I got this game through a Mystery Bundle on Fanatical, so I did not pay full price and cannot say what I exactly paid for it. I do know that the full price is WAY too much. Yes, I played this game for less than an hour, but in this case I feel like I can already review it. I really wish I could recommend this game, but it saddens me that I cannot. The art style is really cute. The soundtrack is well done and relaxing. The little talking noises and made-up language the characters speak are adorable as well (not to mention the cute af barking tadpole-like creatures! Where can I adopt one irl?!). The no-dialogue, and instead the use of speech balloons with images, really adds to the relaxing and cozy vibe (says me, who usually prefers spoken/written dialogue). However, the gameplay and controls are more frustrating than relaxing. :c Yes, this game has fetch quests. Unlike a lot of people who dislike them, I can absolutely enjoy fetch quests, if that is what I need in a game at that moment. Having AuDHD (Autism & ADHD), my brain often gets tired and overstimulated. Despite that, I'm still often in the mood to play a game, and I'll want to play something chill and simple, with not much thinking required. Fetch quests can be amazing for that type of specific neurodivergent mood. I thought this game would be the perfect game for just that. Sad to say, I thought wrong. I agree with a lot of the negative reviews. The lack of a compass, map, quest markers and quest log makes it REALLY confusing to navigate the environment and fulfill what the frog villagers ask for. I managed to help two of them, and also work on fixing my boat a little bit, then set up camp. I came across a bunch of other froggies, but I could not for the life of me figure out where to go to find what they wanted, or who they wanted me to deliver an item to??? As I said, there is no compass, no map, no quest markers and no quest log. The main character, along with the froggies, will continuously pop these speech balloons with just images that will "hint" to what and who. But without ANY type of guidance, this results in running around the map, getting lost, getting confused, coming across an item that you remember one of the frogs wanted, but not being able to check who that was and where they are, running in circles... It's a whole mess. As for the controls, only being able to carry one item at a time without an inventory does not make a game cozy. I don't mind if a game doesn't do much hand-holding when it comes to quests. I feel like cozy games could do with less hand-holding. But a quest log and a map would be the bare minimum?! The concept and art style could make for a truly cozy and relaxing experience. But this is a no for me. ):
I typically love a fetch questy platformy game with a good amount of achievements to unlock, but i finally gave up on this one. It was really annoying not having a map or a quest log of any kind, especially if i took a break between play sessions. It made a style of game i am very familiar with into something increasingly frustrating. I dont have to have an inventory, i dont have to have a map, and i dont have to have a questlog - but having *none* of these things made the game much more tedious and less enjoyable for me. It just led to a lot of unnecessary running around and doubling back, and the item symbols often did not have substantial visual distinction. The pink salt when requested just looked like a regular freaking rock — that was my breaking point, when i had to convince myself i was not having fun and just needed to put this game down and stop wasting my time. Props to art direction though, it is a cute game and i love the environments and character designs. The traversal/movement feels pretty good as well. I truly feel like a map alone could have saved my experience, especially one where i can mark landmarks/resources manually a la BOTW, almost as a minigame in itself. It was a choice to not have a map/quest log of any kind, it just was not a choice that worked for me personally.

I wanted to like it, I did. I like the prologue/demo which is basically the entire game but smaller. That works since you have a more limited space. This game wants you to grab an item and run all the way back and some items can break, some melt, some you drop when you fall and can be hard to find again. Also the day/night cycle is way too fast and everyone "goes inside" at night so you cant' do anything besides make camp and sleep.
Time on Frog Island - шикарная игра! В Time on Frog Island, конечно, есть свои минусы, но о них позже.
I wanted to like Time on Frog Island because of the art style, but it missed the vibe. The soft, cozy visuals and the game’s mechanics were easily the strongest parts for me. Exploring the island and interacting with the world felt charming at first, and the whole game has a very relaxed atmosphere that immediately pulled me in. Unfortunately, the gameplay itself is where things started to fall apart for me. A huge issue was figuring out what my next objective actually was and how I was supposed to accomplish it. Instead of feeling rewarding or clever, a lot of the progression just felt confusing and directionless. The world also ended up feeling strangely empty, which made it hard for me to stay invested. As cute as everything looked, I never really felt motivated to keep playing, and over time the experience became more disappointing than cozy. It’s honestly such a letdown because the presentation and concept are so lovable. I can absolutely see why people would be drawn to it, but for me the gameplay loop just didn’t live up to how charming the game looked on the surface.
After completing the short and sweet prologue chapter, I was wondering if the mechanics shown in it would translate well into the full, longer game, namely the imprecise jumping, fixed camera, and day-night cycle that forces you to get busy building a fire each night. Still, the demo was enticing enough for me to try the whole game. Well, no. Those mechanics do NOT work well in a game of this scope. The fire-building gets stale really quickly, the lack of direction (that some would probably call freedom to explore) leads to long fruitless backtracking sections, the wobbly jumping makes the platforming sections unnecessarily tedious, and there is a sequence of actions that locks your progress on one quest without ever explaining how you can reset it (leaving you to wonder if this is a bug, and it probably IS). These factors, unsurprisingly, make the fun and charm wear off long before you finish the playthrough. Play the free prologue instead.
It's been a while since I played this, but I wanted to throw my 2cents out for this one. I really disliked this game when I first tried it, like the other reviews, I was totally lost and instantly stressed trying to remember all the items and who wants what, exactly the opposite of what I was looking for when I launched the game. Then I came back a few months later, and knowing what to expect, I spent some time exploring the island, and did some deliveries one by one. Once you create your own personal compass of the world (it's really not that big), the game becomes a lot more enjoyable. It's really odd for a 'cozy' type game, almost like a metroidvania / speedrunning optimized game instead. I can see why others just put it down, but this one made it's way into my favorites list.. after some time.
