From Ink and Paper to the Greek Phalanx As a writer who spent years researching and writing a novel about ancient Sparta, computer games never really appealed to me. Being over fifty, life moves at a different pace... But when I bought a new computer recently and wanted to see what the machine could actually do, my son installed Steam for me without hesitation. I typed "Greece" and "Rome" into the search bar, and it didn't take long before I stumbled upon Total War: ROME II. Naturally, I had read all the old complaints from when it first launched. But let’s be honest—nothing has really changed in the gaming industry over the years. Developers sink millions into a project, mega-corporations like Sega press for a release, and the product gets rushed out regardless of how many bugs remain. Age brings perspective and patience, though. The wise choice is always to wait for the patches and let others trip over the initial stumbling blocks. Tactical Thrills in the Emperor’s Edition Which brings me to jumping aboard with the refined Emperor’s Edition. And good goodness, what a ride! I haven't found anything this addictive in years. The ability to relive history through so many different factions gives the game incredible freshness and endless replayability. So far, I’ve played campaigns as the Romans, my beloved Spartans, the Athenians, and Epirus—and I had an absolute blast with every single one. The sheer volume of strategic and tactical options on both the campaign map and the battlefield is fascinating: Choke Points: Holding a narrow mountain pass or fortifying a river crossing. Ambushes: Enticing an enemy army into a perfectly prepared trap in the woods. Massive Turnarounds: Watching your force wipe out a enemy two or three times its size without getting your hands dirty. A clear pattern emerged during my play: my key to victory almost always lies in securing a technological edge. If I can survive the rough early phase, my advanced workshops and barracks start churning out units that are light-years ahead of whatever the AI factions are fielding. And when the autoresolve predicts an inevitable defeat or unacceptable casualties? I take great delight in taking personal command. There is nothing more satisfying than proving the odds-makers wrong—whether you're sweeping away hordes of untrained levies with elite legions, or cutting down the Praetorian Guard or Celtic Oathsworn who fight to the very last man. The Wonder of the Modding Community Just when I thought the game had run out of surprises, I discovered the Steam Workshop. Hats off to the modders! These additions have elevated an already fantastic experience to a whole new level. The 4 turns per year mod (finally, generals don't age at warp speed!), clearer color-coded agents, and dozens of new historically accurate units... I feel like a kid on Christmas morning, eagerly unwrapping presents every day to see what new toy the community has crafted. Unclouded Honeymoon Bliss Do I have any complaints about the game? Honestly, not really. I'm like a newlywed on his honeymoon right now. I couldn't care less if my bride leaves her clothes on the bathroom floor, or if the 4-turns-per-year mod makes agents slightly overpowered. I'm enjoying the game far too much to bother looking for minor flaws. There will be plenty of time for cynicism later—right now, I have more provinces to bend to the will of my empire.
Ocean 8,5/10

A lifetime favorite. Why Roman Emperors go mad - simulator. Overpowered in its ways to entertain. Are you not entertained?
