More people need to play this game if we’re being honest. I love the neo city and all the level designs are gorgeous, shoutout to the Japanese and English VA in the game as well!
I like gameplay of this game with general enemies. But I hate boss-fights. I beat first 3 bosses and it was painful especially third one. And this is on normal difficulty. So if you want shadow-warrior-like gameplay with katana but with much harder bosses - try it, may be this is for you. But I don't like it, it's simply not for me
DAMN fine gameage!
Very fun, fast-paced first-person combat game. Once I got into it I honestly had a hard time to stop playing. I had played the demo a couple months back, and had found it very difficult but I'm happy to say that the full game seems well balanced. It's not perfect optimization-wise though. Watch out for heavy framedrops when you're surrounded with too many enemies and killing them left and right. And there's a part of a mission near the end of the game that had my system going full-throttle on cooling for some reason. As a hired assassin, you take on missions where you run through some vivid neon lit depictions of famous Tokyo districts at night while killing hundreds of enemies, in order to kill a designated boss target. The story is told through very cool interactive comic strip sequences, with fully voiced dialogue lines. After completing a mission, you start again from your apartment, and must pay a bribe to the subway ladies to be able to do the next one. Money can be earned either in missions, or by playing mini-games in town after exiting your apartment (part-time bouncer, pachinko, arcade VR missions, ...). The fact that you can relax a bit right after a mission helped with immersion and kept me playing. What I liked: - Very fun, dynamic and juicy combat. Once you get the hang of it, you can chain enemies and it is very satisfying. On that aspect, the game having you incarnate a blood-trance-driven assassin works perfectly. - I recommend taking on the VR missions at the arcade, going from the very easy ones to the harder ones in order to nicely ramp up the difficulty while you get comfortable with the gameplay mechanics. That way you'll be ready when the game gets difficult, and difficult it does become! - There are many ways to approach a situation. Melee sword combat is central to the gameplay, but you can play either defensively by relying on parry/counters or very aggressively by tanking a bit of damage and refilling your health with the blood enemies drop when they die. You have powerful supernatural blood abilities to unleash whenever they are charged, and you can also pick up range weapons, but they have little ammo so they're more like another tool to help you out of a tough spot or make short work of a very annoying kind of enemy (like those flying pests). - Tokyo by night is beautiful in this game. Over-the-top colors everywhere, reflective materials, and good environmental story-telling with lots of details to look at. It feels lived in, a lot of care has been put into the design of the different locations. I loved looking at all the hand-drawn pieces of art used as ads everywhere. - All characters have very quirky designs, and the way the story was written felt reminiscent of reading a manga or watching an anime that does not take itself seriously and just wants to show you cool stuff. What I disliked: - I wish side-characters would have been modeled in 3D instead of showing up as billboards when encountered in locations - most of the time you only realize you've found somebody because a dialogue UI shows up. Then again I assume it's more a budget/time issue than an artistic choice. - Although it did not bother me that much personally as I enjoyed doing arcade VR missions, I feel like the game should not force you to play intermission minigames if you're not into it. If you want to collect figurines and stuff, fine. But here, transportation is more expensive the more progress you make and you'll eventually have to grind, especially if you want to upgrade your blood abilities. If you're looking for an intense fast-paced FPS game with cool visuals, you'll likely enjoy this one. It's also damn cheap, so you don't have to wait for a sale to grab it!
This game is criminally under-discussed AND underpriced. Even at $20, it would easily be worth a full-price purchase. At $10? Just buy it already. The visuals are incredibly unique and stylish BECAUSE OF the clearly limited budget. This is the definition of making the most of what you've got, and there's far more to enjoy here than certain AAA or even "AAAA" titles I could name. That goes for everything to the 3D-modeled environments and enemies to the 2D sprites that make up the main cast. I'll admit, it was a little jarring at first to see the speaking characters in 2D while the enemies and background NPCs were all 3D, but it ultimately adds to the psychedelic unreality of the setting. Not to mention, those 2D designs are all gorgeous and full of character. Not to mention, the cutscenes are all done in this lightly animated manga style which OOZES style from every single panel. There's one particularly creative shot towards the end of the game that had me literally cheering at my desk -- both because it was so narratively satisfying and because it made such brilliant use of the format. Speaking of cutscenes, I've seen a few other reviewers recommend switching to the Japanese VA instead of the English. Your own mileage may vary, but I personally LOVED the English VA and wouldn't dare switch it. The English voice actors clearly know what they're doing, but there's also this very specific stilted-ness to their delivery that feels in keeping with 90s/early 2000s anime dubs. For me, that only added to the overall vibe. Gameplay-wise, it's a deceptively simple first person SLASHER that has a much higher skill ceiling than it initially lets on. While I found the first level a bit basic and plodding, those concerns quickly melted away as my arsenal expanded and the enemy composition (at first) kept pace. It's no DOOM Eternal, but you will need to use your tools wisely to get to the end of the campaign. Is the game perfect? No. For one thing, the difficult curve can't quite keep up with the player progression by the time you reach new game plus. I actually found the greatest (and most satisfying) challenge in the DLC arcade missions which push your abilities much farther than the main campaign. If the devs end up reading this, here is my request: add something akin to the highest difficulty on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Something that assumes you've already maxed out the skill tree, and thus throws everything it can at you from word jump. This game is a PERFECT candidate for something like that, and it would boost the replay value immensely. On top of that, my biggest disappointment is with game's performance in the final mission. Despite the game running buttery-smooth for the rest of the campaign (and all the arcade missions) the final mission gave me some serious lag spikes and multiple hard crashes. I can only assume that's an optimization issue, and I hope the devs can fix that soon. This game deserves to end on a higher note than that. Those issues aside, I absolutely adore this game. I would KILL to get a sequel, because it would be the perfect chance for the devs to take everything that's already working and polish it to a mirror shine. For now? If you're a fan of first-person melee-focused games -- or if the general vibe of the game appeals to you -- BUY IT NOW. It'll be the best $10 you spend on a game in quite some time.
