Great Game xD
I check out if this game is worth your time and money. Um... Well in short. No. It feels just like a cash grab game. No offense to the creator if he/she poured their heart into it. It feels like somebody very inexperienced learned a few things on how to make a game and put out their first attempt. This should be on Gamejolt for free, not on Steam for money. My video below is me doing a review and showing you exactly what you're getting out of it. https://youtu.be/spLtb-f2N0Y
I had high hopes for this but unfortunately, this game is even less fun than MY BONES. I tell you why in short fashion: - same boring music the entire time. - random sound effects off bad quality ( wich dont even make any sense ), some of them are even cut-off - Terrible level design - GAME IS WAY TO DARK! A game is not scary when it's only dark! - some scipts are not working ( light on/off ) ??? what was that supposed to do?? - Story is boring and nothing new to horror games. - Minimal effort shown - No Music in Main menu, no custom sound effects, no custom loading screens. NOT EVEN CREDITS. What did it take to make this game? 3 Hours?? - You are able to walk outside the areas into the no man's land. Never heard of invisible walls? TRY to make something unique at least. Sorry, but this is just not good. I really wanted to like it, but I can't. Hopefully the developer learns of this. It can only get better from now on. Cheers
Seeing the trailer was enough to tell me that The Spirit Underneath was bad. Plot is dull and the gameplay duller. Players progress through reading letters, and exploring a world of flat textiles with Assets similar to ones like Woodlands and Bunker 58. The Enemy AI is a joke, for their broken path movements and some glitching on objects. Making the entire world visibly darker, too, isn’t going to make the game any horrifying than its level design. The latter was a mess of random characters and object spawns that adds no relevance to the main plot. The music is repetitive. Sound effects appear at random, and are even cut off early at times. Overall, the game feels undeveloped, and made by an amateur who was playing around with Game Guru. There are better Horror shorts in the Steam store, or online that are free. Don’t waste your time or money on this Asset Flip.
Game Guru is the one engine I have a sick fascination with. Most developers use this engine to crap out absolutely atrocious games to sell them on any storefront they can and this game is no exception. Story: In The Spirit Underneath you play as an unnamed man who awakens in a mysterious graveyard , with no idea who he is and how he got there, as you try to piece together the story and escape hell. If you played My Bones, the story is almost an identical rip off, like I mean even the plot twist is the same. It's absolutely terrible and when you read the first note you already can easily guess how the story plays out. Even the ending of the game has an identical choose how you want to proceed with the story. Literally no effort put into the game. Graphics: Like most Game Guru games the game is filled to the brim with a bunch of asset flipped locations and items. You remember My Bones, the game I mentioned at the start of the review. Well these two games look identical, the first location is literally a fiery red graveyard that looks abysmal. There is a few moments where character models appear and they seem completely out of place and it honestly makes me laugh. There's on part in the game where you encounter killer bunnies that look like Robbie from Silent Hill 3. Audio: The audio like most of the textures is all stock. The music is constantly looping and absolute pain to listen to, The stock effects like a scary noise happening when you get too close to a certain object sounds like it was pulled straight out of a 3 AM video. Gameplay: The Spirit Underneath is basically a walking simulator where you hunt keys and unlock doors until you finish the game. It's really boring and not to mention at first you think there is going to be threats going after you because you have a HUD that displays your health and lives and you simply can't die in the game. Just like My Bones this game is also insanely short. A single run will take you less than 10 minutes and there is another ending in the game for you to check out, but even then these endings are joke endings that make literally no sense. Verdict: The Spirit Underneath is absolutely atrocious. It's not scary, really boring and not to mention absolutely horrendous. When I played My Bones I thought that was the bottom of the barrel, but The Spirit Underneath managed to dug past the trash and crawl even further down the same barrel. It's an atrocious game that is not worth a single cent from you. Final Rating: 1/10 Pros: N/A Cons: - Asset flip - Stock music makes you laugh rather than scaring you - Pretty much a direct rip off of My Bones - Really short If you liked this review please consider joining https://steamcommunity.com/groups/completingthebacklog and https://steamcommunity.com/groups/ImperialReviews
(Key retrieved courtesy of an orlygift.com giveaway. Thanks, guys!)
Hell is generous enough to give you a flashlight.
