A nice, romantic visual novel which also features some match-3 mini-games :) This game - which has also a lovely soundtrack that I proudly own, made up by 12 tracks composed by Antonio Lorenzo Carino in a jazz/ambient style - focuses on Emma, an English girl who will embark to Spain, she's like an expert of informatics xD and well, she will be torn among her job, the surprises she will find in her cruise ship and of course all that she left in London, basically.. she'll have to choose thanks to you which route to take, mostly romantic but also.. can we say "bad"? :) There are three different endings, overall ^^ I also liked the graphics a lot, they're not exceptional maybe but both the realistic backgrounds and the Japanese-like character sprites are definitely enjoyable :) I really found no problems at all both with the backgrounds, the characters and the two mixing together - in my opinion everything's completely ok, maybe the characters could have been drawn better but really, nice graphics ;) There are no bugs at all and the whole game has a nice save/load feature, runs well for what concerns auto, skip and other functions and has also some videos in-between the reading system :) I liked a lot anyways the character development, although the game won't take you more than 3 hours to read through it all due also to the few endings (but it's ok as it is in my opinion, not every visual novel must have 20 different endings to be beautiful). So, it's mostly a kinetic one since there won't be that many options to choose from but anyways, it's a nice blend and it can be enjoyed to read even on other supports apart from the PC in my view. There's also lots of humour and well, the characters are relatable and I liked the fact that everything takes place in an European environment :) It's clearly indie-made, for what concerns especially the basic/minimalistic quality of the menus and the windows and a sad lack of a gallery section, but yeah, it's not that negative all in all. We're not talking about the best visual novel ever seen of course, but there are no sufficient elements in my opinion to rate it negatively. For what concerns graphics, music, plot and character development I really think you won't be disappointed, and even if the preferences section isn't extremely polished you won't find yourself stuck or in some annoying situation in which you're bound to read for 30 minutes stupid things or whatever else xD Plus, I found the mini-game idea quite nice, of course it's not greatly developed but it's a very interesting idea, and the videos of course too :) So, maybe not for its full price, but all in all this one's a very nice romantic visual novel, that focuses more on graphics, music and story rather than on endings, choices or suspance. If you're into these novels or generally short but entertaining realistic and romantic visual novels, this one's definitely a great choice to get :)
TL;DR: True Lover's Knot is a short slice-of-life about being treated to a cruise by your best pal and finding love (or not) along the way. The premise and writing were okay, but the repeated non skippable match 3/4/5 game jars you out of the story. Getting achievements requires rolling back to an earlier build, which has broken images for controls and looks awful. I can't recommend buying this when there's several free VN's with better writing, better art, and more features. If you really love match 3/4/5 games and don't mind them repeatedly inturrupting a story, then I would change to "cautiously recommending". Step into the shoes of Emma, a London tech girl who is being treated to a cruise by her best pal Lucas. Aboard the ship you will have a second chance at love with your college ex Scott and be romanced by cruise guest Santi. PROS The premise and delivery of the love story on vacation was good. The writing style has improved over some earlier VN's. The characters are varied, and (mostly) likeable. The character art is nice, and some characters do change clothing during the story. There is a (skippable) local tour you can take in 2 port cities, which gives you local facts on 2 towns you visit during the cruise. The soundtrack music is good, and fits the scenes well. NEUTRAL Achievements do not trigger unless you install the old version, available by right clicking the title in your steam library, then selecting properties, then "oldversion". The controls are broken images, so navigation will be difficult. It does accept saved games from the current version, so you can read most of the story right up to the final choice point, then switch to the old version for achievements. The game isn't voiced, but there is a point in the game where the 2 male love interests leave you voicemail messages. That's it. There isn't much character development as the cruise takes place over a week. The video cut scenes are skippable. You're not able to take screenshots, but the dev posted a workaround, here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/416630/discussions/0/492378806374551762/ CONS There's no CG gallery. The characters have only 1 static pose, which can look a bit out of place in some situations. There are only 2 love interests, and both are male. Personally I found Santi repulsive after
that disgusting pick up line.
