About

After receiving a letter from his parents, Ito reluctantly returns home to help the family farm and restaurant. As he settles back into family life, Ito realizes that the once peaceful village hides an ancient secret, and the town needs his help to reveal its forbidden past, and the dark cloud that haunts them.

As you explore the area around Zoz and help the townspeople, take advantage of Ito’s skills with his trusty machete as you slash and dodge through enemies while teaming up with several trusted companions. Each one uses their own unique skills to dispatch enemies.

Food is the way to people’s hearts in Zoz, and giving townsfolk their favorite meal will increase your bonds and allow you to learn more about them. Or eat the meals yourself to gain powerful stat boosts for your next hunt.

Everyone has a story to tell, and it’s up to Ito’s mastering of the soul-infused machete and his magic-infused recipes to help them overcome their personal nightmares. Help legendary town heroes, fashionable shopkeepers, stars of the Boonbola team, leaders of a local magical sect, and speak with a Soulsmith who is able to imbue magic into weapons and tools.

It's delightful to pick up an anime RPG with a soul and this is it! There was a lot of care put into the stepped animation stylization and visuals for all the elements of the worlds to make it feel like you're playing an anime. Soundtrack full of bangers, and so much character to the environments that you know they were not an afterthought. It takes a bit to get the hang of combat and controlling Zee for control/bomb mechanics, but 2 hrs in and I was able to sink in and enjoy what the game has got to offer. I appreciate that they don't mess around and that the combat does not baby me into safety. The way food and cooking was incorporated into this feels way more meaningful and marries really well to the world themes and story of the game. Don't play this on an empty stomach either, you'll regret it.
A little rough around the edges and it's pacing starts out a little slow (things don't really pick up and start to flow until the end of Chapter 2/start of Chapter 3) but once things get going and its story starts coming together, it's a solid adventure game. No big upgrade trees or anything like that. You will get some minor upgrades, some new companions, and the recipies/cooking you do is what carries you through in terms of stat adjustments. Ultimately, the art and design are really where the game shines as everything has a lot of character to it. The animated scenes carry some old anime stylings without feeling out of place with the cultural theme the game is going for and it's not shy about making a few references to its roots. While it's temping to call it a "cozy" game because of the food, family, and farming aspects, the story actually touches on some deeper topics and doesn't shy away from some of the darker aspects of the theme. Overall runtime was about 13-14 hours though if you want to farm. do more of the cooking minigame and grind out some of the later achievements you could get a bit more out of it. TL;DR: If you appreciate the art style/theme and don't get frustrated over some rough edges here and there, it's definitely worth your time.
Such a charming style with a big cast of fun characters! The town itself is jam packed with so many details and nooks and crannies to find and I really enjoyed the pace of the story between exploring the town, farming n cooking, or going out fighting. Never felt like any one aspect overstayed its welcome. The combat started off great but Im moreso impressed with how many additional layers stack up, enemies types you encounter, and combat tools you get that are fun to dig into.
This has gotta be THE MOST mixed I've ever felt on a game. The game has an absolutely stellar visual style, fantastic music, solid combat, and lovingly rendered foods. But it's all just kinda...lacking that last extra bit to make it really IDEAL. The combat just needs a little extra tech and strategy, there are only four upgrades in the whole game, the cooking and farming is basically a really involved crafting system for healing items, and the farming never really changes or anything. But like I said, it's only really stopping the game from being IDEAL. The combat, while lacking a little, is fun and strategic, the music is delightful, the visual style is impeccable, and ARGH! I really hope the devs get to do more. Maybe an expansion, or a sequel someday. I want to see what this team is really capable of with some practice. But at the end of the day, the game is fun if you're a fan of classic Zelda-style 3d brawlers of the PS2 days. It's just lacking that one little something to make it perfect.
This game is super cute and pretty. :3 just make sure you know – it was made for controller. adapted somehow for keyboard but I'd discourage from trying to use it. best just grab your gamepad before starting.
Town of Zoz
AD 2026/4/26 23:21
Charming game that deservers more attention, delightful world and stylized characters with a unique concept that's not attempted enough. Cooking mini game is fun once you get the hang of it and combat feels like it should have combos or a parry but that could just be my "souls-like" brain talking. If you love PS2 era games or Ds hidden gems this game is diamond.
