Tokyo Tattoo girls is a small game developed by Sushi Typhoon Games, a game development branch of the Sushi Typhoon B/Z series movie production company. As a fan of the Sushi Typhoon productions I picked up this game out of curiosity. The gameplay, which is really not portrayed in the promotional material at all, is fundamentally a mix between an idle game and a minimal grand strategy game. Plenty of elements are automated, such as which territories are invaded. You as a player can use a series of commands to speed up the process and keep yourself safe, as you have a honor meter that essentialy functions as HP. It's a pretty mediocre formula, to be honest. The aesthetics, however, are great in general. While the anime designs of the characters may not be much, this game is extremely japanese both in terms of visuals, musics, world and dialogues. The entire game is based around the yakuza and their iconic tattoo culture. While the game in essence is not terrible, I would not consider it worth the base price. Most importantly, it was not what I expected from the Sushi Typhoon name. Though I'm looking forward for (hopefully) new games from the studio more on the Sushi Typhoon style.
While I'm interested in running a few more characters before calling it quits, one complete run is enough to put down my thoughts. This is a fully deserved mixed review, and I feel bad giving it a thumbs down but its also not something I'd recommend out of the blue to anyone. *Special thanks to the below review that called it Plague Inc. The tutorial sucked and I may have missed out on what this game was trying to do if I didn't go in with this expectation* The basic idea is that you are a legendary tattoo artist who is going to help a girl to reunite the ruins of Tokyo under one ruler. To do this, you send her into a ward to convert Punks and rival clansman into your own followers. Convert enough population and she'll duel the leader of the district and take control. Meanwhile, your followers will move out spread out around Tokyo and recruit people to your cause. Your job, as the legendary tattoo artist, is to assemble a tattoo that appeals to the various people of Tokyo. The better your tattoo matches the locals the faster they'll join your cause and the more your control will spread. (Or you can spend your money on other temporary power ups like preventing turf wars, recruiting faster, or buying cheat dice for gambling) The concept, while crazy, actually kind of works. It plays like an ultra-casual Plague Inc and there's a strange satisfaction watching the followers spread out around the town. It's a moderately tense situation to see aggression brewing in a district and deciding the best way to prevent war. But everything I like here is overshadowed by a complete and total lack of depth. - Match the tattoo to the traits of the cities you're settled into to speed growth - The rival syndicate doesn't really disrupt your plans or close off the borders like Plague Inc, but simply take a shot at your HP bar if they attack - The climactic duels are automatic win the only choice being a 1 in 3 choice that determines your reward for winning - The Tattoo is preset and you complete the entire thing in a single game, meaning that it's lacking that replay value or feeling of "What if I?" I genuinely like whats here, but there is a constant feeling that something is lacking. More meaningful growth, more direct control of armies, an opponent that retakes territory or builds defenses against your specialties, an active option to duel that has a higher chance to win depending on how your outnumber your opponent. I can think of a dozen different little ways that they could have made this experience more meaningful... but, as is, it falls short.
There was no strategy gameplay. I was really excited to see some battle scenes or battle gameplay whatsoever. Unfortunately as many comments already states. This seems like an unfinished game pushed to be released early. I think this game deserves a renovation of the gameplay. The graphic and the voice acting is impecable. Amazing but why is the gameplay horrible?
I don't really know what this game was intended to be, or why it was published in the West, much less by a publisher as well-established as NISA. I've played a number of idle games in my time, and honestly, most of them have more to actively do at any given moment than this one. There is really only one bar to watch tick up, your money bar, and once you've spent the money on a tattoo or command, there isn't much to do but wait for it to tick high enough again other than click on a couple of icons that very occasionally appear, or play an inconsequential dice gambling minigame. Sure, the artwork and music are decent, and I'm willing to bet that most people who enjoy it do so for its aesthetics, but even the ecchi element of the game is far oversold in the promotional materials compared to what is actually in the game. (Not that I'm complaining--I'm not really into that kind of thing, though I'll tolerate it for the sake of good gameplay, story, or humor.) All of that said, I did play on Normal mode, and I have read in other reviews that the harder game modes do require more strategic thinking to beat the game with a good rating. But honestly, I find that a bit hard to believe, because short of the ability to tell your character which ward to invade next, you have no direct control at all over almost anything on the main map. Invasions happen automatically, and telling your character which ward to invade is only going to prompt them to invade that ward earlier than they otherwise might've done. When you consider that wards are not invaded sequentially--you're constantly expanding and invading wards even before you've conquered a single one--the ability to add another ward to that list doesn't make much of a difference at all. And it's not like one ward will give you special bonuses over another--the bonuses for conquering each and every ward is exactly the same: a bit of money and honor, and it turns blue on the map. That's literally it. The only thing I could think that might become more difficult or complex on the harder difficulties is managing the money you do have coming in between tattoos geared towards the specializations of the wards you're currently invading, and commands to help preserve your honor bar as long as possible. Even if that is the case, however, there are free-to-play idle games on Steam or even your phone that involve considerably more strategic planning in that respect, many of them with comparable artwork and music, albeit maybe with fewer boobs. I guess in a word, I'd say this game is fine. There are unlockable commands and items for each difficulty in each route, so you'll have new things to play with in each playthrough, especially if you're going for the ridiculous achievements that require you to play each route 8 times. So you can get your money's worth if you buy the game on sale and happen to enjoy it. As for myself, I'll probably go back to it for a quick playthrough every now and again when I feel like playing something mindless, but it's not a game I can recommend to others to buy, especially at full price, for most people.
This is a great game for anyone who wants to take up a challenge. I've had this game in my library for like 2 years and never bothered to play it till now, but now that I've played it, I can say it's genuinely fun, though it's probably because I haven't played any other game like this. It's very sad to see such a good game get such bad reviews and I'd like to say to the people who see this game that you should give it a try if you have the chance and money. The gameplay in the game is relatively simple once you get used to it, you just level up skills and wait to see what the RNG gods decide to do to you. Normal is a very simple difficulty to start on and is almost impossible to fail, but once you get up to hard and hell mode, you will start having difficulty managing all of your resources correctly. That's when you start having fun though, since hard mode and hell mode are actually hard not because of challenging mechanics and what-not, it's because of the RNG. Once you start getting good runs and actually passing the modes, you gain a sense of satisfaction hitting the S rank with each character. Another fun part of the game is each character. Depending on which character you choose, their skill set and different tattoos will greatly effect the gameplay. What's enjoyable about the different characters are how each have their own unique play style and how if you're going for achievements, you will have a different experience every time. That's it for my review, and if you are reading this within a week I posted this, I'm sorry for having such a low play time, since I did just start playing it today. If you decide to get this game, I hope you will give it longer than 1-2 hours and challenge yourself by playing the harder game modes (you haven't gotten a true taste of the experience until you've cleared hell mode once). Good luck, have fun!
