I got this game a zillion years ago and never bothered with a review, perhaps that says it all. I'll try to be brief. This game really deserves a `Mixed` to even a thumbs down. Basically CA took on too much with this idea. They'll never admit it, but they did. An almost entire world at war was too ambitious. The AI is terrible. The Diplomatic AI is stupid for the most part , as in the Iroquai of America demanding SCOTLAND from me for peace??? AI Infantry and artillery in land battles simply not doing what 17th century units of those types should and usually just bug out. It took CA ages before they even managed to patch it enough so enemies, like France, would actually have a go at attacking England. And then they quit. Sieges are woeful and totally unhistorical. Climbing hooks, anyone? It all looks quite nice, even today, especially ships, but it's all kinda basic. BUT if you're an ardent fan of 17th century warfare, you will ignore all that just to see all your little stick men standing in colourful uniforms taking turns to shoot each other, and your beloved artillery roll up to lay waste to oncoming enemies with grapeshot which is why this game is still popular- It's all they really have in the PC gaming sphere... This is why you're seeing positive reviews that refuse to divulge the reality- I understand, but people reading for the truth facts will be misled, so I supply some context. Oh and Mods, yes, Mods. Mods are the way to go to give this some true life. Modders have done their level best over years to try and improve things and, in most cases, have done a reasonable job. The game gets a thumbs up for modders work, On its own it would be thumbs down, really. CA;s work is just the base bread and Mods are the rest of the tasty pizza. I suppose worth it for a look at a super sale price, you may enjoy it as I have sometimes. That's it.
Absolutely amazing game, even after so much years its one of the best games about gunpowder era, and another big plus, is the amount of fantastic mods that improve the game so much more, worth every cent !
The only way to improve this game would be a mod that makes it suck you off at the same time - except that's basically the experience of winning a battle.
10/10
Its alright
juegardo !!!!!
I guess these games aren't made for historical accuracy, but it was really trippy to play the main campaign and see their writers' skew on colonial American history. Apologies this review isn't more about the gameplay, but I just had to get this off my chest. I guess the narrative they spin is summed up as a guy reflecting on American history going "I'm a guy from Massachusetts fighting for a free and independent United States of America (which, as everyone knows, was what the Americans wanted immediately after Lexington and Concord in 1775). We want independence and that instinct comes from our forefathers who bravely left England to murder all the savage, primitive Indians (who've never seen white people before and all have bows and hatchets while we all have firearms) and find freedom in their new brave and free freedom land of freest brave bravery freedom". I also appreciate that it follows the American school system's trend of going "Jamestown was founded in 1607, and then 150 years passed where nothing else interesting happened in the American colonies anywhere and BAM now we're at the French and Indian War in 1754". Guess they were pressed for time lmao. I just sat through the cutscenes that explained their take on the story in a bit of a shocked state. Granted this game is from 2009, so it's hardly surprising that they didn't really capture the nuance of it, but never before have I been so utterly baffled at a narrative of American history quite so devoid of nuance or so divorced from reality. It was a trainwreck that I couldn't stop watching lol. I would say this game's more valuable to the popular understanding of history as a period piece of American exceptionalism and militarism (with respect). The gameplay itself is fine, I don't know if I've played it long enough yet but I beat the Powhatan Confederacy, and then I beat the French out of New York and captured Fort Niagara. Anyway, 10/10 game of the year every year i cri evereytim. Still a better love story than Twilight.
very fun i am now a empire
