The publisher decided to forcefully add their own launcher to an old classic (under the guise of an update) (ads, data collection—everything we love). Until the launcher is removed from the game, the review will remain negative. I encourage all concerned players to join in. We don't have the power to send an "effective" manager to do anything useful, but reviews and future purchases of games from this publisher depend on us.
Probably the weakest of UFO games and mediocre. I don't recommend this one, but the series overall has good entries, so check out other titles.
I would say out of all three of this series this one is the best one. Graphically today it is poor but good storyline.
Stops being a challenge after you get a reliable source of AP bullets and the best assault rifles. Still pretty fun though.
UFO: Aftershock (Aftershock) is the second game in a "UFO Trilogy" by Alter Interactive. Aftershock continues one of the story paths available to the player from the first game, Aftermath. First and foremost, Aftershock is a budget game from the early 2000s and it definitely shows today. I played this game way too much as a kid with Aftermath one of my favourite childhood games so when Aftershock came along I was super excited. Aftershock forewent the gritty and realistic style visuals of Aftermath, embracing a nearly cartoon visual style that at first can be jarring but it does grow on you. The game follows a campaign of trying to re-take a crippled Earth, first from monsters and the remnants of the aliens who attacked so many years but from other humans who are extremists and referred affectionately as "Cultists". There are three other human factions, 'normal' humans who hate any one else including their own whom they outcast; these include cyborgs which as the name suggest are a group of male outcasts who replace organic parts of their bodies with cybernetics and lastly, psionics who are female outcasts who have an affinity for psionic abilities awaken by the alien experiment that devasted the world. With this, the game has a simple diplomacy system that largely revolves around doing missions in sections of the globe held by one of the three "friendly" human factions and eventually gaining their trust to join your new Earth government. As you get better relations, you can recruit higher level troops from these factions but maxing out at level 6, they aren't much to hold out for. The game is broken down in global strategic and tactical modes. The strategic mode involves capturing sectors and building bases to research and build better equipment. With each sector, you have three materials to manage that are also tied to each "friendly" faction. There is low tech, high tech and alien tech which are found in normal human, cyborg and psionic regions respectfully. Tactical mode is where you will spend the majority of your time. The game features a simultaneous action system where each action takes a set amount of time with everyone, your own troops, enemies and friendly troops acting at the same time. The gameplay is a step up compared to Aftermath with some great sound effects and smoother animations (honestly, the sound a round impacting a target is supberb) but the controls soon feel clunky even once you master the keyboard shortcuts. The biggest annoyance is even if you were to position your troops in a line, if you tell them all to move, the game automatically clumps them back up together. The tactics you need for tactical are quite simple as the AI is even more simple, set up a firing line with heavy hitting, long range weapons and send your most nimble soldier to find the enemy and kite them back into firing range. Rince and repeat. One element of the tactical gameplay that can help shift things up are the abilities of cyborgs and psionics. Whilst normal human troops are an excellent middle ground, they don't necessarily excel compared to their outcast brethren. Cyborgs with the right training and augments are downright unstoppable. Psionics and their ability to detect enemies telepathically and boost the capabilities of friends or degrade enemy capabilities ensure you will always have at least one psionic "sniper/leader". The problem sadly is the lead time to research and manufacture equipment for Cyborgs and Psionics before they become useful. However, once available, the most powerful squads will likely be 6 Cyborgs and 1 Psionic. Late-game additions such as shields and the ability to have three specialisations can lead to some very nasty training builds for regular humans but there is something oddly satisfying about Cyborgs wielding machine guns and miniguns just destroying everything at range! This then leads into the stagnation of the gameplay loops. The campaign is basically divided into three parts. By the end of the second part you have likely conquered the entire world except for some pesky Cultist territories that will spring up like weeds elsewhere and you will be enduring attacks from a new new enemy (sic). The strangest part about this new new enemy is that they have one unit that is impervious to nearly all damage and unless you are carrying Psionic and Plasma weapons you won't be able to harm them... Which is kind of hard so you have to kite this enemy away and hope that you can kill the rest of the enemies and win that way. Unless there are two... Ultimately, the game eventually ends but it can be quite a slog. In all honesty, the story should have ended after the first space mission and it still would have been satisfying. Aftershock is a diamond in the rough that can still be fun and it was a nice trip down memory lane replaying it these last few weeks.