Alas, another GameGuru title...making my 4th GameGuru title played and no, it's not good. That said, it is an asset flipper. As you know from the store page, you play as a tormented man who suddenly appears in hell in this adventure called The Spirit Underneath. I suppose you could classify this game as a psychological thriller rather than a horror game. Unlike the trailer (which shows 2 monsters), you only have one stupid afro zombie to deal with in the second level (and the trailer even shows how to get rid of him)...the winged demon does not make an appearance. The Spirit Underneath is a GameGuru title, which my ASUS laptop just doesn't seem to agree with as it'll run at a maximum framerate of 13 FPS. The load times are also a bit disappointingly long. My playtime says I was playing for about 50 minutes, but the factors to consider is that I had to restart twice due to a combination of feeling lost and being called away. Aside from that, the game is less than 30 minutes long (both routes) Yes, I don't like horror games and watched a gameplay vid (so I was a bit spoiled since I am a bit of a coward who doesn't like horror or jumpscares), but that does not affect my score. As mentioned before, there really isn't anything to be scared of in The Spirit Undernath aside from 1 stupid monster, some harmless bunnies that try to force you into a corner so you can't move, a low framerate, one jumpscare mannequin (It's really not that bad. A slight startle, but it doesn't attack), various typos, and over-placed sound effects. That said, this game is well-suited for the lightweights who do not enjoy horror games. The asking price for The Spirit Underneath is $4, but feels more like it's worth about $0.20. I will say that I like the effort that the developer put into the narrative and the asset placement, but it's far from perfected. Grab it on sale if you simply MUST have this title. Though, I think it's also best said that you won't be missing anything from not owning this title. 1/10 This environment is more like Purgatory than it is Hell.
Don't Buy This
This game is one of the more lackluster things that has came out of GameGuru, it is better than Slingshot People, but worse than elves adventure. I thought that I had hit the bottom of the barrel when I had played Elves Adventure, but that was just the beginning of the GameGuru sh!tposting. This game is a horror-ish game with such enemies as a stoner-afro zombie, a few rabbits, and a few flying imps trapped in cages. I don't understand why people complain about it being dark, because I could see everything just fine without the flashlight it gives you. It's just a bad game and the story is tied together using a single shredded thread and it takes 30 minutes tops to beat, if you go for all endings using saves. The fact that they are charging $4 for 30 minutes of terrible content is a joke and anybody who bought it for that price should be ashamed. If anything, buy this through 3rd party sites or don't at all. I don't need to tell you that it is not good. As long as you can tell that's it's made by GameGuru, you can automatically assume that it is a bad game. I will stand by that until a decent game is made through it. One thing that I was unsure of is that I had two saves already slotted, but it was the first time that I had booted up the game.
*WARNING: This game has been reviewed by GameGuru standards. Normal player discretion is advised.* The Spirit Underneath is perhaps the best game made with GameGuru but this is not saying much since the game is nothing but a poor's man (or should I say homeless!) version of Dear Esther and Amnesia: A Machine of Pigs... POSITIVES + Cheap, uninspired but yet creepy sound effects (assets) + Some sense of narrative (although underdevelopped) + Two endings (although unrewarding) NEGATIVES - GameGuru !!! - ASSET FLIPS !!! - Horrendous visuals - Constant and long loading time - Constrained and linear levels - Poorly written story - Very short (around 20 minutes) Why waste your time and money on this game when there are better games on the market... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXF61A93LsM&feature=youtu.be Rating: 1.0 / 10
Lazy, lazy, lazy. First of all, I'm 90% certain this is a FPS Creator game, and if you buy a lot of indie games, you're probably already aware of the limitations and reputation of that game engine. The game is full of horror game cliches, none of which are even remotely scary. There's items that don't work (and would be pointless if they did). There's sudden jarring changes in art style (like cartoon characters suddenly appearing in the game, and a couple sci-fi textures). There's hovering tables, hovering signs, overlapping textures which produce that lovely flashing effect when you walk near them. Lighting doesn't work half the time, and when it does work it's harsh and ugly. Load times are terrible (one of the clues to me that it's a FPS Creator game). You can easily complete the entire game in 20 minutes, and there is absolutely zero replay value. Almost everything in the product description is an ludicrous exaggeration. "Living world", I guess, means that two of the (tiny) levels have creatures that walk around in them? "Multiple open area levels", well I guess they're open but they're like maybe 1200 square feet in size. "Unique story", hah! It's nothing but cliches piled on cliches. Just all-around an amazingly lazy and uncreative game.
