Really want to be able to recommend this one, 's been many hours of good fun- but just can't in good faith thanks to its atrociously exploitive monetization. First of all, you have to pay for colors to make liveries with, and you get them at random, costing more than 45 USD to get as many as you can, & 's a little unclear if that even gets you everything available or not. Also, the amount of details you can have at once is limited by the amount of packs you have, and further still the material sliders are restricted the same way as well. Yeah, you have to pay multiple times to use the full extent of a menu slider, in this sandbox game that already costs 15 USD to begin with. And the liveries you make will look different for others you try to share them with if they don't have all the same random stuff unlocked. Early dev footage shows the game at one point just used a standard RGBA color picker, which incredibly painful to know was removed. (It's still in the game actually, used for the track editor; bit of a double standard isn't it?) Never seen a monetization scheme this bad in an indie game before- outside of mobile apps that is. All for supporting small devs with extra cosmetic addons, but this is just absurdly intrusive and ruins a feature that's essential to making the most out of this sort of sandbox game. Paywalling colors is already disgusting enough, but making players gamble on which ones they get to use- who thought this was even remotely a good idea?! Maybe something like a few themed prop packs for the track editor would've been an relatively inoffensive way to have gone about this, but no, they had to go and take away something that should've been a core part of the game, so we don't get to express ourselves without paying up. This and a bunch of other little frustrating restrictions add up to make the "unlimited" subtitle feel quite ironic- and to be honest, woefully pretentious. Will likely be spending many more hours on it anyways, but that's just for a lack of decent alternatives...
Highly customizable racing game. You can make your own tracks and cars, make them either arcadey, realistic or whatever you feel like. You can even make your own liveries for the cars, though you do need the Customization Packs to get the most out of the livery editor. You can do multiplayer either locally with split-screen and LAN, or online with leagues and events that you can organize on the game's Discord server. The community is very chill and helpful. In addition to racing, there are other modes, such as Sumo, Capture the Flag and Deathmatch. These bring some nice variety to the game. You can also save replays of events that you take part in and rewatch them from other driver's perspectives, as well as spectate them live. If you like racing games and high amounts of customization, check it out!
Good concept but poor game performance, ugly menu and UI. Feels like an unfinished game. At £12.79 it's very overpriced. It's worth £5 at best.
It's hard to know where to start with this game! It's a superb arcade racing sandbox which offers almost unlimited possibilities for talented creators. I played the original Turbosliders for nearly two decades, so I am certainly predisposed to loving this game, and I understand well what solo developer Antti Mannisto is trying to achieve with this project. It's a true labour of love, a tribute to 2D racing games of old, but even more than his first game, it also goes a step beyond those previous titles and brings the format a proper modern twist. Whilst it is a game that is primarily built for casual arcade racing similar to slicks 'n' slide or micro machines, and that is what a lot of the marketing for the game revolves around, the customisability of the game means you'll always be finding or inventing something new and different. The track and car editors allow the small but dedicated community to play all sorts of different game types - sim type racing, a ridiculously fun battle mode, tag, hide and seek, and returning from the old game are sumo (xbumpz) and football (punaball). Playing this game never feels stale, as you can always switch to doing something completely different. To get the most out of this game and enjoy those modes, you really have to take part in that community on the discord. Sadly the game doesn't yet have an active casual racing playerbase who consistently play fun, non-serious racing every evening as the old game had, but the potential is certainly there, and the organised cups and sessions have provided me with some fantastic fun. Joining at least one of the weekly Sunday cups is an absolute must to see the sort of variety the game has to offer. The games greatest strength then is its variety. The campaigns offer a single player mode that is fun and rewarding to come back to as your skills improve, and I find the difficulty is nicely balanced. Do be warned though, its not something you'll be able to excel at and get top scores at on your first day playing the game. Instead, it's something you can come back to again and again, and marvel at how much you have improved since the days you struggled to achieve one star! Missile modes especially are glorious chaos, with cars flying in all directions. But the built in campaign is only the start - head to the workshop and install some of the player made campaigns and you'll be finding something new every time you play. My absolute favourite thing to do in this game however, is hotlapping. The old game was already extremely addictive to hotlap in, but the addition of global leaderboards and being able to play against the ghosts of other drivers (at least with the default cars) on at least 1,500+ user made tracks means this game can provide as many challenging times to beat as you can play. It's extremely addictive trying to eke out every tenth, then every hundreth of a second of time out of every corner. Fans of the original game or slicks 'n' slide should love how the default cars are essentially a 3D version of some of the old classics - Grippy and Antislider especially feel like the same car (albeit a little larger in the new version), and Sporty and Drifty bring back the Easyslider and Slider mechanics respectively. It's honestly completely delightful that almost 20 years on, Ande has made all of our idle daydreams about what Turbosliders would feel like in 3D come true. If you prefer to play with others, as already mentioned the Sunday sessions are essential to experience - plenty of insane arcade chaos, where the new works of track and car makers that week is often featured. If you want to play something a bit more "serious", there are organised leagues based around Formula 1 and a sort of Euro-NASCAR hybrid, as well as weekly sets of three short races with GT cars. There are also lots of one off cups throughout the year with varying unique and interesting aspects to them. It is also my experience that if you just want to play some multiplayer with others of an evening, if you host a server and ping the discord, you'll almost always find a decent handful of players to have a session with. I will also add that one big upgrade over the previous game is how it handles ping differences and lag - this often rendered the old game basically unplayable if the server was not super fast or if you were too far away. This new game handles that so brilliantly that I have found myself playing with guys from the other side of the world in New Zealand with almost no detriment to my enjoyment. To quickly address some of the chief concerns I see in other reviews: The paid DLC is not an issue whatsoever. There is no pay to win type mechanic, you can paint your car the same way as the old game (with a few colours and stripes) without buying any customisation packs. They are purely a way for players who have got a lot of fun out of the game to support the dev. I think the only real downside of them is that some people see that on the store page and might misconstrue the type of game this is. Another issue I see is with performance, and it did take some tweaking but I play this game on a small, underpowered laptop with the settings turned way down and can still enjoy myself and compete. There are actually some limits on track "complexity" (i.e. the amount of objects you can put in a custom track) which as I understand it are there with performance in mind. The other issue I have read about is with the complex UI - this is true, and does take a bit of getting used to. I still am yet to take the time to properly understand the track editor myself (and btw, I didn't even speak in my review about the plethora of options for players who want to create - needless to say its huge, and getting updated all the time. Just recently teleporters were added!). But the issue is mostly a story of the game suffering from its own success - with the huge amount of features and settings, it's a tough balancing act between hiding stuff away for simplicities sake and putting everything on display but overwhelming new players. The game is super easy to just pick up and play for newbies, and as time goes on you'll definitely appreciate having all those options available to you to enhance your enjoyment further. Tl;dr: Give this game a chance, there is something for everyone. Try the single player campaigns, the Sunday cups and hotlapping some custom tracks and go from there!
