A foundation for a great game, it becomes repetitive after a few hours and now I have no interest in ever playing it again. With no progression system or even a leaderboard this game plunges in the realm of the 1000s of other games “potential but abandoned” 3/10 not worth your time.
Don't eat for 24hrs before playing
ToruTaru is a game that has been on my radar for a while. A game with a beautiful retro art/unique art style and haunting soundtrack, this really stood out to me and given the price point, I saw no reason not to take a look. Finding out your waifu has gone missing and potentially gone to a mansion they used to frequent as a child, you take a cab from your cosy condominium into the middle of the forest in the middle of the night, deciding you only need to take matches as a light source... Entering the mansion, you soon realise something isn't right. The door slamming behind you, you need to find a key to unlock the door on each floor to keep progressing, finding various friendly and not-so friendly characters along the way. It has a simple, yet addictive gameplay loop, which keeps you coming back. The sound work is outstanding and often sends shivers down my spine. Not just the sound of the creepy creatures in the monster, but the ambience and background noise really add to the atmosphere (sounds of running footsteps, voices, tv's turning on). Given it being procedurally generated, there is an element to RNG to this. Some floors are a straight line that you'll complete in 20 seconds, others are labyrinth's that you'll spend minutes running through, hiding from ghosts, with a sphincter so clenched you can use it as a cigar cutter. This RNG nature is worth flagging, as I can see it frustrating people, but that's the nature of the game, which I love. Some runs go much smoother than others, but restarting and hopping back into the action is only a button press away. The best tip I can give is to KEEP MAKING NOTES on the in-game map. Mark blocked corridors, when you find the exit, mark it too, so you know where to run back to. Also opening the map pauses the game and reduces the music, so you can focus on your next move :) You can walk with the map open, but it does progress the game in slo-mo, so it's not a cheese to explore without getting killed (I tested this and died very slowly as I walked into the ghost next to me). If you like horror games, I'd honestly recommend checking this out. The price point makes it hard not to. I believe only a single person worked on this game?, which makes it even more amazing. Worth noting too is that at the time of writing, it's in early access, but given the price point and what is currently there, I don't think this should put you off. Historically, before patching, this (in my opinion) would've been a game already shipped and moved out of early access! On the topic of food, similar to the black ooze mentioned in game, don't eat for 24hrs before playing, or you too (don't judge me), might find yourself leaking brown sludge. Pro's Unique artstyle Great atmosphere Simple to learn gameplay loop Con's RNG in level generation (a main selling point of the game), might not be to the taste of some, making it seem 'unfair' Can't eat for 24hrs before playing Overall Rating 10/10: BUY IT NOW

FULL DISCLOSURE: I've played about half an hour of this. I want to like it, I really do. But ultimately it's probably not for me *right now*. Things I like: -Randomly generated floors -Drawing your own map -Ghost designs -walking into a room only for a lamp to be thrown at you (wow. rude.) -The game over animation -A talisman literally says you're supposed to slap the spirit with it. I succeeded, and the spirit blew up on me. Things I dislike: -Starting a brand new game. going into a room, and a ghost half-hidden inside walls kills you within 22 seconds of starting. I can tell I'm getting screamed at, but not where they are... -The girlfriend looks like a deflating balloon, but you can see yourself in the mirror at the start, and you've got like, twice as much detail. Personally I think it should be the opposite, since you can't really see you, but the first thing you do is see her and emphasize your attraction to Sloth from the Goonies. That being said, I'm absolutely aware this is early access, so I will more than happily update my review! I'm excited to see where this can go! Verdict: For $5, you could either have a spooky time, or a McRib... Personally I'm going with this one, since I won't be running to the bathroom within the hour. Recommend!
Not really sure what all the hype is about this one. The art style is cool, sure, but wandering around procedurally-generated corridors until I instadie to a ghost that's floating through walls isn't my cup of tea.

There is an otherworldly quality to the inhabitants of ToruTaru that many other horror titles attempt to imitate, but few come close. This is a visual and sonic nightmare, and it's awesome. At its core, ToruTaru is a procedurally generated maze game, seemingly old-school in nature, with a few hints of further complexity trickling in here and there. Collect items, avoid getting your soul torn to shreds, and figure out where the hell you're going. You WILL get lost. You will NEVER feel powerful. To say more would spoil the experience. It's difficult and creepy, and for a couple bucks, absolutely worth a shot. Fans of early PC/PS1 style horror titles will feel especially at home here. I'm excited to see where this thing goes!
