It has the makings of a good horror game but this 'free version' demo at least is largely unplayable. The first scene where you wake up, the controls locked. I couldn't move. I had to kill the game via Task Manager to close it. It worked the second time until you crash the car. Following the crash cinematics and appearing in a new building for a moment, I am teleported back to the road and controls are locked again. Restarted the game twice but wasn't able to move at all at the same spot, again quitting via Task Manager. Other things of note: * The textures were also decent quality in some areas and extremely low in others and it was very obvious. (e.g chairs, bed linen, rags, grass especially) it looks like you have manually reduced the quality of each texture, some are reduced way too far, assuming this was an optimisation choice? * The startup screens had a logo I was unfamiliar with, which I assumed was the developer logo? unless you are Xbox or Playstation you should have text telling the player who developed it not just a logo, as an indie studio you want people to know your name at least. * The jump cuts to Jenny and the quick-vision cinematics feel very out of place, the story is difficult to follow as it gets thrown at you like a truck in the first 2 minutes, it left me feeling very confused. * Flashlight is visible during the phone call scene, you will need to add logic to disable it the moment the scene starts. * Default sound mixing is a little off, music/sfx are louder than voices, some of the voice acting is decent like Jenny, although the main character seems to be a Microsoft voice? * Footstep SFX are done well. * The game run well on my PC, smooth FPS. * Opening scene camera work and fades to black in the bedroom felt a little awkward. * Whilst I was impressed by the car mechanics, I'm not sure it's needed. It doesn't add a great deal of value to the experience, it would be a great way however to use Sequencer (UE5) to create some cinematics which allows some story to be told from within the car, especially since you have friends in the car with you at a point. * In the beginning you use waypoint marker system, in the second part of the game (post-car crash) you use objective text at the top right of the screen, I would stick with objective text, using waypoints removes a sense of exploration and freedom. * You could reduce the demo timer widget in size and move it to a corner perhaps? ruins some immersion. * Movement control mappings are made visible on screen first couple minutes very briefly, I'd say it's redundant for a PC game, what wasn't mentioned was how to crouch, how to interact, how to run, all of which you can do from game start. I'd introduce each one as they become necessary ** e.g Being chase = Show the 'press key to run' on screen or obstacle in the way 'show key to crouch' on screen, if there is an interactive object 'press key to interact' etc. (the little white triangle for the car key confused me) * While the music is decent, there are no environmental sounds, wind? birds? etc, this would do a lot to build atmosphere, also why is there a ghost jumpscare in the first 5 minutes? we barely know the story and we already know what the threat looks and sounds like = fear reduced. * Water/mud footstep SFX might need some work, they are very hard hitting compared to walking on wood or grass. * Watching my gameplay back I noticed the text 'Vault Games' on the rock as the priest was dragging me away, I would remove it, add it to the title screen at game startup perhaps with your logo? using the game world itself isn't a great idea for immersion which is everything for a game like this. * Animations are mostly pretty clean, friends getting into the car are a little awkward. This is my captured gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNNZ1rpU6KY

After getting in the car and completing the cut scene at the end, the game gets stuck. This issue is fixed in the full paid version. But with that being said, there are still bugs and unwanted game settings that make game uncomfortable/unplayable after that. I disagree with smooth camera movement, and blurry camera movements. Otherwise, game runs fairly well, textures, sounds, and other settings feel ok.
Not optimized, far too loud and graphics gives headache. Would be better to have this updated.
"Unholy Village Free Version" is a low key asset flip, a bunch of other people's assets assembled badly to make a basic game, typically this kind of thing is done by amateur developers without sufficient budget, talent and/or staff to do the job of game development professionally. It's then quickly rushed into Steam Direct. And, unsurprisingly, this never results in a product with any quality, interest, or value for gamers. This is one of literally thousands of first person horror adventure asset flips infesting Steam, notable only because it was a failed paid product, and is considerably worse than most of the other first person horror asset flip adventures on Steam. As always the price tag on an asset flip is a direct attempt from either shady or talentless developers to get YOUR money for someone else's game assets, and this is never okay. So, the game might look better than you'd expect from an amateur project, but this is because it's partially or completely made up of stock assets, "borrowed" from asset stores and free asset websites. Very little in this game is truly the creation of the "developer", it's just a bunch of rearranged assets. While there's no up front price for this asset flip, the other problem with asset flips is that when developers aren't capable of doing their job and creating high quality assets, it's also true they can't do any of the rest of the job of a game developer either. That's definitely true for "Unholy Village Free Version". Now on to pricing and value for gamers. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $8 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 4 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? What's the verdict? Nope. There's no up front cost here, but I still feel like I got ripped off, and I didn't even spend any money. That's how bad this is.
Amicalement, Le pasteur .
