TripTrip
Don't let the retro visuals fool you, TripTrip is an addictive, challenging and fresh color co-ordination take on the auto-scrolling runner. Dodging obstacles and platforms was painful enough in even the most challenging auto-runner games, now throw in a constantly shifting color-match system and you've got something that will really melt your brain.
A Color-Coded Runner
TripTrip starts off simple enough; you're a steadily rolling little ball charging through a vertically scrolling gauntlet of roadblocks, pitfalls and other obstacles to dodge and roll through. It isn't long before the floor beneath you begins shifting colors, deadly colors that end your round little life if you happen to touch them while not matching their appearance. It eases you in nice and slow at the start. Levels begin teaching the player to alternate between a simple two colors, and steadily introduces you to new colors with enough room to let them learn which color is co-ordinated to which button well enough. It isn't long before TripTrip feels like some kind of hybrid of runner and rhythm game. Topping each set of themed stages is one exhilarating and creative boss battle. These are always a nice change of pace from the typical runner gameplay with some really well thought out gimmicks and plenty of crazy attack patterns to learn and dodge. They complete the retro flow of TripTrip, making it feel like a legit full NES title, complete with a constantly skill-pushing difficulty curve, a classic and memorable soundtrack, and some of the craziest boss battles you'll see in the auto-runner genre.
Visuals/Sound
It looks just like an NES title from your childhood past, and there really isn't a whole lot going on visually outside of your little rolling marble and the grey tiled tracks that lead it on with their shifting colors of Green, Red, Blue, and Yellow. It also sounds just like an NES game and the chiptune soundtrack here in TripTrip is the real deal when it comes to the games' presentation. Heavy, gritty, energizing chiptunes are what any good retro game should have if it's going for authenticity, and TripTrip does not fail in that department.
Final Thought
There isn't a whole lot to say about TripTrip, you get what you see and pay for and it's all even more solid than you would expect with a simple but effective formula that's engaging and a difficulty curve that keeps you consistently on the edge of your seat. Getting into the flow of the colors and finding that Zen zone-out mode where it all just sort of clicks and the color presses come naturally. Super recommended for score-chasers and retro/arcade enthusiasts. TripTrip is an "autoscrolling, color-matching action game." It quite a good game. You need to change the colour of the ball to the colour of the tiles it's rolling on or you loose health. There is also pickups and obstacles you need to dodge or jump. There are check points where your game is saved and the game is over when you run out of lives. I played the tutorial first. There is two of them, basic and advanced but after each one the game crashed to windows. So I then played some of the levels to make sure it didn't have the same problem and mess up a game. Fortunately it didn't and it played through fine. I ended up playing it a few levels past the first Boss monster. It's kind of a memory game as well in that you need to remember what keys the five colours are mapped to, and yes you can re-map them if you don't like the layout. I assume it gets a lot harder as you progress so grab those extra life pick-ups whenever you can. Watch the video to get an idea of the game play. If you enjoyed the challenge of older retro games, then you will enjoy this game. Even on Easy mode you should expect some challenge to get through later worlds, but all worlds are doable with a little patience and persistence. On Easy mode you can make through the all of the worlds in a few hours, but if you want to find all of the secrets you will have to get good at the harder difficulties. The soundtrack is great and is enjoyable to listen to as you try and make your way through the more difficult worlds. There are also a lot of hidden challenges and modes to the game you can unlock if you enjoy completing a game. All in all TripTrip is fun and challenging game with lots of hidden secrets if you’re looking for a hard and challenging platformer then TripTrip is the right game for you.
Fun yet challenging reflex-based scroller, with cute retro graphics and cool music. I think it would be easier to play with an Xbox controller where the 4 buttons are colored accordingly, instead of frantically hitting Q/W/E/R on the keyboard trying to find the right color ;)
Fun game! The music is awesome and it has a retro feel. It's very challenging to me, I can't imagine playing past easy difficulty.
This is a very fun (and very challenging) retro game with a fantastic soundtrack! The idea is very simple to pickup and the difficulty picks up at a nice rate, ultimately becoming very difficult. The different difficulty levels are a nice touch too, as they change the game on a mechanical level rather than just speeding things up.
Although I'm only on World 5 so far, I must say I really enjoy this game. Despite the simple controls, the game has managed to offer gradually more involved challenges. The game feels familiar due to its controls being similar to rhythm games, and yet manages to feel fresh since its mechanics and the timing are related to the level design, rather than music design. Speaking of music, the music for this game is intoxicating and helps you get in the zone. All the bosses I've encountered so far feel unique and interesting in their own way. While the graphics might not be top of the line, they serve the desired purpose and if you're used to old-school games, you will quickly forget about them. Considering the price, I would definitely recommend buying this game and pop in to spend a few hours on it, it should definitely keep you entertained.
Under the unassuming but comely visuals is an exciting, fast paced game that feels like its creators have a true understanding of what makes a game tick. There is an abundance of creativity in the level design within the purposeful restrictions of the gameplay itself. And the soundtrack is worth the price of admission alone.
This is a great game, though it can be pretty challenging if you don't have nimble fingers. I'm still working through the game, but have fun every time I pick it up. The boss battles are the best part by far, though I wish there were a "boss battles only" mode for people who get stuck on some of the levels (I guess that's what easy difficulty is for). Music is also great, highly recommend picking up the sound track.
great vibe. very cool and unique bosses. very difficult!
