as a long-time punch out veteran i could barely sit by for this, i mean, the artstyles nice, but the sound cues are just not all there, and the voice acting for the game being very clearly ai-generated makes me just not rock with it, i would've rather had none at all.
Artstyle is good. I wasn't expecting Punch-Out, but the gameplay here is honestly horrible. Punch-Out, Fight Night this is not. It's like a kind of, hit the button and hope you hit. There's no real fighting "game". I'll fight you drunk and you'd be able to learn my punches. I mean... yeah. I want to love this game so much, but it's a no.

I was really excited to play Thunder Ray, but I quickly found myself wishing it used the NES Punch-Out!! viewpoint instead of something that is more like the arcade original. The animations are great, and the alien opponents give the game a lot of personality, but even with that strong style, it still feels a bit empty once you get into it. There aren’t many fights, the story is barely there, and the whole experience is over far too fast. That said, the actual boxing feels good. Landing punches is satisfying, the special moves look great, and the enemy designs are easily the most memorable part of the game. It’s fun for a quick playthrough and plays well enough, but it doesn’t quite live up to what it seemed to promise.
cool throw-back looking game with interesting premise but the controls are clunky-AF...i'm usually great at these games but because of the weird latency issues i'm facing with this game (and only this game) - its just nearly impossible to play...i've tried all kinds of controllers and different PCs so i know its the game. i wish i woulda played it sooner so i could've gotten my money back on it. it feels as if the controls were designed to be clunky as a way of implementing a false sense of difficulty. update: seems to be an issue with using controllers at all. game played much better with keyboard but that in itself defeats the purpose of an "arcade-style" beat-em-up meant to emulate the ARCADE games of the 80s-90s. with this knowledge, i'd wait for it to go on sale 60% or more.
... I sincerely hope this reaches the team behind Thunder Ray. I’m writing this as someone who has wanted a new entry in the Punch Out series since I was a kid. There’s clearly a lot of ambition here, and I truly believe the game has MASSIVE potential. However, in its current state, it falls far short of what it could be, and that’s incredibly frustrating to experience as a player. I came in excited, but ultimately, I walked away really disappointed. This feels like a project that would have benefited enormously from more playtesting and refinement before release. To start with some of the smaller issues: The voice acting raised some concerns for me. I don’t want to spread misinformation on the web, but from what I’ve heard, it sounds very much like AI-generated audio. If that’s the case, it’s honestly quite distracting, please get rid of it, I'd rather have no voice acting than have the TikTok TTS coaching me. Visually, the game can also be overwhelming in ways that don’t enhance gameplay at all. There are excessive flashing lights and photosensitive effects that feel unnecessary and, at times, make this game frustrating to stare at for long periods of time. Especially the effects when you're low on health, they don’t add tension in a meaningful way. Instead, they make it harder to focus and recover, which feels counterproductive. The gore is another aspect that didn’t land well for me. The Bloody explosions when you land the K.O punch feels out of place and overly edgy imo That said, my biggest concern is the gameplay itself. At its core, the game feels like an attempt to capture the spirit of Punch-Out, but it misses what made those games work so well. A key issue is the lack of clear attack telegraphing. The animations on the opponents often don’t communicate where or how to dodge effectively, which leads to frustration rather than a satisfying learning curve. This shows in the first fight of the game against Rico, his uppercuts and swings don’t clearly signal the correct response, considering he's the only humanoid adjacent character, this issue only gets worse and worse as you progress. Ironically, the animation work itself feels overengineered. Characters are flashy and dynamic, but that visual complexity comes at the cost of clarity. In a game like this, readability should ALWAYS come first. Dodging should feel intuitive, not like memorizing inconsistent or unclear animations. I would strongly urge you to study the sprite work of Super Punch-Out. What makes this more frustrating is that the game does show glimpses of what it could be. I was going to give up sooner than I did, but particularly against the Witch and Mr. Pega I legitimately had a good time fighting them, it felt much more fair and readable. Those encounters demonstrated that the game is capable of delivering engaging and well-designed fights.I just wish that level of clarity and balance was consistent throughout the entire experience. I’m sharing all of this not out of hate but as a consumer, because I know people like me are the target audience for your game, people who have played Punch Out since they were nine and now want something new over a decade later. I genuinely believe this game could be something great with a complete revamp. You guys have a good foundation, but this needs work.
¡Totalmente recomendado!
This game has an interesting concept, as the boxing boss rush is something new, but there are some flaws, which I'll mention. 1. The game is too short. It took me 2.5 hours to play, which is incredibly short for a game that costs $14. For this amount of content, the price is too high. 2. The combat system is quite unusual, especially for a boss rush, but it has two major problems. The first problem is the types of attacks our character uses. On paper, it looks cool because you can hit the stomach or the head, but this system doesn't really exist. You can hit the head or the body, but it has absolutely no effect. There is one boss who is only vulnerable to head attacks because he hovers over the main character. You can beat the game by spamming Y on the Xbox controller or triangle on the PS controller. The second combat problem is that the enemy attacks are terribly unclear and blend together when there are many of them. It's not a huge problem, but it is annoying. Often, you simply have to guess what the boss will do, which would make sense in, for example, Souls-like games, where bosses have predetermined combos, but in this game, the enemy attacks with random attacks in random sequences. The third problem with boss fights is their health. Bosses in this game have huge health bars (on Normal difficulty, I'm afraid of how it is on Hard), which makes boss fights tedious after a while. The quintessential characteristic of boss rush is that when you start fighting the boss, the fight seems incredibly long, but the better you play, the shorter it becomes. Five minutes per boss fight turns into two.
I hate this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game, I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ died because my friend dmed me at the last boss in rumble hardest diff, ♥♥♥♥ you caffty
