally harder and the very final stage specifically is an absolute nightmare. I 100% the game in 2.3 hours, and probably almost 1 full hour of that was on the very final section of the last stage on hard mode. The biggest issues with the game, and they are BIG, would be the following. -There are multiple enemies and even full blown boss fights that you can just kill around the corner without them ever even being able to shoot you -The camera can be incredibly ass at times, and it just so happens it is at its absolute worst on the very final boss fight -The game has some weird ♥♥♥♥ happen sometimes with your cursor where in the middle of some fights, the fps will dip, and your cursor sensitivity will spike erratically making it very difficult to control. This could maybe just be a mouse issue, never tried the game on controller. -Some bullet patterns are incredibly difficult to understand due to the camera perspective. Hard to get a grasp on exactly where the bullets are in 3d space and how to navigate through them -The options menu and layout is hideous, make sure you set your resolution settings, even if you are on full screen, otherwise the game defaults to a comically low resolution that looks terrible. Overall though, despite all the glaring problems, I would say it was a relatively fun, and a pretty unique gameplay experience at least from anything I have ever played. Would suggest giving it a try if you can ever catch it on decent sale, just go in expecting a ♥♥♥♥ show.
This is far and away my favorite of the Renegade Sector games so far. Solid visuals, fun fights, and good encounter design! It's worth checking out.
In ‘Escape from Terror City’, you take control of a purple-haired hero on a quest to destroy a jamming signal and save the galaxy from the ruthless Argus Empire. Gameplay takes the form of a 3D run and gun shooter reminiscent of Namco’s Time Crisis but played from a third person perspective, without a light-gun. It’s not quite ‘on-rails’, but movement is limited. Your character can move around each area, in a strafe-like pattern, with only a jump to avoid enemy bullets, which are satisfyingly chunky! At the same time, you control your crosshair to direct your own weapon. Once you defeat a wave of enemies, you move forward to the next area, occasionally, getting to choose from branching pathways. Featuring a colour palette of pinks and purples, the low polygon art-style perfectly captures the PS1 and Sega Saturn era, with their jittery, wobbly textures. Like the arcade coin-ops that inspired it, the game is short, and the five levels can be completed in one or two sittings, although there’s a hard mode for those that want a challenge. The story is there to add context, but takes a backseat to the action – which is what you want for a game like this. Escape from Terror City is a lovingly crafted slice of nostalgia well worth a look!
I adore the vibe, but this game's camera system could end a marriage.
The game is challenging but not unfair. Checkpoints are placed frequently enough. Difficult areas often have a separate path you can find (I found one secret path, too). Just beat normal mode but there's definitely replayability with alternate paths and Hard Mode. + Love the combo of bullet hell and rail shooter - Enemies can sometimes fire rockets just after dying which feels bad man + All the new bosses and minibosses makes each level feel fresh + Train level was awesome - Train level was also way too short. Needs more train level. Fun arcade-style game to play on work breaks. Good stuff from the dev.
This is just an initial impressions review, so I may update later. The game has a weird, clunky aesthetic that I'm into. There's good enemy variety, weapons, different levels, etc. to hold one's interest for at least a little while. It does feel a bit unfinished. The camera skips around and the aiming is clunky in ways that feels less like a feature of the aesthetic and more of an issue with the game itself. The controls menu is also bizarrely different from anything else in the game, and it looks like an out-of-focus screenshot of a different game's control UI. It's not a big deal, but it goes with the game feeling unpolished. If you look at the game pictures, you'll understand the aesthetic and gameplay pretty clearly, I think. If that looks like a fun distraction to you, I recommend checking it out. So far, I'm enjoying it, and I will be finishing the game as soon as I can take another break from work.
Hot Dam is this game fun! It reminds me of contra or metal slug, but in a 3d world environment. Sure it may not have as much polish as a shoe from the 18th century, but there wasnt any glaring flaws. I had the camera clip in to a wall while playing when i got to close the the back wall of a certian part of a map, only ran in to it once, and when i did, i just moved fowards a little bit and i was back to seeing the whole game. The level design is amazing, and what i mean by this is, every level has a choice for its path, theres a fork where you can choose where to go, you will get some unique mini boss's then it will branch back with the other path before the final boss of the level. I wish the game had some gun power up's. Its just the one gun through out the 4 levels which dose get boring, but the amount if enemies makes up for it. All their move sets even change once you go on hard difficulty. Overall took 1h to beat the game on normal with 6 deaths, working on hard mode right now but i dont think it will be such a easy feat as normal was. Id highly recommend this to anyone who knows not to go in expecting perfection from a small studio, you will greatly enjoy this game!
-What could have been a nice little gem. I love discovering games it's one of my favorite things to do in gaming and it's a damn good feeling when you feel like you have found a gem hidden deep in the fields. Escape from terror city initially started out as that game but quickly dwindled once its numerous bugs and horrendous camera came into play. Underneath the numerous issues this game has lies a really awesome game that I wish I could recommend to people but sadly can’t. - What is Escape from terror city? To begin, Escape from terror city is a run’n’gun game that feels very similar to the base levels from contra. You play in a 3rd person point of view where you move your character from section to section shooting down enemies. With Chunky 3D graphics in similarity to megaman legends I love the look of the game and WANTED to love the game itself. It's very fast past, high action and a very short game that will run you about 40 minutes. - So what are my issues? The core gameplay loop is honestly very fun and takes you back to a more simpler time in gaming but that is honestly about it. To begin, there are an insane amount of bugs ranging from funny to literally game breaking. To explain , the camera is horrendous making you move in very tight spots where you sometimes will have the wall blocking your whole view. This is bad due to the fact you are constantly having to move and jump around to dodge bullets so many times you will be thrown off or quite literally will throw yourself off the map and die. Furthermore, there are times when you clip through the level resulting in game overs throwing you back to the checkpoint. In addition, there were moments where the enemies or bosses would bug out and would just sit there shooting nothing at you. The sad part is it doesn’t stop there, During a boss fight what do you do? Focus a lot so you don’t get it and what do you do when you beat a boss? Let out a sigh of relief and relax yourself. Well you cannot do that in this game because you have no invincibility during bosses so if you clutch out a boss with 1HP left and you beat the boss while it was shooting a bullet at you there is a chance you can literally get hit and still die. This actually happened to me but I didn’t even get a game over or anything my game was softlocked forcing me to restart the whole game. To top it off once you finish the game you unlock a hard mode which adds EVEN more issues to the game ranging from terrible FPS drops since enemies throw more at you and even more mid boss fights where bosses bug out and don’t even hit you. Sometimes you don’t even have to worry if a boss bugs out because there are multiple bosses where you can literally stand in a spot and not get hit at all lol. To top off this segment there are sensitivity issues with the mouse where the game will completely make your mouse fling around during certain attacks enemies use which is extremely annoying. - Bummer It's a bummer because my initial impressions were good but it quickly fell apart for me and I wanted to beat this game again on hard initially. But after all the issues and annoyances I couldn’t bring myself to deal with doing that task as it would bump the meter of annoyances up to 100%. I would say MAYBE give this game a go on a deep deep sale for a few bucks but otherwise I cannot recommend this game. It has the love and aesthetics behind it but none of the polish.