TLDR; Well worth the price, low skill floor and high skill ceiling, Amazing track editor, horrible car editor. (Dev please read the PS. at the bottom) I'm gonna be honest, I almost only use this game for the Level Creator, because I like to test track designs I come up with and really don't have the attention span to learn blender. But I use this one specifically for a few reasons. 1. It's honestly on the more simple end of 3D Track creators. The terrain tools can be a bit strange and temperamental, and the object catalogue isn't massive but I think there's plans to add more (surely), but the actual race surface can be incredibly diverse and I've seen some stunning creations on here that I don't even know how people can do that. 2. You can set up AI on your custom tracks, something that most track creators (that I've seen) doesn't support. It's no world class leader in AI racers but it can get the job done, and you can set up a lobby to only race the AI (as I tend to do yes I'm weird don't judge me) 3. You can create your own series, like by customising AI cars and driver abilities. It's slightly limited in that you can't select what AI are on what team, but I suppose you can just design the cars in teams and keep a team score sheet seperate from the game. 4. While the basic cars are very arcade-y, you can create decently realistic cars. Crash and contact physics are basic at heart but can be interesting to mess around with the nuances of. A few things I wanna mention, take it as feedback for the Dev/s or a warning to players 1. The car customisation couldn't be a worse system. You can customise cars immediately after you buy the game. BUT! You get 16 colours and a small handful of random logos and symbols and lines. On top of that, you can only 'save' a car if you've used 2 or less paint operations (applying a symbol or otherwise to the car). You can expand this buy buying customisation packs with more symbols and colours and +2 paint operations per pack. This all makes sense tbf, the Dev can make a little bit more money off the game cause its that cheap, and its not a feature that will largely affect your gameplay. What isn't fair are the packs. when you buy a customisation pack, you get a RANDOM set of symbols, which CAN include numbers or letters (things that seem important for a race car), but not all of them. It becomes gambling, where the only way to be sure you have all the numbers and letters is by BUYING ALL THE PACKS. and doing that costs about the same as just buying a whole other game. As a note to the Dev, I understand that sorta makes sense for most of the random decals, but maybe a 'Numbers' pack at some point would be nice. Or maybe I'm dumb and couldn't see it lol, let me know if I have missed a major part of this. ^^Wow I'm sorry that feedback looks way out of proportion its not actually a massive deal, just something I found a touch annoying and needed a lot of words to explain it. 2. Currently as I'm writing this, the AI are in a test for knowing how to Pit, which will be crazy awesome once its up and fully released but as it is, it can be temperamental. Not really a note for the Dev just saying that's not fully ready yet. 3. No in built weather system, but you can adjust your tracks in the editor to make the surface more slippery and have wet weather physics. Overall, love this game for the fact that it lets me force silly little AI to complete my silly little circuits and battle for my silly little entertainment. Love this work, can't wait to see what comes in the future. PS to the dev. please can you add the fences that are on like every pit wall ever, with the curve over the top, to the editor. I see the files are in the game, the object is there on the menu screen, just put it in the obstacles object folder in the editor please please please it would make like all of my tracks better please
$15 for a frankly very limited and simple racing game and then you put any reasonable amount of car customization behind a DLC paywall? Absolutely not gonna support that. Is it fun? Yeah, it's fine but I'm not supporting a dev who tries to scalp you for every dime you're worth
Now, I could list off all the things I didn't like about this game, but I won't. Instead I will say this: I have the "Complete a race challenges event" achievement that I get for finishing a race. Only 18.2% of people have this. Let that really sink in before you decide to buy.
I initally wrote a very critical review of this game, and sure, the game could be better in places and sometimes it can be a frustrating. But there's still fun to be had here, tons of variety and a cool and dedicated community to be found, which is commendable since the game is almost entirely made by one person. With all that in mind I can't not recommend it. Give it a shot if the game's premise peaks your interest in any way or if you enjoyed games like it in the past.
challenging AI, small but welcoming community, fun physics and a lot of customization options. Great game to challenge your friends for a very friendly price