I'm also not a fan of Insta!Love between characters. That leaves only Scott, who I did like. Not liking 1 of the 2 love interests made the game even shorter then expected for me. The story is really short, and the attempts to hide this with one sentence per page just means sore wrists from the repeated clicking. Your choices don't affect the story until the end, where you choose your partner (or not). Once you pick a love interest, the endings are rushed and not detailed very well. There's a few quick sentences of wrap up and that's it. The non skippable match 3/4/5 mini game was okay for the first few times, but when it keep repeating over and over it became annoying. It stopped being a fun break and became a chore. It also really jars you out of the story, and the constant interruption did impact my enjoyment of the story. If it wasn't for the mini game, I might have read the story again. With the mini game not being skippable, I uninstalled as soon as I got all 4 achievements. There really needs to be a skip button for those who don't enjoy match 3 games, or for those who prefer to be immersed in the story. The match 3/4/5 mini game has no effect on story. It's not skippable and although it's not particularly hard, you must beat the game to continue reading. I think it would have been better if your success at the mini game was relevant to the story - perhaps by giving Emma extra money to buy clothes, or adding new dialogue options later on. TRADING CARDS / BADGES Badges are nautical themed, and look nice. Five emotes are summer beachy themed, done in blue and white. Three backgrounds are characters on a black background. All are pretty inexpensive. VALUE FOR THE MONEY I found True Lover's Knot to be a Terrible Value. I'm a slow reader, but $7 USD for about 2 hours of reading and repeated interruptions to play non skippable match-3/4/5 mini game, with no replay value is pretty overpriced to me. If the VN was $2 and the match 3 was skippable, this review would be positive. As it is, I really can't recommend TLN to anyone.
This game has a lot of selling points that would ordinarily be a hit with me - Romantic story, anime-inspired characters, photo-realism, exotic/luxurious setting, etc etc. That's why I bought the game, after all. But while a lot of my personal box checks are all on deck, the execution has completely missed the boat. I get that it's the job of the developers to try and sell the game, but reading the description here on the store page after having played the game will make the passengers of this voyage feel like they've been shanghaied. Let me break down the brochure for you: -“True Lover’s Knot” follows the story of Emma, a London-based tech genius The story is from Emma's first person view, and as such, you don't see her. So in other words, she's a self-insert. Bonus points if you're British and also a girl. -as she and her best friend, Lucas, The obligatory cardboard cutout best friend character -take to the high seas in a luxurious cruise "Take to Google images for high-res photos that aren't to scale with the drawings because drawing backgrounds is hard and takes time." - a fun “match 3” game element that will truly delight anyone Literally just match 3 with no twists. Even worse, it comes up more than once. It exists almost solely to pad out the game's length with...something. Anything. - This “romantic comedy” Visual Novel will truly delight its readers This wafer-thin wish fulfillment piece will truly delight the author. - An interesting and highly entertaining storyline The most entertaining thing about my experience with this game was writing this review. BUT WILL IT TRULY DELIGHT? - A fun and addictive match-3 mini game. Take note of the fact that the match 3 game came up twice. - Beautiful, high-end anime characters I mean, sure. Fair point. But what do they mean by "high-end"? - Funny and light hearted dialogue Dialogue that sounded better in the writer's head, but often reeks like bilge water. - Witty romantic comedy in the style of classics like “Notting Hill”, “Sweet Home Alabama” & “Made of Honor” "Here's a list of movies that the creator likes" - Light and pleasant feel and ambiance resembling animes like “Marmalade Boy”, “Cardcaptor Sakura”, “Whisper of the Heart” & “The Cat Returns”. "Here's a list of anime/manga that the creator likes" - Groovy jazz, lounge, reggae and RnB soundtrack Again, on paper, most of this is up my alley. But in practice, it's down below the poop deck. Overall, maybe I shouldn't come down so harshly on someone who's so clumsily honest and upfront about what they want from the world while also at least having enough tenacity to go out and produce a completed token of those desires, but this game simply does not have its sea legs, and should not have seen a $6.99 Steam release. This is the kind of game you release online for free with the intent of receiving constructive criticism. My advice to the maker(s): take the L and learn up. Everyone else: abandon ship.
This Visual Novel game is not good. I don´t recomment it. story is very short. graphic is not really good. the game has bugs. price is much to high for this short game. all achievements work.
True lover's knot suffers from too many impeding problems for me to consider giving it a positive review. I will not speak of the story, it is what it is and beside the fact it's terribly cliché, there is nothing much to say to it. Some people won't like it, some will like it, that's really about taste. Current problems: - Impossible to skip the "mini games". Those are some sort of low quality match 3+ and beside the fact that you can drag the files anywhere you want, you can be stuck and need to reset and there is one every 2mn of text just for the purpose of stretching the game time. - Achievements are currently bugged/ - Kinetic story, the choices you're making have absolutely no importance, as you may skip some scene, but won't for some others. - The 3 routes only split at the end and the end consists in 3 lines for each. I don't recommend this game for those problems unless you really want to play a match 3 sort of game with a little story around it, but I'm pretty sure you can find something better with mini games actually working properly.
