Looks cool, maybe its a good game? In the first minute of play the tutorial has you jump back and forth between two adjacent walls. Easy enough I was doing it 30 years ago with Ninja Gaiden. NO. Just no. The jump mechanism is so horrible,it takes just enough time to respond to button press that youve already slid down the wall so much youll never make it to the top.Let alone making it halfway up the wall. Maybe its made for a game controller.
Game will be removed soon.
Toolboy, developed by Majestic Twelve and published by Art Games Studio S.A., is an indie puzzle-platformer that sets out to recapture the spirit of classic 2D games while injecting a modern sci-fi twist. The premise is simple but playful: a repair robot is called into work on what should have been his day off, only to stumble upon a corporate conspiracy hidden deep within the company’s power department. What starts as a routine fix quickly spirals into an escape story where the mechanical protagonist must use his wits, agility, and newly acquired powers to survive a hostile environment filled with traps, drones, and environmental hazards. This setup provides just enough narrative flavor to contextualize the action without ever becoming overly elaborate, keeping the focus firmly on the platforming and puzzles. The structure of the game revolves around Toolboy gradually learning new abilities that expand his range of options and shake up the gameplay loop. Powers such as Remote Control allow him to manipulate devices, while Cube lets him disguise himself as part of the scenery to avoid detection. Later upgrades, like SpeedRun and Magnetic Walk, introduce bursts of speed or the ability to move heavy objects to solve puzzles and create new platforming opportunities. These mechanics, while not groundbreaking, are fun to experiment with and give the game a steady sense of progression. They also help diversify the challenges, ensuring that the player is rarely doing the same thing for long stretches of time. Visually, Toolboy embraces a functional but serviceable sci-fi aesthetic. Levels are set inside industrial complexes, mechanical corridors, and corporate interiors, all brought to life with a mix of moving platforms, conveyor belts, and robotic drones. The art style is clean enough to convey the necessary information for navigation and puzzle-solving, though it occasionally feels rough around the edges. Animations can be stiff, hitboxes don’t always feel precise, and there are moments where the level design doesn’t quite match the polish of more refined platformers. Despite these shortcomings, there is a certain charm in the way the protagonist is designed and the way his environment reflects the corporate dystopia at the heart of the story. The gameplay blends traditional platforming with puzzle elements and moments of stealth. Early sections ease players in with relatively forgiving jumps and straightforward obstacles, but the difficulty quickly ramps up. Later levels require precise timing, clever use of abilities, and careful observation of environmental cues. There is a balance between action and problem-solving, with some areas testing reflexes and others demanding patience to figure out how to bypass security systems or manipulate machinery. While this variety is a strength, it also highlights some of the game’s flaws. The controls are not always as tight as they should be, and moments requiring precision can become frustrating when the character feels floaty or unresponsive. One of the stronger aspects of the game is its sound design. The industrial hums, the mechanical effects, and the subdued background music work together to reinforce the atmosphere of a corporate facility filled with hidden dangers. While the soundtrack may not stand out on its own, it supports the tone effectively. Accessibility is also considered, with multiple language options available, allowing a broader audience to engage with the game without difficulty. Reception to Toolboy has been mixed, and this reflects the dual nature of its strengths and weaknesses. On the positive side, many players appreciate the creativity of its abilities, the nostalgic throwback to older platformers, and the variety of challenges it introduces. On the negative side, there are frequent criticisms of the controls, the uneven pacing, and the lack of polish in both design and execution. Some puzzles feel underexplained, leaving players to struggle without adequate hints, and the difficulty spikes can feel less like a rewarding test of skill and more like a product of inconsistent mechanics. Ultimately, Toolboy is the kind of game that thrives on modest expectations. Its price point is low, and for those who enjoy indie experiments in platforming, it provides a few hours of entertainment wrapped in a quirky sci-fi setting. It is not a highly polished or groundbreaking title, and it falls short of the precision and refinement found in the best platformers. However, for players who enjoy exploring smaller projects with creative ideas and can tolerate rough edges, Toolboy has enough personality and charm to be worth a look. It captures the enthusiasm of a team paying homage to retro sensibilities while trying to carve out a unique identity, even if it doesn’t fully realize its potential. Rating: 5/10
