About
“A surreal journey into the afterlife. Can you survive the Thousand Hells?”
Four heroes risk their body and mind as they descend into the underworlds. Thousand Hells is a tactical narrative game where your choices determine your fate and change your party forever. Assemble a team that can handle the physical and mental trials of hell, or at least the demons, guardians, and gods in the one you’re visiting today.
In the underworlds, you and your team must fulfill your contract with the mysterious Ambassador, which changes with every mission. Planning helps, but no job ever goes according to plan...

Customize your character and build a party with unique skills and traits.
Dynamic Narrative Encounters: Choose the best option and use your party’s skills to advance with your body and mind intact.
Life or Death Choices: Multiple paths for every encounter. Take a risk for big payoffs or play it safe to keep your party healthy?
Highly Replayable: Create a new unique quest or retry failed missions. Your cast of helpers changes each time.
Experience Every Underworld: Whether you’re following in Orpheus’s footsteps to rescue a loved one or save the Eternal City from an insect plague, the underworld you visit and how you tackle its challenges will change the way the story plays out.
An anthology of mythic journeys imagined by 8 different writers, with hundreds of hand-painted illustrations.

Every heist needs a team but not all heroes get along! Before setting out you need to gather a party of skilled adventurers. Each hero has a profession and a unique set of skills. Make sure to choose a variety of skills and personalities so you’ll be ready no matter what comes crawling out...

The evil below has many weaknesses, your choices will affect your chances at surviving. Use the strengths of your party in over 280 unique dynamic narrative encounters. Skills will change depending on your team’s successes and failures. Avoid combat by sending your bard to calm the nerves of bandits. Hire a demonologist to communicate with a possessed book. Take the risk and reap the rewards, otherwise you’ll end up with a broken arm, or worse.

Thousand Hells is highly replayable, creating a new unique quest or letting you retry a failed mission. Your cast of helpers is different each time. One run takes about an hour, but automatic saving and a synopsis of the story so far lets you play when you only have a few minutes.

You reside in the Eternal City, a Byzantine-flavored fantasy world where untold demons lurk below your feet, with riches ready for the taking, if you dare. A client hires you for one last job, but you’ll need the right team to pull it off.
Thousand Hells takes place in a stand-alone fantasy world from the designers of King of Dragon Pass and the Six Ages series. This anthology narrative was pulled from the minds of 8 different writers such as Robin D. Laws and Aaron A. Reed and is supplemented by gorgeous hand-painted illustrations. Each hell is distinct, with its own palette and idiosyncratic threats to survive. No generative AI was used in the making of this game.

what if you played a blades in the dark oneshot with a particularly sadistic gm who'd just read the Realis rulebook upside down. love the blurry semantics of fumbling your way through high-stakes theivery/negotiation/poetry!! one for the real Interactive Fiction heads
Every time I've emerged from the underworld, it's been stumbling and barely, even if I succeed. The stories are intense and filled with struggles, which I've found really engaging. Maybe *next time* I can get through okay.... But probably not, and I like that.

Very fun game with fun ideas. Just know that this is a "fail forward" game and you won't be getting a perfect ending every time. Hopefully, after a failure or two, you'll see the beauty in it.
I really like procedurally generated narratives in games in the spirit of Wildermyth or Black Closet. I like that it's short and highly replayable. Some storylines are better than others but that's to be expected. The writing, especially dialogues, is a bit dry at times. But it is overshadowed by the setting and the stories. What's really missing is the ability to see your previously played stories. I think it would improve the game greatly.
The atmosphere of this game is exquisite. It really hits the sweet spot of "what if King of Dragon Pass were a Fighting Fantasy-esque CYOA?", which is a concept I had never considered, but actually rules. Losses can be extremely punishing and it is very easy to lose, but it's more about the journey than the destination, really. Just embrace the mood of it and you'll have a good time.
It's impressive how natural the events flow and character interactions feel based on your choices and their personality quirks. The art is great. I like how it handles 'skill checks', and how fail forward it feels. Bad outcomes feel just as natural as good ones. And runs are just the right length to get invested but not too down about losing. Really glad I jumped on this at launch
This is rad.
Really nicemade game. Feels a bit smaller than previous games from this studio, but nonetheless great work. Love it!
EDIT, Dev reply: Repetitive clicking is repetitive regardless of whether its done via a mouse click or a keyboard input or a controller input. --- Hesitant positive for now, but this game is not without technical issues. Framerate is oddly choppy during screens like game setup where it has no right to be, clicking to scroll text gets tedious fast (every statement needs a click), and for some reason there's a metaprogression system to unlock content bound to playing scenarios randomly, though there is a "pity" system to disable "random" being able to pick options you've already seen. There's also no music in the main menus or game setup for some reason. I'm probably going to like this overall for replay value, but I also suspect the random plot lines will get old fast, and I don't like that intentional choices lead to a "loss" when nothing actually went wrong during the run. For example, the party deciding it is immoral to finish a job and leaving while all are present and alive, is a lost run. But nothing here is particularly innovative in the ways that the developer's previous works tried to be, and yet they're charging the same price. How much post-launch support happens will make a big difference in determining whether I keep this as a positive review or not.
