Difficulty is kinda overhyped as respawn system of pointdevice mode took away a lot of stress of playing a full run. Pretty good game with a fun mode regardless, it's good if you don't feel like committing to a 1CC run.
Touhou Kanjuden ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom is a standout entry in the legendary Touhou Project series, delivering a bullet-hell experience that is both beautiful and merciless. Developed by Shanghai Alice and published by Mediascape Co., Ltd., the game embraces the franchise’s reputation for challenging gameplay while introducing new systems that reshape how players approach failure and progression. Set against a conflict involving the Moon, the Lunar Capital, and a threat that could affect both lunar society and Gensokyo, the game combines intense action with the distinctive lore and character-driven storytelling that Touhou fans have come to expect. At its core, the game is a pure test of skill. Players select from several familiar heroines, each offering unique shot types and playstyles, then navigate stages packed with enemy attacks that cover the screen in dazzling patterns. Every encounter demands sharp reflexes and careful positioning, as even a small mistake can result in defeat. What makes the experience remarkable is how thoughtfully designed the bullet patterns are. Rather than feeling chaotic, attacks often resemble elaborate visual puzzles. Success comes from understanding movement, recognizing patterns, and gradually improving through practice. One of the most significant features is the inclusion of Pointdevice Mode, a system that replaces traditional lives with checkpoint-based retries. Instead of restarting large sections after failure, players can repeatedly challenge difficult segments until they master them. This approach transforms the game into a learning experience where persistence is rewarded. Traditional Legacy Mode remains available for those who prefer the classic Touhou formula, but Pointdevice Mode serves as a brilliant compromise that maintains the game's punishing difficulty while making progress feel more attainable. The game's stage design consistently pushes players to adapt. Each level introduces new hazards, enemy formations, and attack styles that keep the action fresh throughout the campaign. The difficulty escalates steadily, ensuring that later stages feel like a true culmination of everything learned earlier. Boss battles are especially memorable, often lasting several phases and introducing increasingly complex spell cards. These encounters are the centerpiece of the experience, combining visual spectacle with some of the most demanding gameplay in the series. The cast of opponents leaves a lasting impression. Characters such as Doremy Sweet, Clownpiece, Sagume Kishin, Junko, and Hecatia Lapislazuli bring distinct personalities and unique battle mechanics that make every confrontation memorable. Their attacks are not only challenging but also thematically tied to their identities and roles within the story. The result is a collection of boss fights that feel meaningful from both a gameplay and narrative perspective. Visually, Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom succeeds through artistic creativity rather than technical complexity. The colorful projectiles, expressive character portraits, and imaginative stage backgrounds create an atmosphere that is simultaneously elegant and overwhelming. The lunar themes give the game a distinctive identity compared to other Touhou titles, with dreamlike environments and cosmic imagery reinforcing the narrative's focus on the Moon and its inhabitants. Despite the sheer number of bullets on screen, the visuals remain readable enough to support the demanding gameplay. The soundtrack deserves equal praise. Every stage and boss battle is accompanied by energetic compositions that heighten tension and excitement. The music shifts effortlessly between mysterious, dramatic, and exhilarating moods, helping to establish a strong sense of progression as players move deeper into the adventure. Many tracks remain memorable long after the game is finished, reinforcing the emotional impact of major encounters and story moments. The story itself is more engaging than one might expect from a shoot-'em-up. While the narrative is delivered in the series’ characteristic style, filled with eccentric characters and supernatural themes, it adds context and motivation to the action. The conflict surrounding purification, revenge, and the Lunar Capital gives the journey a sense of purpose beyond simply clearing stages. Players invested in Touhou lore will find plenty to appreciate, while newcomers can still enjoy the spectacle of the unfolding events. The game's biggest obstacle is undoubtedly its difficulty. Even with the checkpoint system, many sections require considerable patience and repeated attempts. Players unfamiliar with bullet-hell shooters may initially feel overwhelmed by the density and speed of enemy attacks. However, those willing to embrace the challenge will discover a rewarding experience that consistently encourages improvement. Every successful dodge and every conquered spell card feels earned, creating a powerful sense of accomplishment. Touhou Kanjuden ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom stands as one of the strongest and most demanding entries in the Touhou franchise. Its combination of intricate bullet patterns, inventive mechanics, memorable bosses, compelling music, and distinctive lunar setting creates an experience that is both frustrating and exhilarating in the best possible way. While its steep learning curve may not appeal to everyone, fans of challenging shooters will find an exceptional game that rewards dedication and mastery. Rating: 9/10
