Perhaps the highest praise that I can give The Wanderer is that it is not a game that adapts Mary Shelley's masterpiece one to one, but rather a game that stays true to much of the spirit and tone of her work while also being transformative in a new and interesting way, suited to the strengths of video games as an interactive form of storytelling. Frankenstein is one of the most maligned and poorly represented works of literature in modern history, relegated to a position of cheap monster horror in our pop culture understanding of it. The Wanderer, thankfully, has none of these misrepresentations and rather takes an elegant approach to adapting Frankenstein for a game with moral choice. Shelley's work is not horror at all, but rather introspective tragedy - a story meant more to be an examination of the consequences of science and the meaning of being human more than it is intended to thrill. And this game delivers on those fronts. Both aesthetically and philosophically, I have a feeling Shelley would have appreciated much of what The Wanderer has to offer. Of course, introducing choices to what is originally a linear story does have some potential hiccups, and while the ending that I personally received was satisfactory, it was in no way something that I would ever have expected Shelley herself to write. Again, this is not a one to one retelling, and La Belle has taken some of their own spins here, but none of that is necessarily problematic as it still explores the themes of the original work in a way that is meaningful rather than revisionist. There are some design flaws that impede this from being a truly great game; odd bugs like being able to pick up items that aren't there or being able to see off the map; poorly designed (but beautifully drawn) maps that make it difficult to navigate; and some wonkiness with the point-and-click controls. In a few places The Wanderer is also too worried about giving you something mechanically to do, even if that comes at the expense of immersing you in the story. In a longer game, these things would be more of an issue, but for what it is, The Wanderer is a wonderfully solid little title. The beautiful handpainted backgrounds, an excellent soundtrack, and writing that emulates the tone of 19th century books surprisingly well helps bring an already proven story to life in a unique way. There are not a lot of literary games - but games like this make me wonder if perhaps there shouldn't be more. The Wanderer is not a cheap cash grab but rather an artful take on Shelley's work - even if it suffers from some amateurish flaws. It's not perfect, but it feels edifying and enriching to play - something that can be said about too few games.
This or the recent movie, both good, beautiful and descriptive of the original story. The game is not really a game, not really much to do besides advancing the story, but worth trying. Get your facts together about Frankenstein.
A sometimes awkward, but touching take on a well-known work, even with new ideas worthy of being part of this story.
Looks nice, good music, however I didn't find the janky gameplay or puzzles interesting.
Creature.
