I only have Fall of the Samurai but the graphics, the AI, and the units are still amazing to learn and use, not to mention the mods. The only issue I have is that EVERY Total War game has AI doing the same calvary strategy, which makes it really easy to counter unless you are new to the series. In 2026, it's a decent pick.
One of the best strategy games ever made. The atmosphere, soundtrack, and Japanese setting are outstanding, and the battles still feel satisfying even after all these years. The game isn't perfect, though. The AI can be frustrating at times, diplomacy often feels unreliable, and the Realm Divide mechanic can make the late game feel repetitive. Despite these flaws, the core gameplay is so strong that it's easy to come back for "just one more campaign." If you enjoy grand strategy and tactical battles, Shogun 2 is absolutely worth playing.

Fun
Do you want to build an entire army of emotionless, fearless, fanatically devoted Naginata wielding monks from the Northern end of Feudal Japan? Do you want to put into battle no less than 8 regiments of archers that are dirt cheap but have about 250 men in them each? Do you like answering "You and what Army" with a charge of around a thousand screaming, red-armor clad psychopaths with bows, naginata and katanas out of the woods that ol' boss didn't quite see there? Do you like the feeling of spending maybe a half an hour on a game to get yourself started, only to have passed 7 consecutive hours without blinking or getting up to pee? Then look no further than Total War: SHOGUN 2! Now complete with the "Oh Jesus you could actually regress their technology?" and "AHAHAHA GATLING GUNS DO WHAT?" Expansions!
So far my favourite game in the TW franchise (Having played Napoleon, Empire and Medieval 2). You can clearly see, even 15 years on, how the devs poured their hearts and souls into this game, the mechanics are the smoothest running of any TW game I've played, the AI isn't TOO dumb and can still put up an adequate fight. Many of the errors and issues I found with the old TW games have been amended e.g. selection and targeting bugs as well as selection and movement not working in pause mode in Napoleon and Empire. The graphics are STILL visually pleasing with some of the sickest animations I've ever seen with combat of this scale (charging my katana samurai into the enemy and seeing legs, arms and heads rolling with finishers and all is actually dazzling). Finally, the amount of content is just wild, practically 2.5 (Rise of the samurai is similar to the OG but still a cool feature) different games, and I haven't even had a chance to properly play FOTS yet even though THATS WHY I BOUGHT THE GAME, because there's just so much variation and difficulty to the base game alone. I can see many more hours poured into this with plenty of more content to explore. Overall 9.9/10 game.
