An excellent total war version. Unique rules capture the period well and formations recreate tactical battles pretty well.
This is the game that (as of May 2026) I've spent the most accumulated hours playing. Really fun strategic warfare is the primary engine of this game, with engaging realistic contexts, fighting units that are appropriate for the time-period and players, and easy-to-digest diplomatic and economic supplemental components that help build the narrative as the player being the empire's ruler. The graphics are, at this point, outdated and the game unfortunately does not run well on robust machines, but truly a remarkable moment in the Total War franchise.
WONDERFUL game. AI could use an overhaul but as it is, it will be challenging for most players, myself included. I recommend 100%.
A awesome, classic Totalwar game!
mid graphics one of my favorite game on steam i have a low end device but empire total war does not crash
Well balanced and not hard to win.
I cannot in good conscience recommend this game anymore. Back about 10 years ago the developers at CA went nuts and started changing their games to be PC instead of historically accurate. Before then I had bought every Total war game they made. When they went PC they started changing all their games to be Politically Correct they even changed the games that were already out. You didn't get a choice whether you wanted your games changed or not they just didn't care about their fans enough. And they have been going down hill ever since.
This game pulls of most of the goals it set out to let us experience with its massive map and scope. If you get it you will be in for a treat. I do recomend trying vanilla before moding it, but DM and TW E 2 are amazing and I strongly recomend you give thema shot, even if you didnt like vanilla that much. Overall 8/10, a bit of jank and instability in later turns, silly AI both in map and battle but at higher dificulty it will be a challege.