Town of Zoz is a charming action-adventure RPG that successfully blends storytelling, exploration, cooking, farming, and combat into a cohesive experience built around community and culture. Developed by Studio Pixanoh and published by Balor Games, the game distinguishes itself through its strong Latin American influences and its emphasis on personal relationships rather than world-ending stakes alone. While many modern indie RPGs combine life-simulation mechanics with adventure gameplay, Town of Zoz manages to carve out its own identity through its heartfelt themes, memorable setting, and unique focus on food as a means of connecting people. The story follows Ito, a young shaman chef who returns to his hometown after years away. Expecting to simply help with the family restaurant, he instead finds a community facing various struggles, both ordinary and supernatural. As Ito reconnects with old friends and encounters new faces, he becomes involved in uncovering mysteries that threaten the town's well-being. The narrative places significant importance on family bonds, friendship, healing, and cultural traditions, creating a more intimate journey than the grand fantasy epics that dominate the genre. The writing frequently focuses on emotional connections between characters, making the town itself feel like an important part of the adventure rather than merely a backdrop. One of the game's defining mechanics revolves around cooking. Instead of serving only as a source of healing items or temporary buffs, food acts as a bridge between characters. Preparing meals allows Ito to strengthen relationships, unlock conversations, and learn more about the residents of Zoz. This system gives purpose to nearly every activity in the game. Exploring wilderness areas provides ingredients, farming produces crops, combat yields resources, and all of these elements eventually contribute to creating dishes that benefit both gameplay progression and character development. The result is a satisfying gameplay loop where every task feels connected to a larger purpose. Combat introduces a welcome layer of action through the partnership between Ito and his spiritual companion, Zee. Battles combine melee attacks, special abilities, and supernatural powers, creating encounters that require more than simple button-mashing. Players must learn how to balance offensive pressure with strategic use of spirit-based skills, particularly during tougher enemy encounters and boss fights. The combat system remains accessible throughout the adventure while offering enough variety to prevent repetitive gameplay. Although it may not reach the complexity of dedicated action RPGs, it serves the game's broader design very effectively. Exploration is another strength. The world of Zoz is filled with colorful locations, hidden resources, side activities, and characters with their own stories to tell. Progression often encourages players to venture into dangerous areas in search of ingredients, materials, and answers to ongoing mysteries. This sense of discovery keeps the adventure engaging, especially because exploration consistently feeds back into other systems such as cooking, crafting, and relationship building. The game avoids making any single mechanic feel isolated from the rest of the experience. The farming mechanics are intentionally streamlined, which helps maintain the game's pacing. Rather than overwhelming players with complex agricultural management, Town of Zoz treats farming as one component of a larger adventure. Growing crops provides useful ingredients and supports the restaurant-focused gameplay, but it never becomes an exhausting daily obligation. This balance allows players to enjoy the relaxing aspects of cultivation without losing sight of the story and exploration that drive the overall experience. Visually, Town of Zoz leaves a strong impression. The art style is vibrant, expressive, and full of personality. Character designs are memorable, environments are rich with detail, and the world feels inspired by real cultural influences rather than generic fantasy conventions. The animated story sequences add further appeal, helping emotional moments land more effectively while giving the game a distinctive presentation. Every area feels carefully crafted to reinforce the setting's identity, contributing to an atmosphere that is both welcoming and adventurous. The soundtrack deserves similar praise. The music complements the game's themes perfectly, blending warmth, energy, and occasional mystery to support both quiet character moments and action-oriented sequences. Combined with strong environmental design, the audio helps create a world that feels alive and culturally authentic. It is the kind of soundtrack that enhances immersion without constantly demanding attention. Despite its many strengths, the game is not entirely free from issues. Some gameplay systems can feel less polished than others, and occasional technical hiccups may interrupt the flow of the adventure. Certain sections of the story develop more slowly than expected, and some players may wish for deeper progression systems or more elaborate combat mechanics. However, these shortcomings rarely overshadow the game's core appeal. The foundation remains strong because the developers clearly understand the importance of character, atmosphere, and emotional investment. What ultimately makes Town of Zoz memorable is the way it combines numerous gameplay elements into a unified experience centered on community. Every battle, harvested crop, prepared meal, and completed quest contributes to rebuilding relationships and helping the town thrive. Rather than treating its mechanics as separate features, the game weaves them together into a cohesive adventure that feels meaningful from beginning to end. Town of Zoz may not revolutionize the action RPG genre, but it offers a refreshing and heartfelt take on familiar concepts. Its engaging blend of cooking, exploration, combat, farming, and relationship-building creates a rewarding experience filled with charm and personality. Players looking for a story-driven adventure with strong cultural influences, lovable characters, and a welcoming world will find plenty to appreciate. Even with a few rough edges, it stands as an impressive indie title that delivers both emotional warmth and enjoyable gameplay. Rating: 8/10
