Trials of the Gauntlet is a somewhat clunky platformer but I like the creativity, both in terms of mechanics and the story. This subpar experience is also only 1 hour long. It just seems like the developers had good idea but lacked the experience. Saying all that, the game has some potential. The most notable feature of the game is a grappling hand which makes the platforming gameplay more dynamic. Your metal arm also has an electric power which can be used to interact with enemies and the environment. I thought that animation and backgrounds were decent. However, visuals are not very polished and the controls can be difficult to tolerate. Not to mention countless glitches or problems with hitboxes. I should note that music sounds familiar so I assume it was not made for the game. The soundtrack also does not fit the tone of the story and the environment. In general, I think that concept was interesting but the quality of gameplay just isn't there. For the most part, I was just fighting the controls for an hour.
Pros:
+ fun mechanics + interesting story concept + has some variety + animation and backgrounds are okay
Cons:
- clunky controls - some visual issues - frequent bugs - almost no settings - short Final Thoughts 5/10 I think the game can be decent with some updates. If it was a little longer maybe I would recommend it. The combination of short length and subpar experience just makes it hard to enjoy. Perhaps you should add it to the wishlist and see if it developers care enough to improve it. Otherwise, you have to play it with a very forgiving attitude. Video review (including score): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQ1rB4NZoJU Trials of the Gauntlet is a game that originated as a midterm project for a group of students at Full Sail University. Unfortunately, while the effort was there, the end result is just a clunky mess.
Pros:
Decent art. The art for Trials of the Gauntlet is actually pretty nice. It perfectly captures the look one would expect from a metroidvania game. A couple of the sprites look out of place, but it was nicely done overall.
Cons:
Frustrating controls. The whole gimmick behind Trials of the Gauntlet is the grapple mechanic and what it adds to the game's platforming. Unfortunately this mechanic is just frustrating to use. It made the platforming a pain to get through and was just uncooperative most of the time. Boring sound design. This is a very quiet game, with rather subpar sound design. The soundtrack is hardly there and sometimes the only sound the player hears is that of an enemy moving or the player attacking. This just draws more attention to how boring the sound design is. Bad combat. The combat in the game is just bad, mostly due to a combination of how basic it is and a visual issue with the game's grappling hook. The player is oftentimes required to first hit an enemy with the electric grappling hook, which can be switched on and off at will. Unfortunately, a visual bug exists with the HUD indicator for this hook. Sometimes it would show the electric grappling hook as active when it was actually not and vice-versa. Even without that bug, the combat is just painful. The lack of feedback when hitting an enemy definitely does not help. Annoying bugs. It certainly does not help when the game's defining feature, the grappling hook, has its fair share of bugs too. I managed to clip through walls and floors several times while stumbling through the game's platforming sections. Additionally, there are these collectible notes scattered around for the player to find, but I was unable to pick up quite a few of them due to what I believe to be a bug. The notes would just remain static, with no amount of interaction allowing me to pick them up.
Overall:
While the effort is obviously there, Trials of the Gauntlet is just not a good game. The game's defining feature is painful to use, the sound design is subpar, the combat is just bad, and there are quite a few bugs that hinder the experience. As a first game for these developers, it is passable, but I would definitely not recommend it for a general audience. Trials of the Gauntlet veut bien faire, c’est indéniable !
Trials of the Gauntlet Nice Side Scrolling 2D adventure game! While I had a hard time getting this game to boot due to crashes and bugs, I hung in there and shared the details with the Developers. They listened and responded, I was able to get an updated version running and it was worth the hardship. While this is no CastleVania it surely has the right stuff to challenge and keep you intrigued to say the least. I however would love to see controller support as I really feel that this game would preform better and appeal to a wider crowd. But all in all, I give the game a thumbs up. Thank you Pat for listening and developing, keep it coming!

Jogo fodaaaaaa, me lembra muito cuphead, porque é rapido, é bom, RECOMENDO <3
Pros: Old Graphics Good Plot Cons: Mediocre Soundtrack
I like the idea behind this platformer (you have 2 hooks, one of them being electrified and lets you power things and stun enemies) but the execution is sadly just not good. Also I swear the last boss battle somehow almost takes more time than the rest of the game combined which is weird.
Achievements doesnt work. Game got simple controls and ok story but still not worth it. Short game 2 bosses and that is all.
